New capability and equipment requires new power solutions 🔋
The 'Fitted For Energy' (FFE) project allows for energy to be harnessed from a running diesel engine and stored in low profile battery packs.

1:40 "kilowatt HOURS" is energy - which you're storing for later use. That energy is stored by the generator taking "kilowatts" of power from the engine while it's running. It enables silent running of accessories at the cost of greater (noisier, hotter, higher fuel consumption, greater weight) in advance of a stop? I don't see how it improves resupply - the same amount of fuel must be consumed, arguably more due to inefficiencies of store-and-return? I guess the future must be electrically-driven vehicles (like Nissan e-Power) with effort spent on optimising the generator side so it's ever more efficient.
@thetruthhurts7675
@thetruthhurts7675 Ай бұрын
That is why the world is turning away from E power cars, they cost way more to run, costs to infrastructure are enourmous, and they are as you point out inefficient. Hydrogen power is the way forward.
@trs4u
@trs4u Ай бұрын
@@thetruthhurts7675 Do you mean Nissan's e-Power system, or are you referring to pure Battery Electric Vehicles? Other than small drones I wonder if we'll ever see a pure BEV at war. The e-Power drivetrain is electric motors, regen, and a battery (giving you that silent option), but the energy source is a petrol motor. The ability to run around with a vast amount of easy-to-transfer energy in a jerry can is hard even to imagine how to beat.
@thetruthhurts7675
@thetruthhurts7675 Ай бұрын
@@trs4u It is easy to beat a battery powered car, areasonably sized electronic pulse and it is done. Hydrogen on the other hand is virtually limitless power, though converting anything to electric is a total waste of energy. Typically a car engine, or any other burning fuel is 38% efficient, thus a third of the potential energy from a litre of fuel will be converted into electric power. A TOTAL waste of thermal energy. Immagine the size of the vehicle needed to keep all those computers we saw running for 72 hours. This is a back step in logistics.
@trs4u
@trs4u Ай бұрын
@@thetruthhurts7675 You know most 'hydrogen' cars are electric vehicles, right? They're "Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles" - A hydrogen fuel cell that produces electricity to drive electric motors. They're no more immune to EMP weapons than any other tech. When I said "hard to beat" I was referring to being able to carry hydrocarbon energy around in buckets/bags/bottles/cans. Every other system is much more complicated on the supply side.
@thetruthhurts7675
@thetruthhurts7675 Ай бұрын
@@trs4u Are they truthfully? All vehicles are electric, but using electicity when we can take all electricity out on a battlefield is stupid to say the least.

Could it be possible to use a bike to get power for a tank engine, cause then it could be magnetic and draw in enemy fire which is beneficial because... And if it moves fast enough it would be possible to clear a whole entire front of any threats leaving people behind obviously

The maths and calcs don't add up for me. Vehicle engine, using the accessory belt, creates enough energy to power a UK household for a day and doesn't use any more fuel than usual. That gives the vehicle 72hrs of capability? Maybe 72hrs of radio but clearly not of propulsion. Hybrid cars with far bigger batteries and far lower vehicle weights get 30km in good weather. Sorry but something is off there. The "e machine" is just an alternator. Great marketing.

@@johnpixie I expect it's this too. It sounds just like an FFR landrover fit out. Second alternator charing a set of batteries when on the move so you don't need to fire up a gene when you stop. Connecting that to a small motor to move the vehicle makes sense but it's far from a new concept and won't get you far in anything but a tarmac road.

The theory is commendable but we have to look at history of generation of electricity from military vehicle engines. What has been found time after time is you overload these engines and end up with unreliability. It happened with the Jaguar engine where there were too many peripherals for the capacity of the engine. The military must stop trying to add accessories to the prime mover unit as originally conceived. First calculate your electrical load as required at maximum today. Now double it then add the prime transport power required. These were lessons known to REME well over 50 years ago. We did a standard test under electrical training. We put an 18 inch crank on a 12 v generator from a car and excited the field. The best ability anybody ever managed was 7v field excitation. That proved the massive engine loads these huge generators exerted. Maybe some of these designers should try the same test. I suspect that the reliability of the Rover engine will decrease as the electrical generation system increases. It is not rocket science it was being taught ove4 fifty years ago.

Son: What did you do during the war dad? Dad: I served with Experimentation and Trials Group son. It was great until someone with GCSE Physics pointed out that the energy conversion efficiency is defined as the useful energy output (benefit) divided by energy input (cost) and we realised we were actually creating an energy and logistics deficit - never mind the time and effort wasted. But God bless the taxpayer son!

yeah brilliant until you go to a cold environments & you see EV voltage depleting, performance, range all reduced.... lets also see the testing of this in a off road arena, where by more power is required.... again ALL EV, silent, covert, stealthy that's were the issues will be highlighted & yes, that's where EV vehicles have all failed to date!! aka cold weather, environments etc light off-road capabilities for vehicles converted, ALL get massively hindered that's why in current abilities/technology EV is stalling (even road vehicles its going backwards) off-road stealth, silence etc brillliant for the military goals, arena.. then you've massive weights involved, reduced payloads (reduces capabilities) as mentioned this all hinders off-road travel, then add to the mix cold weather & it gets even worse, mix to that incredibly poor ground conditions &you've a nightmare ie ICE engines come to play, you've then got more weight to deal with you your still struggling &with all the other negative effects....... overall "not good" ... I see yet anothr light skinned vehicle, in a combat arena disaster coming up
