Something for your memory bank the fuel pumps (mechanical and electric) are designed to stop pumping when the needle and seat closes by way of pressure overide. In the case of the mechanical pump the fuel pressure overcomes the spring pressure of the diaphragm and the pump stops pumping until the fuel in the carburettor drops and the needle opens this drops the fuel line pressure and the spring forces the lever down onto the cam and the process starts again same with the electric the fuel pressure becomes higher then the internal diaphragm spring which then opens a set of points stopping the motor/ pump when the pressure drops the spring pressure overcomes the fuel pressure and closes the points starting the motor/pump again. I also did my apprenticeship on old cars tractors etc and still enjoy playing with them currently doing up a Seris 3 Stage 1 and next will be a Series 3 1973 ute. I enjoy your videos keep them coming. Gippy

Not quite right , the cam follower on the pump has a split linkage that will stop over pressure and if the diaphram splits other than runnng out of power you will have a sump full of fuel . it does not matter if it is a rubber or cork gasket in the sediment bowl the more you take it off the more problem you will have they are designed for 5000 miles service more if severe conditions but not daily and a inline plastic filter will cure the dirt problem , leave the glass for water . If there is alot of water dose the tank with a litre or so of metho it will asorb the water and just burn away as long as the tank is not full of water that is . Personally i prefer the low. Volume low pressure elect pumps the run for years , cheaper thn a mech pump and you will always have fuel where you need it . If you can fit a CAV style filter it will solve 90% of fuel problems . Cheers

If you want any info on the older stuff more than happy to share information, i did my apprenticeship on plugs and points cars and trucks back in the early 70s . I think a lot of that information has been lost in the mists of time and tech improvement. I have seen huge changes in the last 40 odd years and personality i prefer old simple tech over computer tech . With the old stuff you can always get it going unless there is a catastrophic failure , the new stuff just needs a 20c sensor to fail and a multi million $ machine can be stopped for weeks just waiting for parts same for light vehicles. You are doing a great job otherwise and do enjoy all your postings. Cheers Pete

pete ryan Thank you very much for your comment and input on this video. I may have not made it clear in this video, though in the term of “Back and Beyond” I am referring remote regions. In my recent experiences I’ve come across some very poor quality fuel and removing the sediment bowl regularly and removing the excessive water, dust or rust is the only way to keep your fuel system clean. In areas where good clean fuel is available, I very much agree with you that emptying the sediment bow every 5,000 miles is spot on in areas of clean fuel. I’ve also found that when traveling in areas of extreme corrugation, the rubber o- ring does not perform as well as the cork gasket- as you know the cork absorbs the fuel and expands and improves the seal. The rubber O ring is much denser, doesn’t have these qualities and tends to lets air in to your fuel system in these extreme conditions, even if it is lined up and the brass clap is nice and tight. As for the in line fuel filter I have found that yes, they are a good modification to make to your fuel system (though this was not in the scope of this video), and yes I do use them in Series 3 fuel system, though they should not be solely relied on (always prepare for failure). With dirty fuel and remote tracks I have had inline filters become clogged after 80 km (using a further 6 over the next 800km), so using the sediment bowl as first or secondary filter was critical (in my experience). As you mentioned a CAV style filter would by the best solution, though it would have to suitable for a low pressure fuel system. In regards to comparing mechanical and electric fuel pumps, I believe you have stumbled across a very interesting subject area and we would be interested to hear more of your views on this subject. Though the electric aftermarket low pressure fuel pump is an alternative to the standard mechanical fuel pump, I would disagree as I found them a pain to deal with when the vehicle runs out of fuel and there is no way to overhaul the pump (which yes you can carry another fuel pump too). You also lose the use of the sediment bowl and have to rely purely on the small inline filter, if you have not fitted CAV style fuel filter. You’ve mentioned the loss of mechanical skills and information in the last 40 odd years in the wake of digital age and I couldn’t agree with you more. It should be very much the goal for all of us to endeavour to keep these skills and methods alive. Thanks again for taking the time to comment, we appreciate hearing about your own knowledge and experience on this.

I feel your pain with dirty fuel , the shortest life i have had out of filters was about a hour on a old gardner gen set from a drum of dirty fuel way out bush . Now to fuel pumps elect vrs mech , i have been running igram pumps for years not the cheap China ones this is were you cant scrimp on quality. The reliability is very good have put them on machines and changed them at around the 5000 hour mark even though they were still working fine plus they make bleeding so much easier on diesal motors no wearing out your hands on priming pump levers drawing fuel for over 3 meters a teaspoon full at a time . You can still use the sediment trap in the mech pumps you either cut off or remove half the cam lever , pull the valves out or put a screwdriver through them so there is flow . The choice to put the elect pump is at your discretion personally on a diesal i put it before the filter but after the sediment trap simply for bleeding ease , on petrol i put them after the filters . As i travel remote solo i belive in redundancy so i carry a spare elect pump which I also use for fuel transfer from jerrycans to my tank , a spare 120amp relay to replace my VSR if it fails , gotta keep the fridge going to keep the bacon fresh . These things dont take up much room but can and do have more than one use . Even the jerrycan i carry on the back of my D1 has 2 uses , carry extra water and with it on the back it gets warm to hot just right for a shower at the end of the day . To me the secret to overland travel is keep it as simple and as comfortable as possible while keeping the weight down . Even my camper trailer is light about 600kg loaded well within the off road towing weight recommended by Land Rover of 750kg max weight towing off road . Depending on were i go it is either swag or camper trailer depending on terrain. . Cheers Pete

I'm wondering, that system seems to be really reliable, why do so many people fit electric fuel pumps? Does it take longer to stake with the mechanical pump? Side note: Your website link says it's unsecure (in fact, not the link, instead my browser says it has ssl issues) Thanks for the great content!
