Land Rover Discovery Sport poor ownership experience
10 trips back to the dealership within only 18 months ownership!
With special thanks to absolutely no one at JLR - who quite clearly have a fantastic marketing and design department, however, fall short no sooner the car is built from materials to quality of any "craftsmanship" - the whole product itself fell short.
This video is a brief overview including both subjective and factual thoughts after what can only be described as a rather poor ownership experience.
A few months back I put together some basic footage before we said a "fond farewell" to the Wife's Land Rover Discovery Sport. Where in 18 Months we had 10 trips back to the dealership.
So, what does Car Mad Dad think?
To all you Land Rover purists - as stated on the video... We wanted to love the car. BUT THE FACTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.
Thank you to everyone for your HONEST thoughts and feedback.
Thank you for watching

kevinranders well ya know you can’t base it off of just that genius. Sometimes shit happens and new stuff breaks, you could move into a brand new house and a week later a door handle could break off or something. It happens, quit judging off of one little thing when you don’t even know what it could’ve been. Your car could do the same

I too bought a Land Rover Discovery Sport with the intention of keeping it for many years. After two years and many trips back to the dealership it was so disappointing it just had to go. I eventually and somewhat reluctantly took the advice of my son and the Which? magazine owners reports and bought a Lexus. NO Problems whatsoever and confident in the knowledge that when I go away in it I will get back home with NO Worries, AHH so relaxing....

I posted this 2 years ago (see several comments below for my original comment) "We live in Northern California (8000' mountain passes, snow, ice, forest service roads, etc) and we own a 2017 Disco Sport HSE. We've had it nearly 9 months and not a single problem. Besides our usual winter shenanigans, I even off-road the crap out of it just for giggles. Our first Land Rover and we like it a lot. Definitely not as capable as my Toyota Tacoma 4X4, but for a little family SUV, it's pretty special." Here's my update as of 09/2020: Well, our 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport provided many miles of off-road hijinks and good times. Like I commented in 2018, we off-roaded the crap outta that little car here in Northern California (apologies to my wife, it was her car). NOT A SINGLE PROBLEM... EVER. We just sold it so we could get another Land Rover Discovery Sport, this time a 2020 model. We love this car and feel it's great value, attractive, very well built and capable. I'm very confident in the Land Rover brand and will keep buying them as long as they keep building a quality automobile. Lastly, our local Land Rover dealership's customer service is 5 star. All in all, a great brand and the UK should be proud.

Finally someone calling it like it is. Great car when they’re working but any other time they’re a huge pain. My ownership experience has been very similar to yours. We’re just coming up 12 months and it’s already been back to the dealer 8 times with 2 unscheduled services. We’re not even half way to the first scheduled service yet. Very disappointing.

Same here. We've had the car for 4 months. It has been in the garage 5 times so far - engine issues, electronics, smoke coming from under the bonnet, got stranded on motorway services because the immobiliser locked the car and it couldn't be opened or the engine started... Now Bluetooth stopped working (cannot even select it as a media source as it disappeared from there) so it will be another week without the car while they attempt to fix it. The stop-start is on but it kicked in just once. Overall a great car but very, very disappointing reliability.

I’m on my thirteenth new Land Rover product since the 1980’s, probably done over 750,000 miles in them in total. Currently own a Discovery HSE Lux. Half a dozen, minor problems, in all that time. Brilliant cars. On the other side of the coin, my ‘play’ car, a 2016 Ford Focus RS FPM375, needs a new head gasket under a warranty recall!

Spot on review. On paper it’s the perfect vehicle for my family’s needs. Looks fantastic, perfect size, appears premium quality. Then the reality of modern LR ownership kicks in. 6 visits to the dealer and over 1mth off the road within the first 12mths for me. Engine replaced at 10,000km (due known ingenium fault). Ongoing rattles and squeaks. Numerous unresolved design issues - worst of which is the oil dilution issue resulting in actual service intervals of 8,000km in my experience compared with advertised service intervals of 34,000km. Add to this LR’s costumer service and it is just a world of disappointment.

