The first recorded end-to-end walk (actually from John o' Groats to Land's End) was undertaken by the brothers John and Robert Naylor in 1871. Since then the walk has been undertaken many times, more particularly since 1960, after a well-publicised road walk by Dr Barbara Moore. In 1960 the entrepreneur Billy Butlin organised a road walking race, which gave further impetus to the idea.
Since the 1960's, walkers have mostly chosen off-road routes, using the growing network of long-distance footpaths. A classic account is from 1966 by the travel writer John Hillaby. Off-road walkers usually complete the journey in two to three months. There is a considerable choice of off-road routes, but all are much longer than the shortest road distance, usually 1,200 miles (1,900 km) or more. The walk is still undertaken by road walkers, often doing the walk, like Sir Ian Botham, for charity, or as a "challenge walk". They typically take a month or even less.
Some walkers aim to complete the route piecemeal, perhaps over several years, to achieve the walk within the time constraints of a working life and before the possible health problems of retirement.

Hi Gary How's things. I have to say I am super impressed with your setup and kit choice. I just can't go lightweight even on a day walk lol. Have you tried a walk with the pack on with the kit to see how it sits. We are getting hit with snow and ice at present so fingers crossed when April comes it will be dry and warm. It is getting so close and you must be getting excited. Honestly though that is no weight at all so you must be super organised so hats off. Keep us updated as you get prepared and ready for your 'wee' plod lol lol. Look after yourself sir 😁👍🏔️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⛰️⛺🏆📸🍻

Hi Scott, I'm fine thanks. As I'm getting on a bit, I have to find ways of keeping the weight down so I can manage to carry it day after day. I can't see me getting it much lighter though, there comes a point when you start to sacrifice safety and comfort just to lose a few more grams. I have tried the rucksack loaded with my gear and it's one of the most comfortable I've owned. I will do an update video on it when I get back from the hike. I just need that weather to sort itself out now. 👍😁 ATB
