Friends! Thanks for watching!! Couple things - I only intended to show you what I use for Land Navigation - i cannot stress enough that when you are moving out, to carry MORE than how to navigate - you should have items pertaining to: food, fire, water, shelter, first aid, navigation, communication, self-defense, and the ability to maintain a core body temp. Second - if you're looking for items; check out my Navigation List on Amazon: www.amazon.com/shop/stokermatic?listId=4MQT1NYOFHOW And as always - STAY STOKED!

I subscribed yesterday and I am both learning and enjoying your channel. I live here in southeast Texas where its most tidal marsh but just north and west of Beaumont is a lot of Pine forest and Cypress bottoms. Most deer hunting and camping is there. For trail markers I use small strips of 3m tape off of safety vests. Sometimes you can find them cheap at a thrift shop or Goodwill store. They illuminate well in low light times of the day. Having nothing to do with nav but a cheap tip for tarp clamps is both ends of those plastic clothes hangers you see in stores. The ones which have a clamp at each end with the small metal tab you push up or down to release the garment. Hacksaw those two ends off the hanger and toss em in your pack. There's a large enough hole to pull paracord thru. They weigh almost nothing and work well. I bought the US military compass you use abut 5 years ago and I like it, I'm learning quite a bit from your instructions on land nav. Thanks

I am a Vietnam era Seabee. I use old school because it has always worked for me. I trust it because I trust my skill with my gear. I take care of it and it takes care if me. M1911A1 series 70, ka-bar, my old medium Alice pack....everything tried and true. My main compass is the model 27 backed up by a Silva orienteering compass with button compass on my wrist.

When I was 14, I used to hike on a 500 acre property. Used nothing but Intuition, observations and the sky. Many trails, but often stayed off them. And now learning from you. I'll be trying out my new gear soon. Although, hiking is limited to smaller acreage

I need to get a whistle. Keep forgetting that! Need reflective tape/material as well. Both very important items, and I don't have either. of them so good wake-up call. In my land nav' kit I keep a magnifying glass - for reading maps, but also for fires and a first aid visual aid. They are certainly worth including, they take up very little space and they're weightless. Another down to Earth, sensible, inspiring video. Thanks Top! They always help, man.

I have the Cammenga 27, MapTools protractor and a notebook, but I haven't been using range tape or flags. I tend to hike on known trails, but did get to do some real navigation several years back in a big snow field where the trail wasn't visible. I either use the Forest Service topo maps or make a custom one on CalTopo. I just recently made some ranger beads and have been practicing pace counting. Old school methods just feel right to me, and to be honest, as a software engineer, I need a break from all the high tech.

Greetings from Greece. Nice informative and inspiring video! My setup usally contains an 8 litre camelback with a water bladder, my smartphone,an area hiking map,two compasses, a Suunto MC2 with built yourself declination (setup and forget)and Silva Ranger as a back up. I also carry a write in the rain notebook, a pencil (writes in the rain!!), a victorinox ( Hunter model)- or a mora Kansbol,a lighter, an aluminum French Army cup with coffe and sugar, a small trangia stove and -the most usefull item_ A First Aid Kit. I might include the reflective tape and flags you mentioned,because it will be very handy when you shoot azimuths from a distance !!! Thank you again for your effort ,time and good ideas included in the video.Will keep watching..

Good video Stoker. I've been carrying a Cammenga since I started watching your videos. I have a mini protractor from maptools that I carry in a pocket I made in back of my notebook. I also have range flags I made after seeing that video. I still have my Silva ranger compass, but it requires too much fumbling around compared to the lensatic.

I would recommend a different color rang tape, florescent yellow or something. Timber companies, forest service, etc. use orange. I use two colors. Orange and blue tied together. That way I know it's mine. Just an FYI.

Great vid top! For those adding to this kit, it's a land nav kit. As a whole does it cross into 1st aid anf other, of course. Ya dont need bandaids to navigate. Each kit fits with the other.

Stoker ... Another very useful video on kit contents. Mine is very similar with standard stuff and then I rotate various other pieces of equipment. My kit consist of a Cammenga 3H and Suunto MC2, Maptools Super GTA, Rite in the Rain pen/0.5 pencil and notepads, appropriate maps, IFAC, cordage, tape, H2O, fire kit, whistles, snacks or food, handkerchiefs, knives and personal protection. The rest of the items I vary depending on the trek and how how long I'm out such as tarp, gas or alcohol personal stove etc. This is my goto channel for all things outdoors and landnav. Stay safe stay strong and focus on the job at hand... 👍😉

Great vid, have just found your channel and particularly enjoy the landnav sections. Never used a lensatic compass before but saw your Silva and the tool you carry. Did yours not come with tool inside the lanyard buckle. On mine the buckle pulls apart to use the tool.

Interesting to hear somebody talk about actually using a whistle. They seem obligatory, but not useful. Does Search & Rescue or Military actually find people by hearing a whistle?
@STOKERMATIC
@STOKERMATIC 3 жыл бұрын
Probably not often - but maybe more if someone had a whistle on them? For communication purposes, I've used whistles as part of my plan to cut through other noises (weapons firing for example).

Excellent video Stokerman, I love how you edited the vid, disappear and reappear was pretty slick. Old school, iam a simple person, like you, having to navigate in an "Analog" method, to me, is a much more reliable system. True story here. Google the Union Pacific R/R line that runs through the Tehachippi mountain in Tehachippi,Ca Back in the 1800 that rail line was surveyed using a pack mule. The Surveyer followed the Mule through the Tehachippi's and that was how the railroad was laid. To this day, believe it or not, with modern GPS, Satellites and all the high tech stuff available to Man, there "Is no better way" to get over and through the Mountains than what the pack mules tracks established. That's a true story. What you carry Stokerman is like you said "Tried, true and tested. I think your missing a very important item, and that would be a First aid kit. You never know what your going to face in the woods, a length some paracord would aid in tying a branch for a splint, slip on something and tear a hole in your leg, gonna need something for the trauma. Only my opinion, and something I always carry. Outside of that, I think you have the essential tools for Navigation, to have a safe day.... Oh, a good 🔪 knife onboard and Fire 🔥 tool (flint & steel, ferro rod) What am I forgetting?. Once again, great video Stokerman 🇺🇸✌️

Do you have a video that shows you how to find "where you are" on a map even if you your already Lost. How do you give yourself an 8-digit coordinate of where you are on a map ? unless you're in a parking lot or at some point of reference 🤔. I don't even know if I explain that right

Great video how long does a compass last for or need replaced and how do you test one to see if it's still accurate
@STOKERMATIC
@STOKERMATIC 3 жыл бұрын
Jason - great question! I've been working on a video for how to determine how accurate your compass is - and as far as how often - compasses shouldn't lose their accuracy. My compass is a 3H meaning it has Tritium markings, with a half life of @ 10 years - so at some point, they will cease to illuminate; however, the needle will still point towards magnetic north.
