Great video mate, thanks for sharing. while I have done many a front end rebuild and bearing re-packs, I certainly learnt a few things from you. I support your thoughts on excess grease in the hub cavity, every re-pack I have ever done is exactly the same- perfectly good grease just sitting there. I'll be suing it as a water resistance mechanism from here on.

As an older tech I have done a million tapered sets in all kinds of vehicle. I also own and have owned many Land Cruisers. I have never seen the inner nut torque at 59 nm. I know the outer is around that, but 45 ft lbs on a tapered bearing seems very high. The only tapered bearings I've seen with that kind of torque are sets the use a shim stack for preload. Do you have a link to the toyota service info that specifies this? Maybe I have been doing it wrong for decades.

I think you'll find that if the void between the bearings is not full of grease, grease within the bearings can migrate out of the bearings into the empty void. being full stops the grease from migrating. at least that's my experience on industrial equipment with a similar design. excellent video BTW, I'll be using it when I do my bearings soon on my 79 series

Gday Bonza, thanks for the comment. Toyota’s procedure says to put grease in the void but I have never seen that grease fo anything but just sit there for the service interval. Some grease there is ok but yes too much is of no real good use. Cheers

Thanks Adam. That was a great straight forward explanation. I have been researching different options for doing this job a including the spindle greaser. How long have you been using it and when you pull it down to maintain the cv, what is the condition of the bush and is it full of grease. Keep up the good work.

@@sharpetoolingaustralia114 Yes thank you I have watched all your Landcruiser vids and your tools look great. I am reconditioning my 80s front axle with new CVs, bearings & seals. I will have greaseable CVs and will get one of your tools for greasing the bush and all should be good. I will have to post on the numerous Landcruiser FB sights I am on. I will also get a set of 3xfiner for when I maintain the rear axle.

hey do you still see no issues with running nulon extreme grease for bearings & CV's etc im just trying to simplify things and only carry one type of grease? ive got RCV 300m axles & CVs in my 105 just dobnt know if i should be running moly grease in CV, ive just bought your spindle greaser and would prefer just using nulon extreme for everything in the hub.

Love the video, very descriptive. Curious on this too, I’m new to it so I could be wrong but when I read the manual, I’ll paste below, it sounds to me like it should be right at aprox 5nm “ 22 Install the wheel bearing adjusting nut and adjust the bearing preload as follows: A. Tighten the adjusting nut to 59 Nm, rotate the hub several times in each direction and then loosen the adjusting nut until the nut can be turned by hand. B. Repeat step a. C. Tighten the hub nut to a torque of 5.4 Nm. D. Install a spring gauge to one of the wheel studs and measure the effort required to start turning the hub, the effort required to start turning the hub. The effort should be between 26 - 52 N. If necessary, rotate the adjusting nut until the turning effort is as specified. “ What are your thoughts on that?

Also when greasing spindle with your greaser, shouldn't you use the same great as is inside of your knuckle which probably would be molygrease? By using that wheel bearing grease you are mixing 2 together. Just asking.
@sharpetoolingaustralia114
@sharpetoolingaustralia114 2 жыл бұрын
Gday Onrej. Mate I couldn’t agree more! That is why I use and recommend INOX MX8 PTFE grease. It covers all the greasing needed for a 4x4 and yes I use it inside the CV too as recommended by the supplier. No more mixing of grease types!

True but my bearings are always perfect when I repack them, never come loose and the temps remain low I use a laser temperature gun and have checked them on hot day’s running across the Nullarbor and they are sweet. Set your preload to you own liking mate!