We own a 2017 Discovery Sport with 15,000 miles. We love it. We have had only minor issues: transmission software update, satnav software update, updated underbody guard for off-roading, bad door seal, start button trim wrinkle, and door trim loose. Much more repairs than our BMW, but much less than our Cadillac.

Oh god... thanks for uploading this video. Was looking at the recently facelifted 2019 model, until luckily, this popped up in my recommended. This video, alongside my next door neighbours’ previous 2 Evoque’s and current Velar constantly going back to the dealer every few months has put me right off. I’ve had 8 Audi’s in a row, and never had a problem, but I hate the way Audi is going as a brand at the moment so I thought I’d change it up a bit... maybe I’ll stick to my roots. Bought the wife a Volvo XC40 last month so maybe a XC60 will suffice.

What a shame JLR can't deliver a consistent ownership experience. I've had 3 Discovery's, and loved all of them. We still have our 2014 Disco 4.5, and it never fails to impress. However, I have read of many ownership issues so know that our experience, whilst probably typical, is not what all owners have. I'm holding onto mine for another 6 months until the 2019 model comes out before we trade up to the new Disco, by which time we hope all the gremlins have been ironed out.

Maybe funny but not my experience. We have been driving Land Rovers for the past 20 years and have had seven to date mainly RR Sports and found them to be extremely reliable. I downsized to a Discovery Sport same as the one above, a 2016 HSE and had no issues. Only time I got stuck was when I had a puncture on a tyre wall and the tyre chemical wouldn't do a temp repair so had to call the RAC (Never buy a car without a proper spare wheel!). Am back with a RR Sport and have had no issues. The one thing I would say against LR is the claimed MPG for their vehicles is fictitious but suspect that goes for most vehicle manufacturers

Had a very similar experience, love the Land Rover Brand, was told that the issues were long gone. Now after 18 months of ownership it is being returned under the rejection policy. I really wanted to love this car and there were times when it worked that I did but agree you are always in the back of your mind waiting for the next thing to go wrong. Our list wasn't quite as long as yours but - AdBlue Vapours entering the cabin - replaced gasket, Exhaust fumes entering the cabin - another replaced gasket, Timing chain replaced, Balance shafts replaced, heater fan failed and replaced, heated seats no longer hot. Just a real pain and now i'm faced the with dilemma of what to replace it with? Any ideas? We need the boot space for our dog and have a little one on the way too!

As someone who worked on LR from 1975 to 1993, I remember the Toyota Advert in Austrailia... ‘if you want to go to the outback take a Land Rover. If you want to come back, take a Toyota’. So true. Yes you might be lucky and own a rare LR and look after it and it may run forever. Difference is, every Toyota does that, even when abused.

Exactly the same problems with doors and electronic issues after the 8th time back at landrover she traded it for a rangerover evoque that was according to allot of reviews faultless. Needless to say it has been back at landrover 5 times in the last year with major problems on the boot and wipers not working. They even said that the keyless start wont work when it is close to a cellphone ,making it our problem and stuck with a car that doesn’t recognize the key and wont start sometimes. I initially just thaught it might be the batery on the key fob . Horrible cars . We need more honest reviews like this.

I have a Freelander 2 2.2TD4. While it’s not a great car, reliability of the mechanical stuff is brilliant! It has the PSA diesel which in itself is a van type motor and I just did the cambelt at 220000km and even the outgoing belt was in good shape. I do however have regular problems with trim breaking. My daughter and I can strip out nearly all the plastics and fix them by now and this is where my Mitsubishi Outlander is just so much better is in the trim quality. I often wish I could put the entire drivetrain and suspension in the Outlander because that would be my choice in a perfect medium sized suv.

