Does this surprise you? Make you want the burrs? Do you appreciate my holding off on the review?
Also, please know this won't affect future burr reviews. I have no monetary gain from these selling and no pride. I still prefer SSP MP. This wasn't an attempt at MY ideal burr, but at AN ideal burr at the price point.

IMPORTANT TLDR: I have no bias towards this grinder or these burrs. I prefer the timemore sculptor 078 to these. I prefer ssp MP to these. I prefer ZP6 to these. I prefer the new Pietro Pro Brewing to these. I was simply wanting to help make an accessible burr set that was solid. Will they blow your mind? Probably not. Should you buy them? Maybe if you're using stock burrs and want a cheap upgrade. Anyway, this is the first and last time you'll hear me discuss these burrs so there won't be any issue going forward. Let's be real- I am not compensated so no incentive ha! Just happy to have contributed to something many seem to enjoy. Was excited to share that. Let me know your thoughts below! Oh, and like and subscribe!

Did you notice a lot of fines? I’m at the coarest setting and I’m still getting so much fines. 40 grams in and about 2 grams of 250um and smaller.
@Andrew-wp1bz
@Andrew-wp1bz Жыл бұрын
Michael Chong, that really isn’t a lot of fines. A pretty normal amount. You’ll always get some fines. You probably could align your burrs to produce less fines though.

Thank you Lance! I think you helped everyone in Specialty coffee by raising the bar for the burrs that became the "Gen 2" burrs! ZP6 vs Pietro Pro Brewing for a travel grinder?
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
That's next to nothing. Plus sifting is not a helpful measurement but let's assume it is. I sifted for my US brewers cup routine which placed second in my testing. A 15g dose of coffee on an ek43 gave me 2.2g of fines.

Travel? Zp6. Easier to hold and lighter. Better particle distribution? Pietro with the burrs I helped create lol. I am heavily biased here because I make royalties on Pietro sales BUT to be honest, it is big and heavy (1.5kg). Zp6 is lighter for travel. I prefer brews from Pietro and so have the 4 people I have blind brewed for.

Two quick things 1.) the hopper lid sits well when it’s made properly. The first one I got was warped so it never sat flat and always wobbled. Their EXCELLENT customer service replaced it and I’m happy with it now. 2.) adding your face to the stories I’ve heard about the process of selecting #23 makes so much sense.

First, thanks for all your shared sage knowledge. Watching your videos and the info that can't seem to bubble out fast enough, brings to mind the talking style of Marc Andreessen. (That's a huge compliment, he's almost otherworldly in his range and depth about everything.) My old Breville grinder died today and I binged reviews and videos. I only needed something simple for my French press, my espresso setup is in good health, so ordered this grinder today. Doesn't seem perfect but hope it will suffice without spending a larger chunk of change. Your stamp of approval made it a go. Thanks again.

For my 2 cents (worth likely less than that), I think these are exactly what they should be. My daily driver is a Lagom P100 with the stock SSP HU 98s; it was my preference overall for the kind of coffee I like to prepare, as blind tested against a friend's Weber and another friends Kafatek. Finding an electric brew grinder in that mid 300s price range that I could feel really good about recommending to friends and family who are not nearly as obsessed with coffee (i.e. not even entertaining the idea of dropping anything north of $400 on a grinder) was a lot harder before this came out. I got one right after they came out as a present for my brother in law, and had a chance to do a triangle test against my P100 for shiggles. Yes of course the P100 won every time. It was not night and day. The burrs in this really do produce an objectively enjoyable cup of coffee, and I think that's a real achievement at the price point. TL;DR, nicely done.

I posted my first comment before I finished the video, but thank you so much for waiting and for the transparency with your involvement on the bur development. I bought this grinder right when it came out because of other reviews, and knowing that you helped develop the burs just makes it feel even more special. I've really enjoyed this grinder, it's my first grinder and it's the one that got me into specialty coffee and I've been having a great time discovering light roast with it. As for the price, I think too much is being made of it, honestly. I think $50 is more than fair for the upgrade, especially considering inflation in the USA has caused, on average, increased consumer prices by 16%. 16% on $299 is $348, so it's basically a free upgrade if you buy it now, compared with the 2020 price of the Ode gen1
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
that's fair! In my mind, it is a 20% increase. If you look at it like it, it seems quite a bit more for a scaling company that is probably thrice the size they were. The margin has to be nuts on these in comparison to gen 1. But I get it!
@0whitestone
@0whitestone Жыл бұрын
@@LanceHedrick well, I don't really know about how big the company was compared to now, I thought my grinder three months ago so the fellow I know now is the fellow I've always known lol. One thing is interesting, they have a mix of premium price products ($100 French press), and now very low price with the Opus, and I think of the Ode as in between the two. They definitely have a wide ranging portfolio, for sure!
@10jsfvideo44
@10jsfvideo44 Жыл бұрын
The Gen. 2 price is justified due to the significant improvements from Gen1. You and other reviewers all agree that the improved burrs, low retention and static, more efficient hopper and SSP compatibility create a much improved taste in the cup and user experience.

