For everyone saying Dolores didn't do much to help the situation or that she was flirty- I don't think y'all realize how easy it is to manipulate children. As a product of sexual abuse at a young age I can confirm that you think it's a game and you're just a flirty person. You lean into it even if you don't like it

The whole Lolita express thing with Jeffery Epstein’s island is what she is talking about I think! Damn she’s clearly a witch then! She has admitted it but she’s not talking about stones and dream catchers or sage smudging here. I mean a genuine Crowley -esque type of witch... The people in these comments are much smarter than I thought. I appreciate their intelligent remarks and reflections on the subject matter of this song. I was scared to listen to this song because I assumed it would be problematic but I am happy to see that people understand the context of the song and book it's name is based on.
@bighead2437

sadly, I wish people knew the difference between the song being based on the book and simply making a reference. This is not a song about delores and “humbert” (or whatever that creeps real name is) its a song about lana and her habit of dating older men. “Let them all say hey lolita hey, hey lolita hey” is a dead give away that she is saying that people called her a lolita rather than this being lolitas perspective. Like when someone says “im so ocd” and they dont have ocd, she is being called lolita but probably isnt in a severe relationship with a whack job pedophile. Which I actually agree with calling younger women who like older men lolita more than saying you’re “ocd” because definitionally it makes more sense. Delores in the book was the real “lolita” while lolita is a flirtatious “vixen” (gross) that flirted into the heart of humbert. Meaning that it actually makes sense to call a flirtacious young woman a lolita for dating older men, if they called them lo, or lola, or delores then that would actually be refering to that actual person that was delores, while “lolita” references a persona that was fathemed in the mind of a pedophile. it wasnt delores it was a lie that a pedophile told himself to justify his actions. Thus when young women play into their fetishization they act as that lie that humbert created in his mind. Of course I am less ok with calling an underage girl that because that implies that they are responsible for their sexualization and should be with old men because they “want” it. Lolita was a girl that could choose to want to be with an old man and that simply doesnt exist when a childs brain is not developed enough to truly know what they want.
@comicconcarne
@comicconcarne 5 жыл бұрын
"You know Lolita is about pedophilia right?" Yes, and that's why I like this song. Because under the baby voice singing about how much she wants it there's this dark orchestral tone. The whole bridge sounds like she's trying to convince herself. The spelling of "love" has a demonic distortion. And I just remember how I blamed myself for being molested because I thought I was mature enough and should know better and know that it was wrong and do something to stop it. I listen to this whenever those thoughts creep back so they can have some structure, so that those thoughts can be external, because it's easier to see that someone else is in danger than it is to see yourself.

The world is a dangerous place for young innocent and vulnerable girls. If you are reading this, it means that you are stronger than you think you are for you are still living although you are carrying such an awful burden. I have experienced the same thing and I gotta admit it had gave me a couple mental disorders as I grew older (anxiety, personality disorder, depression, etc.). But as I grew up, I learned to control and embraced the sexual assault my eight year old self have had faced. I gave into acceptance and that bad things, including the worst, will ALWAYS happen to us humans. But I'm not trying to explain more of how I decided not to slit my throat up three years later after the assault because I thought about my family and my future family... I'm just trying to say, you are not alone. I don't know who you are but your past is not your present, neither is it your future. Your past might be bad, but don't make your future bad as well. You can change everything and improve anything! All you have to do is don't give a fuck about the past, minor life problems, and find a better way to be the best of you for the time will come when the person who did you wrong WILL face their consequences.

@comicconcarne

@@kayliejmoore3996 I think the book defined nymphets as 8-12 year old girls who are curious to be with older men. Because you're not supposed to agree with the narrator. Any modern definition about adult seductresses acting sweet and innocent just uses the word as allusion to the book because it's a well known piece of literature.

TheyCallMeKat it wasn’t originally a love story. At all. It was a book about sexual abuse and pedophilia from the perspective of a delusional man, since back in the day that wasn’t really seen as a big issue and wasn’t talked about as much. The author made it as a warning to parents to watch out for their children. Even from Humbert Humbert’s perspective it was clearly NOT a love story as he wanted to portray it as.

The song is awesome, tho it scares me how many people think "Lolita" is a freaking love story. Dolores was not toying with Humbert and flirting with him. Keep in mind both the book and the movie are from Humbert's perspective. If you watch closely (not even that much tbh) you can clearly see the abuse and Dolores trying to escape. It is not a love story, it's what a sick person made up in his mind to try and justify sexually, psychologically and verbally abusing a little girl. And y'all know what the worst part is? Someone's actually falling for it.

I read this book and did my trimester project on it. Let me tell, you the author was a genius . The purpose of the book is to keep people on their toes about child predators. If people had questioned Humbert Humbert a little more maybe Dolly would have never become his Lolita .

@v4lue definitely not. Humbert is imagining it all in his head. Lo tried to escape multiple times but we can't really see it since the movie is from his perspective. There is a scene where I remember Lo started stealing his money n hiding it to run away? When he found out I remember she slapped him n started crying. She definitely didn't want to be w him or convince herself that he's good bc if so then she wouldn't have gotten married to another guy.

