Brilliant video, just did this repair as described. Didn't have to jack the car drove front wheels up onto a curb, plenty of access from below. Head torch helped a lot. Struggled with that top nut but managed it eventually with the tools described (mine took a 15mm socket with 6inch extension bar). Replaced it as well when refitting the starter, though I only finger tightened. The contacts and plunger refurb kit worked a treat and was simple to fit. Real sense of achievement. Thank you so much..

excellent instructional video. just started to get the click click click on mine. looks like the hardest part will be removing the starter unit from the engine. thanks

Thanks for the info in the video - took me all of 5 minutes to get the starter off and the new one in place on the drive, not jacked up at all. took 2 minutes to the 2 bolts at the front of the unit but 45 minutes to even get the nut on the stud on the rear. Eventually used an inspection camera and the nut in a 15mm socket held in with grease on an extension bar and hey presto! job done. Its not hard at all, just fiddly and I'd recommend you have a go before forking out for a garage to do the job. Well done and thanks again for the video

Some Hints! * The top Nut should be removed with a 3/8” or 1/4” drive in a 15mm socket. A 1/2” drive doesn’t fit well and will give problems. * Do not put Jack Stands on the Axle as it reduces the space to work, and remove the starter. Place them on the chassis and allow the front axle and diff to drop. This give more room

didn't niel say it was a 17mm at the top?

@@jgbdickcleland he was wrong and a 100mm extension is too short as the ratchet fouls on the starter motor

@@jgbdickclelandsome of them are. Mines is a 17mm also in a 2003 TD5 Defender. The main thing about the socket used for that top nut is to make sure that it is a shallow socket. A longer socket catches a lip on the starter and causes it to bind up. I found the ideal thing to use was two short 3/8” drive extensions with the one connected to the socket being a wobble extension and attached a knuckle to the second short extension. Can be fed in to place from above by reaching below the inlet manifold then for actually loosening the nut is best done from below until loose then back to the top until out. I wasted alot of time initially with 1/2” drive sockets and extensions which were of no use.

Brilliant little kit I have an disco 2 2003 yes the nut at the back I’d a proper sw$¥§in to get to at, it did help removing the oil cooling pipe 15mm socket was needed with a six inch extension to access the nut reinstalling the nut I and use a magnetic pencil touch on the end helped seating the nut into place, after everything placed back in its rightful place vroom instant start cheers mate 😀👍

Thank you for this informative video, however the "OK for another 100k" on the Fourby website seems optimistic. My disco has done 69,250 miles since new in 2004. The original starter motor failed completely at the end of 2010 after 37,250 miles when it must have stuck and blew a fuse. The solenoid problem suddenly appeared two days ago with no warning. I have ordered a new starter motor plus a solenoid service kit from England as I now live in mainland Europe and there are no local suppliers of such bits. I will get my garage to change the starter motor and I will then refurb the solenoid on the old one at my leisure. I can keep the whole unit to one side as a spare. I have not closely examined the Disco starter motor when underneath on rust prevention duties. I expected it to be much larger. I am sure my old Ford Anglia van had a much bigger motor to spin a tiny 997 cc engine, though it did not have a solenoid, the starter pinion was whizzed down a spiral groove on the motor shaft and returned by a spring.

I got to say that is a very odd design of starter motor. Nice to see one can repair it to a certain extent. I find it odd on the rear of the starter where the Bendix shaft is. Usually, there is a support bracket and bearing for the shaft. Good video BTW>

Thanx, Today tried starting and just a slight clicking sound (the ignition lights didn't dim either when the key was turned) So i suspect it could be this solenoid causing it. Have had the starter redone twice before and now at 350,000Km looks like it needs redoing again. Will try it myself this time if I can locate the kit Just hope it is this thats causing the problem and not something else. Again thanx easy to follow video

when you put the starter motor back on are there any gaskets or seals between the starter motor and the engine got my starter motor fixed about 1 year ago at a garage and am getting the click again thought i might try and fix it myself as i like to go four wheel driving by myself and if the starter craps out would save a lot of walking if i can fix it

Hi. I’ve had a TD5 for about a year now and having no previous mechanics skills im learning lots. Been rebuilding bits especially over past month so it’s been stood around that time but today came to turn it over and nothing just that little click. What I’m wondering is if this is easy enough for an amateur to do or would it be best to buy a new starter motor and just bang that on? Thanks

Matthew Smith the hardest part is getting the starter off and back on because of that one blind fixing. Repairing the solenoid is easy
@thehrschannel4784
@thehrschannel4784 6 жыл бұрын
Fourby the blind fixing if I’m right from the video is not a bolt is it but a stud so as long as I can feel it we should be ok lol... here’s to hoping anyway... anyway will look at getting the solenoid kit ASAP 90% sure that’s what’s wrong

It took me a while to work out why a 17mm spanner was not working on the nut on the top of the starter motor. The auto Td5 uses a 15mm nut and not a 17mm as indicated in your video. For some reason they use a different nut on the manual.

Neil, does the 300Tdi starter motor have the same type of contacts? I've never taken down my starter and it's running for 19 years.

I’ve recently installed the new solenoid after the old one was pretty worn, but still nothing but a single click, any further suggestions what could be causing it to not start at all?
@davidhuett3579

Check the continuity of the thin wire that connects to the starter solenoid. If the spade connector is a loose fit, it can be an issue. Then follow that thin wire backwards to see if there has been any damage to it .. all the way back to its connection at the fuse box in the engine area. Check the associated fuse for firm fitting and also check associated starter relay (I think its R102) Wiring goes from here to the passenger fuse box (fuse 23 I think) then to the ignition starter switch itself.

I figured out where the starter was, removed it and found that the cable lying on the outside was broken and filled with dirt/oil/ asphal etc. I just bought a new starter... pretty quick job actually

Air con drain?
@alanjones4622
@alanjones4622 6 жыл бұрын
Could it be the air-con drain? When I first got my disco I was concerned about a water leak until I found out about air-con drainage. In summer there can be quite a pond under the car after I have parked on level tarmac for a while where the water is obvious.