We have 2 others in the company that are also without issue.. average travel distance is about 3000Km per month for each car. No issues to report. It is a well known fact that over 350000 DS have been manufactured and only a very minute number of these have some faults. Every manufacturer has cars with faults going out into the market, so don't be naive into thinking that LR are somehow immune to this, but consider their low percentage of cars being problematic. That small number of owners , however, are certainly very vocal about their misfortune.

Talking about real ownership. I’ve gone for the premium British brand like you and i got 2 break down within 6 days after collection. The first break down was 1hr after collection from the dealer. Second problem is 1 day after the first problem was fix. The car jerks so heavily that i felt it will break down and stall when putting gas on D mode. This is a brand new car that came out from the factory. The time I spend with LR assist is more then the time i drove the car. I’ve rejected the car and dealer will source replacement vehicle.

Car Mad Dad Something is not right. When everything works the car drive like dream and you felt special in the car. The second problem on the car is to so with the lazy technician in the dealer didn’t do a good job when replacing the battery modular. The Air Intake of the car was not screw in at all, it just hang inside the bonnet so thats why my car jerks. Plus the front grill was scruff as well. I’ve already rejected the car and will get replacement new car. Hopefully third time lucky, otherwise it will be trade in on my 3rd year PCP instead of keeping it like was plan.

My dad is planning to buy a discovery sport. I’m so glad I saw this video, I’m going to advice him against it. Rattles and creeks are the exact thing that drives him mad and I honestly thought JLR reliability was sorted off late. He’s quiet old now and this will be the last car he’s gonna buy. The HSE spec costs about £70,000 where he lives in India and it just doesn’t seem like a quality product. I don’t think this car will last too long given it’s reliability issues and poor road conditions in India.

I Bought a brand new discovery sport 7 seater September 2020 and it completely broken down, luckily of the motorway 1 week after purchase. No one could help me push this vehicle of the road, not even AA or even jump start it as it’s a hybrid. It took numerous road users to push this vehicle of the road safety. Only the Land Rover mechanic can assist if it breaks down not AA. It’s been recalled back more times than I can even recall. The gear box has been replaced, electrical fire 🔥 recall, the petrol tank has been replaced and numerous computer issues recall. I have been in more replacement vehicles than my own purchased vehicle. I have never enjoyed driving it as a warning ⚠️ sign always flashes up. It’s been in the garage for the last 2 months since Febuary 2022 and I was given 100% re-assurance all service was done and it’s safe to drive. Within 12 hours, it’s flashing service required. The lookers Land Rover and the manufactures and dealership are a real nightmare to work with. It’s a really sad situation be in after purchasing this vehicle brand new for £41,968.80 in September 2020. Currently it’s being referred to the Ombudsman.

Really good fair review and in line with my experience with a 2016 HSE Black, should be a fantastic car, but ruined by: constant squeaks from rear tailgate, rattles from lower dash where gear selector is, condensation in lights, internal door handle came loose, poor mpg compounded by ridiculously small fuel tank, service indicator doesn’t work, drinks AdBlue like it’s going out of fashion, comedy reversing camera specially designed to get obscured by muck the second after you’ve washed the car, awful dealers (I mean truly awful), my 2016 car shipped with 2014 sat nav maps, and then LR had the cheek to want a £100 when eventually they released a map update in 2017 , gearbox anything but smooth, hesitant in power delivery and jerky changes, and whomever designed the rear row seat belt tidy away clips should be taken out the back of the LR design workshop and shot, functional they are not. It’s such a shame, when it’s working I really love it, it’s quiet, drives nicely, great in bad weather, airy and spacious, but don’t be fooled by the marketing, the quality is not reflective of the premium product it is proclaimed to be. Oh and what’s with the weird mist that comes out of the fuel tank when filling up?

