Sadly the salmon never came close to the 100,000 return. Last year it was just below 20,000.

Very few compared to in this video. All Newfoundland rivers , along with the rest of the maritime rivers and Quebec have very low return numbers nowadays, with Nova Scotia rivers having fared the worst.

Dave Thomas I hate to hear that, I dream of a day when folks will figure it out and the large numbers of giant salmon will be back...but it doesn’t look good. It’s just as bad in the West, especially with steelhead rivers. It’s interesting, they always put the restrictions on anglers and I’m all for it but then do nothing to slow overfishing from commercial activity...then to make it worse they allow absolute destruction of the once great rivers from mining, ranches and other resource extraction...usually by foreign owned companies! Don’t even get me started on poachers!!

It peaked in 2011 with 45 000 salmon. Most rivers in Newfoundland have healthy runs of salmon