I would just like to remind everyone that the book Lolita wasn’t meant to sexualize children but instead it’s a story that was made for all the Dolores’s out there who got taken advantage of by an older individual who should have known better. It is totally normal for teens and children to explore their sexuality and be attracted to someone that’s older because they don’t know any better. The author admitted that he was sexually abused as a child and that this book was by no means a love story. This book was for other people like Dolores to look at and understand that they are not alone.

The lyrics are sweet and romantic but the music is like some serial killer is dancing in the background and about to show us their secrets. Edit: To the people in the replies saying I need to re-evaluate my whole life for calling the lyrics sweet and romantic: 1. I discovered lolita only AFTER listening to this song, so, I didn't know it was about a pedo. I was studying while listening to LDR songs in a queue. The feel of this song felt particularly sinister so I made this comment and then moved on. 2. Despite not knowing at that time, I still felt that the girl singing is falling for a bad guy (hence, the "serial killer" comment) 3. Please, do not jump to conclusions about me, if possible. Of course, it's the internet and everyone has their freedom of speech, so, I have no right to complain. I just wanted to clarify. Have a nice day and stay safe.

I can see where you are coming from. She may enjoy the book for the story behind it, after all, I did enjoy the movie because it was emotional. It is something that is real and unfortunately happens a lot, and someone may have wanted it to come to others attention about a situation like this. I think the song was not really romanticizing it, but telling the story in a playful point of view of the girl - Dolores. At the beginning of the movie, she was playful around Humbert, a very hyperactive and fun girl. So I guess that's why the song is so happy/romantic sounding. Because Dolores, in the beginning, thought of their relationship as innocent (Before she was raped T.T)

Just like most of her song Lana is always Singing the part of the person on the receiving end, she's always giving depth to the character, but they're always caught in a mess, and people misinterpret it as glorification/romantization, but she's singing as a Real person would think/ not someone who know the relationship is toxic, (that's valid for all of her songs but even more obvious in this one because of the use of childish language even tho Lana we all know as a way with beautiful words and sorrowful words) but this song illustrates perfectly what Lana does. And in it's own way she bring light to the feeling of some who actually felt that way and now are able to understand they weren't in the right place because they knew others could feel like it

I see this as a representation of feeling that young girls have. many girls about 12-16 feel the need to be older or look older or act older. To stop feeling like a dumb child. When I was like 12, I had other 12-year-old friends that would brag about dating older boys, drinking, smoking, etc. They were lying about most of it, but they said it to seem more mature. Because teenage girls have a warped sense of what maturity is. In this song it is a girl trying to convince herself that she wants to be in a relationship with a grown man. "Do it my way" is a clear representation of her thinking it's on her own terms. And " no more skipping rope skipping heartbeats with the boys downtown" is about her feeling that boys her age are not mature enough. This is the mindset that groomers create. They want the girl to feel like she has the power even though she's being manipulated and assaulted. This mindset is created not only by groomers but by society. Many young girls who are coming into their sexuality are at risk for this mindset. Society has convinced young girls that to be sexy you have to be this "Lolita".

Since the instrumental sounds sinister, I don't think Lana Del Rey AKA Lizzy Grant is glorifying it. She did the same thing in "Put Me In A Movie", where the instrumental sounded happy, but her vocals sounded miserable. Lizzy knows exactly what she's doing. She's so creative when she makes dark songs, & that's why I love her.

Mrs. Greene I don’t believe I said any different? I simply quoted something. 👀 the entire book is from his point of view, you’re meant to fall in love with the story as he makes it seem like a love story and like she was consenting when in truth she probably didn’t think twice about anything she did. That’s what the writer wants you to realise, he’s awful and sick.

dude my best friend listens to lana and when i reccomended her this song she said that i support pedophilia and i'm disgusting.. WHAT 💀 this song is the literal retelling of the book lolita from dolores pov, that's NOT supposed to be romanticised since the beggining, even the author spoke about how this isn't a romantic book. I see it rather psychological because it almost manipulates you to sympathise with the predator, it's one of a kind book meant to twist your morals and mind.

"Lolita isn't a love story", thank you, we didn't realize before, omg, you should get a prize for revealing something that no one ever knew, for revealing such a secret that not even the FBI would have revealed. The song and the book are amazing, because they're written beautifully and that's what art and literature is; it isn't about what you write, it's about how you write it. IT's a awful story? YES, WE KNOW THAT. There are so many terrible stories in this world, whether they have a book or not, IT'S A WELL WRITTEN BOOK? YES. And that's the whole point of the book; it's well written, written by a true master, an incredible writer, and that's it. That's the whole point of Lolita.
@moth8921

Am I the only one who doesn't think this song is literally about Dolores Haze? I've always seen it as a teen girl (possibly a sex worker) who falls in love/infatuation with an older guy. She sings "let them all say 'hey Lolita, hey'" because everyone around her is comparing her to the pop culture image of a Lolita-like girl: a young, precocious girl who seduces older men. There are also inconsistencies with the story being described and Dolores's situation in the book: with Dolores, nobody knew about what Humbert was doing to her. The narrator of this song is open and joyous about her new relationship. Everyone around her is like "oooh girl yikes", but she responds that she doesn't care if she's being like a "Lolita", she knows what she's doing and is in love. That being said, it's still a dark song about a girl getting into an unhealthy relationship that she doesn't have the experience to navigate.