I like my Defender which my father was kind enough to give me. Keeping the Defender but thinking about a Evoque for in town driving. Still trying to decide if Tata Motors can do what Ford was not able to do. It seems natural to conclude that those companies which experience the greatest upheaval in ownership and market turbulence will also have the poorest reliability. A quality product requires the resources to create and sustain it.

I could find many places in the UK where that would struggle. If you wish to thoroughly test its capabilities, join a 4x4 club and do a few green laning trips (wales, peak district, fens, local routes etc...) and pay n' play days on courses tougher than the land rover experience tracks. It will be surprising just what the technology can do to provide the required grip & stability, but equally surprising how the big rims, low profile tyres, limited suspension travel and low ground clearance hinder it compared to the older landy's and many of the other 4x4's (new & old) on the market. They make suspension lift kits and high profile knobly tyres for a reason, but land rover seem to have forgotten why, and no longer give you these option on any new cars. Despite the importance for those in more rural situations 🤔.

My mate bought one in Adelaide Australia, his plan was to drive it back to Sydney only had 10,000klms on it . the balance shaft went in the middle of nowhere overnight and it was leaking diesel from what was most likely the injection pump . had to get it trucked to Sydney all covered under warranty he was gutted and was joking that it probably wouldnt make the short 1300 klms home before it left lol. Which is nothing for a near new car. There was obviously a reason why the previous owner sold it with such low mileage. He sold it soon after.

I always wanted a Range Rover or a Land Rover, I'd never be able to afford the sport or the full size etc and the evoque just seemed a bit puny, so the discovery sport was my option. However chose an Audi A4 over it due to the fact the A4 felt less rough, the Disco sport didn't feel as posh on the inside. Also numerous friends told me to avoid Land Rover/Range Rover, my coworker bought a used evoque for 25k and had a repair bill of 1.5k on his first service. Still, something in my mind still tells me that I should've gotten the Disco, never had an SUV in my life, but again, I don't wanna fork out thousands on repairs lol. My A4 hasn't been perfect either, the fuel filler cap is currently stuck open and Peter Vardy is still waiting for parts to repair it under warranty, AC isn't blowing cold, again waiting for it to be repaired. I once tried to start it and it said something like "Engine running. Warning! Switch off ignition before leaving car".... I was trying to start the car to get to work in the morning... Still, hasn't costed me anything out of my pocket in the 6 months of ownership.

I feel like a lot of "ownership" problems with cars are just from people not understanding modern vehicles. I'm not knocking you but just saying. The burning smell (a bit like a rubbery burning smell) is actually the smell of the DPF after a regeneration. They always smell like the engine is overheated. When you go on a long journey the car will regenerate the DPF by forcing extra fuel in and getting it EXTREMELY hot, hence the burning smell. Nothing to worry about.

Its very interesting to see lots of owners having issues with this car. It appears that it’s only the British owners that are having problems with the vehicle. Perhaps the British models are not the same quality as the ones built and shipped for countries outside the UK? We’ve had a 2016 HSE disco sport (ingenium engine as well) for almost two years now. No problems whatsoever. Bought it in the Netherlands, using it primarily in north Eastern Europe where the weather and therefore road conditions can get tough. It is really a great car and surely great value for the price. Very surprised to see these types of videos

I feel for you. Get a Lexus Rx450h. I did, and all of the problems go away. Predictable price for annual service until the end of the vehicle's life and no bills in between. I rely on it for family journeys from the UK to Greece and anything in between; snow or heat it keeps going. All the mods coms you pay in other brands as extras are standard. Largest number of airbags in the class, did I mention 0-60 in 7secs? It's so quiet, like an auditorium on wheels. And you arrive at any destination as relaxed as when you first sat behind the wheel. You will not look at another car until you want to. And if you do you; you are very likely to find the other car to be inferior. Max Km I did on one day is 1000 miles and me and car where fine the next day for another 1000. After having experienced Lexus I don't think I can rely on anything else for me and my family. I know they’re an expensive, well made car but if you pay a lot of money for something, most people (rightly or wrongly) want that wow factor. Especially on the interior. Ironically landrover give the wow factor but little else! If I was keeping the car beyond the warranty I wouldn’t consider landrover. My Range Rover was amazing; Until it went wrong. The only good thing I can say is that Landrover stood by their warranty, even when we had to be rescued when we were 1500km off road in the middle of the Sandy Desert in Australia. When the alternator decided not to work and the vehicle had only done 35000km. Another interesting point the clutch burnt out after 2 days on the road. It hadn't been checked properly in the pre delivery, and I was on the local beach. Luckily the tide was going out. You have been really lucky.