I switched from the Encore and now that the burrs saw some action and I'm getting closer to my personal sweet point grindsizewise I'm really really happy I bought this! I'm so full of joy with most of my cups currently and i'm still improving with this grinder... Also I wanna try the SSP MP burrs after I get some experience with the gen 2 burrs, they're already waiting to be installed... but currently I enjoy the coffee of the gen 2 burrs very much, so they'll have to wait a bit longer... And now your video totally backed that with your experience, so thank you for that as well! :)

When I used my Gen 1, I would set the grind setting as low as 3 for the lighter roasts and still managing to get a 3 to 3.5 minute extraction in the Stag XF pour over set. I had to turn the grind setting all the way down to 1 if using the V60 in order to get a a great extraction. Now, with the Gen 2 with the upgraded SSP MP burrs I can get the same or similar extraction using the Stag XF but turned all the way up to the largest grind setting. This naturally opens up a huge array of possibilities for extractions with lighter roasts in the finer grind settings with the V60! I’ve been enjoying a ton of experimenting with different extractions, recipes and so on. The anti static feature is a game changer. This Gen 2 is very clean! Overall, I love the flexibility this new grinder is affording me!

Thank you for revealing one of your secrets Lance 😂 I’m so glad you called out the lid seating issue. My fingers are stiff due to arthritis so I knock stuff over all the time (put away the good wine glasses). I had to stop using my Moccamaster because I would knock over the filter basket all the time. I just unboxed the Breville Precision Brewer and need to upgrade my brew grinder (Breville Smart Grinder Pro) and the Ode 2 would be a contender if they made a lid that snaps or seats in well.

Hey Lance, great video. Whatever it’s worth: I upgraded from the gen1 ode to gen2 and at first the anti static tech was great. It helped a ton, the grind was really fluffy and …not charged with static. But after about 6-8 months of daily use (and no cleaning just using the knocker), the grounds are pretty staticky and messy again. I tore it all down and cleaned it out, and it worked pretty well (like new) again for a few weeks but now it’s back to getting clogged up again. The wires that are energized get absolutely caked with grinds and I guess needs to be cleaned regularly. Now as I type it out it seems so obvious lol.

Got the Gen 2 last week. It's actually my first electric grinder. Before now I hand ground everything with a 1zpresso K-Plus. Which is great. However, I do a lot of cold brew for my lady and I throughout the week. An batch brewing on a hand grinder sucks. But so far it's been great. It's interesting to task the difference between a conical burr and a flat burr grinder. It's more of a generic coffee tast I suppose. But it's still a great cup. Just... different in it's own way. I (and I presume many others) don't have the financial means to buy all the different SSPs, Lab Sweets, let alone in different sizes whatsoever, so I can't compare them on my own. However, I would love to know what a "feed rate" is and how it affects taste, what differences exist between, say, pentagonal and heptagonal there are (except the number of teeth, obviously). I agree with you and Hoff-daddy on the price...if the Opus has a stronger motor and can grind finer, while being cheaper than the Ode, what could they do to bring those elements to the Ode and keep the price flat? What's really driving the up? As an engineer, props for the anti-static solution. I've seen that used in my line of work, on equipment worth millions, to ensure tiny plastic parts feed without sticking.

Since day one our new Ode Gen 2 has been prone to jamming. We only use it once per day, sometimes less, but have already experienced at least 7 lockups in 30 days when grinding medium to dark roast beans at a setting of 7-8 for French Press. I am now reading similar reports from Ode 2 owners. What is going on and is there a fix? For $350 one should not have to be concerned about such an unreliably functioning product. Note: when putting the same beans into a Lagom Mini set for espresso with a Flair 58+, I haven't had a single lockup. Time to return it while I can and choose something more reliable? Any advice appreciated.

It’s unfortunate that Timemore doesn’t seem to be planning on making a 110v version of the 078 for the US market. Looking forward to your thoughts about the 064 to decide whether I’m getting the Timemore or the Ode Gen 2.

hi there, how dos default ODE 2 burr perform for the Aeropress? you said it's a "filter" focused grinder. I swap between v60 and aeropress and am frustrated by the click-guesswork on commandant when changing the grind size back and forth. This looks like a nice way to solve the issue :) Thanks in advance

I do have a have a question. I'm currently using a single dose Mazzer mini. I used it for espresso and V60 but I'm only really making V60. I'm constantly reading that you shouldn't use an espresso grinder for filter but im wondering what your oppinion is on that matter. And could i improve my filter coffee with a differnt 58mm burr and if yes do you have recogmendansion

Thank you Lance, I have 2 small question and only you trust you to answer. 1. As just about all my coffee drank as filter is med-dark to dark, will I be making a mistake getting the SSP MP for this grinder? 2. I am willing to spend upto 1200, if there is anything else you suggest for filter focus I would appreciate it, size is irrelevant, and again thank you for what you do, we are very lucky for your hard work and travels. 🤗🤗🤗

Only in the last 2 weeks have I decided I want to get my first set of gear to make coffee at home. I've been doing a lot of looking around on reddit and KZfaq, and I'm pretty sure the ode gen 2 is going to my choice. I think I'm lucking out a bit with the timing of my first grinder purchase too, given it happened around the same time the gen 2 has become available. Question for anyone who can give a rough answer, if one grinds 5 pounds a month through this thing, what is the rough lifespan of the motor and burs? The motor probably being a note important answer given the burs can be replaced.