Would you be mine, would you be my baby tonight? Could be kissing my fruit punch lips in the bright sunshine 'Cause I like you quite a lot, everything you got, don't you know? It's you that I adore, though I make the boys fall like dominoes Kiss me in the D-A-R-K dark tonight D-a-r-k do it my way Kiss me in the P-A-R-K park tonight P-a-r-k let them all say Hey Lolita, hey Hey Lolita, hey I know what the boys want, I'm not gonna play Hey Lolita, hey Hey Lolita, hey Whistle all you want but I'm not gonna say No more skipping rope, skipping heart beats with the boys downtown Just you and me feeling the heat even when the sun goes down I could be yours, I could be your baby tonight Topple you down from your sky forty stories high Shining like a God, can't believe I caught you and so Look at what I bought, not a second thought, oh, Romeo Kiss me in the D-A-R-K dark tonight D-a-r-k do it my way Kiss me in the P-A-R-K park tonight P-a-r-k let them all say Hey Lolita, hey Hey Lolita, hey I know what the boys want, I'm not gonna play Hey Lolita, hey Hey Lolita, hey Whistle all you want but I'm not gonna say No more skipping rope, skipping heart beats with the boys downtown Just you and me feeling the heat even when the sun goes down I want my cake and I want to eat it too I want to have fun and be in love with you I know that I'm a mess with my long hair And my suntan, short dress, bare feet I don't care what they say about me, what they say about me Because I know that it's L-O-V-E You make me happy, you make me happy And I never listen to anyone Let them all say Hey Lolita, hey Hey Lolita, hey I know what the boys want, I'm not gonna play Hey Lolita, hey Hey Lolita, hey Whistle all you want but I'm not gonna say No more skipping rope, skipping heart beats with the boys downtown Just you and me feeling the heat even when the sun goes down

I just found out that people think that Dolores was actually flirting with him and loved him, for fuck sake she was 14. The only thing I loved when I was 14 were my toys she did not flirt with him and that is not a romantic story

lolita is a beautifully written book told from the perspective of a pedophile. the book has an anti-pedophile message, but the pov character plays with language to try to make himself likable and sympathetic. it’s no cute love story, nor is it about a devious little girl taking advantage of this poor old man whose name is literally a combination of humble and pervert.

if you don’t know what this song is about, it’s based on the book “Lolita” by Nabokov, in which a man in his thirsties falls in love with his step daughter whom is 13. I recommend it in terms of the writing, it’s beautifully written but I got easily grossed out when thinking about the whole context.

The word boys was used in the song. This one's talking about more than one person. There's no one special.

People in the comments are taking this much too seriously. There’s no need for a gigantic social justice debate or a lecture about the book. We all know what the song references. But can’t we just enjoy Lana’s art without the grandstanding and the moralising?

Yeah, people seem to get up and arms about these kinds of things but don’t feel the need to morally lecture about songs that include murder; it’s very strange, really.

I love this song a lot, but the film is really messed up. I decided to watch it, because I was interested and I didn't know what everyone was talking about until now. The story is horrible, and was most likely traumatising for lo. Also I read up that apparently the hule thing was from humberts side of view. Meaning that he thought she actually loved him, wen she was actually a victim. Who really knows what her side of view was. I saw like one comment saying its her fault for flirting and that this hule story and film is a love story. It really is not! And she was just young and silly, what do you expect. She was a victim and was taken advantage of as well. She had no were else to go other than staying with her "step dad" he wasn't even a father figure to her, he was a monster. And the fact that he stayed with Lolita's mum to get closure to Lolita, is plain messed up. Her mum sounded quite insecure in the story as wen she found out about him making fun of her and giving her sleeping pills, it was like she was more worried about what humbert thought of her, than what he thought of Lolita? It has great acting in the film, and great actors. But the story is well...............

I finished read Lolita two days ago.I want to say that Lolita is NOT a love story,the book talks about pedophilia and Dolores wasn’t flirting with H.H,she was scared and she was just a kid and the story is only about Humbert Humbert’s point of view.I like the way the book was writing,the author is really good at writing,but a lot of things that H.H was saying were really disgusting . You shouldn’t feel that way towards your daughter,she was just really little and she went trough a lot and she didn’t know what to do,but think about it,before saying that Lolita was a love story and that she was in love with him,because she wasn’t.

I know this song is slightly problematic, but for me it brings feelings of nostalgia. This is when Lana first came out and I fell in love with her. I was just a freshman in college when Born To Die came out. It was the anthem to my freshman year! Good times.