I also have a lot of wind noise in the cabin to the extent I often check that the windows are closing correctly. The car cost over £51,000 WTF is going on?? It's just embarrassing. It's going back into the garage tomorrow so they can have another go at resolving the problem. I've told them if it isn't fixed once and for all this time then they are to instigate their vehicle rejection procedure as I'll be handing it back to them. No one should pay good money for a car with these issues. WIsh I'd kept my Mercedes ML, or bought the new badged GLE

Shocking how poor LR reliability is on the whole. Their cars look amazing but I wouldn't buy one because I don't have time to be continuously visiting the garage to get it fixed.

The Burning smell that you are getting with the car is the engine doing a sort of cleaning cycle! It happens every 400-600miles! Iv had it on all of our jags and land rovers! Some garages are not sure what it is but you have to talk to the right people to find out what the problem really was!

We’ve had ours (hse black 2017) and so far so good although the rear light has some condensation issues which are being sorted under warranty. Hoping it’s more reliable than you make out as I love the brand and it’s a great family chariot!

I have condesation in my front lights of a 2016 S Class. Mercedes fix is not new headlights at £1000 a side. It is to put sachets behind the reflector to absorbd the moisture!!!! Burning smell from the rear is the DPF. All DPF cars are like this, some more noticable than others. You should also notice the exhaust sound slightly more "boomy" during a Regen. Again its more obvious on some cars than others, if I wind my window down I can hear it in the Merc. I hope your replacement is to your liking.

I bought a 2018 Disco HSE Lux. Car went in for minor things and came back out with worse faults. After 3 months of woeful service I managed to get a buy back after complaining to JLR HQ. The car looked gorgeous and drivetrain was great but the electromechanical systems, software and dealer support were dreadful. Now awaiting delivery of a Q7, I wanted to love the Disco but feel very let down by JLR.

Only got our 2018 hse sport in may. It’s recently spent 6 weeks at Landrover having thousands of pounds worth of work done (including the passenger door that wouldn’t open sometimes!) luckily all being paid for by the warranty company. I picked it up on Friday and my engine light came on before I was even home!! The reversing camera hardly works and comes up on the screen, the passenger heated seat doesn’t work. Luckily prices for used cars have gone up so much we’ve been quoted more for our car than we paid for it. I can’t trust it any longer, looking at getting a BMW X5.

We were identical Zoe - curb appeal yes - but you’ll spend more time in the dealership than you would like I suspect. BMW or Merc should do it! 👍

Great but sad review.....I really wanted a D sport, as my 14 Jeep Cherokee has reached its business deduction life. The Jeep has not had any problems over the 4 years and if I'm honest, I did expect to have issues with it, particularly with Jeep's reputation. The DS ticks all the boxes for size and capability. Kids are grown up and driving, so 7 seats are a waste, but we still need some load carrying space and some reasonable off road capability if we decide to do some soft bush trips. The DS was the perfect size and capability:(( Now I have no idea what to look at. Maybe the Forester will get that second look from me:) Any suggestions would be great guys:) I did like the Pug 3008 but is FWD only. Looking for a 5 seat SUV with enough fruit to feel special without costing a fortune. AWD minimum and bigger than a Tuscon , Cherokee, but smaller than the Santa FE. Don't want an Audi or BMW.
