Listen to the incredible sound of the Avro Lancaster with it's four Merlin engines as it starts up, takes off and lands at RAF Coningsby, home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Also featured is a Supermarine Spitfire.
The planes of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight have been preserved since World War II. The Lancaster, known as 'Leader' and registered as PA474, was built just after victory had been declared in Europe in 1945 and never actually saw action before deployment. The Spitfire, AB910, on the other-hand saw multiple battles and shot down a Dornier Do 217 in 1942.
The planes are intended to pay tribute to the fallen and preserve the history of the conflict for future generations to learn from. They belong to the Royal Air Force. Read more: www.raf.mod.uk/display-teams/...

Absolutely. The Lancaster remains in service with the Royal Air Force's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and therefore has a home and a lot of love at an active and very busy RAF base.

My Uncle Billy from Oregon flew these for the RAF at the age of 19/20 yrs. He was one nice man and a big influence on me growing up. He passed away at age 71 after retiring to Mexico. Miss you Billy, you were a real man.

There is not sound like four RR Merlin engines. It is the sound of British pride. Not many alive today will have experienced the sound of 20 Lancs taking off one after another, but those that did must have been awestruck. And to think many of the crews were in thier early 20's. Love and respect to them all. 🙏

My uncle was a pilot who went down in a Lancaster above France in the summer of 1944. He was 21. The other crew members bailed out and returned to England in various ways. I remember seeing him once when I was 3. I'm 83 now. How sad.

My Uncle was on the front lines in WW2, my Dad, who is about 13 years younger and a big plane freak, wanted to go the a Lancaster a couple years ago when there was one in towm, so he asked his brother if he wanted to go with him, he said "No, I saw enough Lancasters in the war and I really don't want to see one again." Fair statement from a veteran, personally, though I was in awe of this beast.
@CobraEmergency

I can understand that! Some veterans get nostalgic, others don't want anything to do with them, and I can see why. Not a nice time! At least future generations can learn from seeing these old machines. I certainly find them awe-inspiring.

My mum worked at Avro, Yeadon building the Lancaster. She would rivet the outer skins on to the fuselage. Her partner, Nelly was on the inside of the plane holding a 'dolly' and checking that the rivet had gone in properly and if it was wrong she would knock it back out. They worked high up on scaffolding. Mum said it was the best job she ever had and the money was good. The hangers where they were built had a flat roof which was painted green to look like a field from the air and they made paper mache cows and moved them around every so often in case the Germans flew over.

I was lucky enough to have a day out in lincolnshire and visited Just Jane a Lancaster at the local museum and had a taxi run and the opportunity to sit in the cockpit and the rear gun position. I had to clamber over the internal superstructure to gain access to rear bubble and then shoehorn myself into the seat and close the blast doors behind me. An emotional moment for me and one I will never forget. The ever so brave crews what they gave to protect us. I could only imagine combat conditions freezing cold, deafening noise, vibrations, and the fact your parachute was the other side of the doors in an emergency. So so brave god bless all who gave everything for us.

Wow! ❤🇬🇧 I have always loved the Spitfire and the Lancaster!! Both amazing and beautiful machines that have endured the many years since WW2!! I almost forgot how huge the Avro Lancaster is!! I try to imagine seeing hundreds of them up in the sky heading out towards a bombing mission and trying to think what those brave and courageous young men were thinking about... I know that the RAF bombed strictly at night...because of the huge losses from daylight bombing.. But I also know that nighttime bombing wasn't as good as daylight... Both times were tough and losses were high and in my opinion unacceptable.. I know that the Allies had to win the Air War.. it was something that had to be done! But I always stop and think about what those young men who died during the bombing raids...daylight or nighttime would have done with their lives? What would they have came up with to help humanity or the world?? Sadly we will never ever know!!!

@tim2015
@tim2015 3 ай бұрын
@ardell9267 I think the drag would not be great - certainly much less than the other two wheels and their legs. Other reasons? The size and weight of a retracting mechanism, which in this aircraft would probably occupy some of the tail gun turret's space. Materials: the mechanism and it's control cables, etc would use materials, workshop equipment and skilled craftsmen's time which were needed to produce essential parts for aircraft, army vehicles, naval vessels, also weapons and munitions. I learned a little from my Dad, who was ground crew in a Lancaster squadron, and a brother who is a retired avionics designer.
