Nice tool box, Bob! I do have a suggestion though. It does need to be bolted down. I speak from experience. I was hit from the rear in a company van about 10 years ago, when I drove a slot machine repair route. The only thing that saved my bacon was the fact that there was a cage between the cargo area and the passenger area. Tool boxes, tools, parts, and other miscellaneous items flew and bounced in all directions inside that van, with one exception - the single tool box that was bolted to the floor and padlocked shut. This isn't something I read about, saw on Facebook, or something that happened to the friend of a cousin of a guy I know - it happened to me. Our manager raised holy cain with ownership, and within about 3 months, every van in the fleet had 3 tool and parts boxes and locking cabinets bolted into each van to prevent cargo from impaling someone in the event of an accident. Just something to think about.

Really nice addition to your rig! Since you asked, I would make a couple changes. 1) The back section of the box is just going to be super hard to use. I think I would make the drawers really long, able to be pulled out, with dividers to allow for separate sectioning. 2) I would orient the ribbed mat 90º so that the ribs are running front-to-back. Sliding anything on them as-is is going to be impossible, particularly things like grocery bags that will catch. I realize the idea of the mat is traction, but I think this will end up being a hassle to use. But great project, and congrats on the video sponsorship!

Next time you could try to build the enclosure in two parts split down the length of the vehicle. Then you can keep the "wings" and drop each one in easier. When I used to build up false floors for subwoofer enclosures in car audio builds, that's what we'd do to make it much more manageable.

Thanx for that good idea, which I will use to design my "picnic kitchen" setup for the rear of my small Honda Fit. The rear door surrounds and wheel arches intrude into the space available, but such a split system could overcome that limitation.

I've always loved making stuff; I remember using a rasp and a vise to make wooden swords out of stakes as a kid. A lack of tools never really bothered me. Don't get me wrong, now I've got a table saw, plunge router, orbital sander, etc, but I didn't always have those tools. For everyone in the comments section bemoaning the fact that they can't build stuff because they don't have the tools, I should say this: Buy a few sheets of plywood, a drill if you don't have one, (if you really can't afford it, a hand-drill and screwdriver will do), some screws, two hinges, a handle, and some wood glue. With those tools, you can make a box. It won't look fancy, it won't be perfect, but you made it, and that's what matters. Again, thank you Bob, for another excellent video.

Nice job! I like the rubber matting you added on the bottom and the top. I removed the back seat out of my '98 jeep wrangler tj and built a deck/trunk in it's place a few years ago. I used 3/4 marine ply and matching outdoor carpet to boot. I went so far as to wrap the deck around the top edge of the jeep tub and rear roll cage. When the tailgate is open, the center top section can be slid out temporarily to accommodate larger items. Like yourself, I normally keep the typical car stuff in trunk. I used large storage tubs for organization and water proofing just in case. The front edge of the box extends up just behind the front seats. That's where I have a hi-lift jack mounted.

Nice work! I made something similar years back that I use during hunting season. It goes in the back of my Tahoe, but is one large drawer with dividers. I can fit my shotgun diagonally, and then all the gear for me and my dog in the drawer. Really cleans up the back, rather than bags and gear scattered everywhere. Slides would have been nice - I just used a hardwood strip with a little wax on it, and it slides fine. Love your projects - keep up the great stuff!

Hey Bob- I had something similar in an old 4runner when I was a contractor. I HIGHLY recommend attaching it to the truck. Ii used turn buckles to strap it to the cargo loops because I was always thinking about if there was a turn over circumstance the tools inside and the platform itself would become a horrendous projectile. That being said your build is awesome. I LOVE the rubber mat.

I built one out of scrap particle board as a test for my Ford Bronco. I built it to fit around the wheel wells and from the tailgate to the back of the rear seat in the back so it gives me a solid floor so nothing can fall between the box and the sides. This also ensures the box has nowhere to go when hitting tight curves or when taking off/braking. I've got two wide drawers that fit between the wheel wells and run from the tailgate to the back seat, and one drawer on each side of those that fit between the tailgate and each wheel well. The top has been carpeted to match the interior to trick anyone trying to look in and to aid in grip for cargo on top of the box. It works well and while you'd thing that it wouldn't, it creates a lot more storage. I've had engine blocks, bags of cement, brick, etc on top of the box and it hasn't failed yet. I do want to rebuild it eventually out of 3/4" plywood just for the peace of mind of the integrity.

Hi Bob - Thanks for the great video. I was half way through with my Jeep drawer storage build when I discovered yours and got some great ideas from you. I particularly liked the rubber mat idea, so that's what I did. The problem I ran into was the use of Liquid Nails FuzIT. After reading the instructions, I laid down the beads of the stuff on top of the box. Then I immediately placed the mat down and noticed the beads of glue did not flatten out as I had expected, even after rolling it out and placing weight on top of it. Probably no one would notice except for me, but I was very disappointed in the product for this application. Of course there is no going back now. Anyway, I am grateful for your detailed video and the terrific ideas.

I made a storage box for my FZJ80 as well. Wound up using automotive carpet and staples as opposed to rubber. I suppose the rubber will last longer. Just thought the carpet would be easy enough to replace if needed. Also, for the areas above the wheel wells, I wound up cutting two pieces of plywood and contouring them to the sides of the cargo area. Then, used a piano hinge to that they would both open. I use that area for random extras that don't fit in the drawers (recovery gear, tools and first aid for me). Great video!!

You should mount it on under side mount industrial sliders that bolt through the floor of the truck to the frame. It will secure it in place in case of an impact, and give you the option to use it as a pull out work space in case you need a work area out in the field. When I worked in fire services and EMS the supervisor vehicles had similar pull out storage that allowed for easy access and work area.

I made a box similar to this for my 4Runner. Few suggestions for you. #1 I used turn-buckles to secure it down to the floor. Required some drilling and sealing but very secure, and doesn't move at all. #2 I would attached some loops or tie-down points to the top deck. I use these on mine to secure camping gear or dog crates while out camping or 4 wheeling. #3 those side tool boxes you are planning, expect them to be a PITA! I did some flip-up ones for mine and they never really turned out all that useful especially considering the amount of extra time they took. All in all good job!

I have a 93 Land Cruiser and I love the cruiser vid's. Thanks! A cool welding video would be a mount over one of your wheel wells to hold an on board air compressor.

Extremely efficient build and editing. The audio gear handles were a nice touch.. (At least that's what they looked like)