Got myself the Ode Gen1 "hackers edition" that comes with the Gen2 burrs (because in Germany the Ode Gen2 grinder is/was stupidly overpriced) and from day1 , this cute litle grinder has a place in my heart. With RDT static isn't too much of an issue and the hopper is... ok. Might switch it out for a Gen2 hopper once the parts hit the european market. The burrs itself are working nicely and fit my personal flavor profile, which is slightly more body and complexity over clarity. Your story on how you got involved in development of the gen2 burrs makes me love them even more.

Dude you and fellow did a fantastic job at making the burrs. I still swapped for some cast burrs, but even still it was massive diminishing returns. I feel like for 99% of the people in the coffee hobby the gen 2 burrs will be plenty. You guys mastered the peak before diminishing returns and value for money. I honestly almost regret spending the 200 for the cast burrs lol

Loved the video, and the work Nick and the team at fellow have done with the Gen 2. It really is a nice object to have on my counter. I'm going to give it more time and experiment with another coffee or two, but the feeling I'm getting is that I must have got a lemon, because I have only got maybe one decent cup in the first week of ownership. I need some comparisons with other grinders, but so far I'm shocked that my Encore with default burs is producing better results in the cup. Everything I'm getting is muddy, choking the V60 easily, and I haven't found a position on the dial yet that's let me avoid significant unpleasant dryness. If it's possible to get a good cup with this particular unit, it's at the very least quite difficult, and for $500 CAD, I'm hoping for cups that don't make me want to rinse my mouth out afterward, even at weaker ratios and coarser grind settings. It's quite surprising, but I'm hoping to eventually get some decent results with it, because it is a really nice design, with a few minor problems like the somewhat irritating catch cup. It grinds so fast, it's quiet, it's clean, it feels nice to use.

@Toronto_Luddite
@Toronto_Luddite Жыл бұрын
@@LanceHedrick I have since checked alignment, thanks to your video and others that demonstrate the market test and shimming. It was useful, and now I'm getting some of that acidity and flavour expression I'd expect out of some of my lighter roasted beans, but I'm still not realistically able to grind within the 4-5 range without the resulting brew just being dominated by body. I usually think 'There are some of those flavours I got when I tried the same coffee ground on a Sette at 600 microns, but only if it wasn't nearly as dense and syrupy". So in that sense, it's really hard to tell what's just a matter of my perception regarding these burrs when they're performing ideally. You and others who've reviewed it, along with their own description, emphasize body, but no so much so that I couldn't get an easy to drink cup, but I'm getting rather tough-to-like cups. A V60 for example is closer to Moka pot or maybe a french press in terms of oilyness or siltyness, almost like I'm going in for a bite rather than a sip. For a 4-6 cups a day, these results are just tricky to get down

I got those for Christmas for my ode 1.1 and they are a game changer! Sweet, good body, nice acidity although I have noticed a muddy bed and many fines. Haven't seasoned tho so it could change. Also I struggled with shim alligning them because of their backside geometry. Any tips?
@ciejaygear
@ciejaygear Жыл бұрын
Tons of fines are inevitable I'm afraid with these machines because they go at an insanely fast speed for some strange reason 1400 rpm !! I overlooked this before I bought my Gen 2 unfortunately, and realized it when it was too late to send it back. You can read my comments on it above. I can't help think it was planned into their marketing strategy because how simple is it to slow the motor down, like a lot? Buying one of their 'Shimmy' filters' works well but it's a whole extra step to the workflow process. I honestly don't have the motivation to use it every single time. Only days when I have extra time and I want to really taste the potential of the strains I'm working with. If you know anyone that wants to buy a fairly new Ode 2 and save some money, please let me know. Cheers

Where are you getting this information thay higher RPM with flats equates to more fines? It isn't accurate. It is for cones...
@bp060
@bp060 Жыл бұрын
@@ciejaygear nah that's not it. As Lance already said fines on higher rpm is with conicals not flat burrs. Also I wouldn't reach that far into the cookie jar and claim it was intentional to sell a different product. The shimmy has a different target demographic. It's an easy way to improve a cheap grinder without investing into a more expensive one. Why would they Programm a smart rpm which adjusts the rpm when they would know it leads to a worse cup. Nah man, I know cooperations often only profit on mind but intentionally making a product worst would just harm them instead of selling more shimmys. Your reasoning doesn't make sense

I want that hopper more than anything. I upgraded the burrs in my gen 1. I’m just annoyed having to fiddle with coffee beans to go down the chute! It’s also too bad the ionizer isn’t backwards compatible to the gen 1. I would love to just upgrade my gen 1 to be close to this level.

I'm a noob and this would ne my first grinder but is this something that would have no problem grinding 300 grams all at once (obviously having to refill the hopper a few times) ? I make a weeks batchof cold brew so it'd have to do around that much as wells a single dosing for v60 or aeropress.
