Modern municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill facilities are generally designed with a barrier system involving a composite liner system, which are used in combination with final cover systems to form the waste containment. The base liner system includes one or more geomembrane (commonly high density polyethylene, HDPE) layers overlying a compacted clay liner or geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) and a leachate collection system. A landfill final capping system employing an HDPE/LLDPE geomembrane overlying compacted low permeability clay soil or geosynthetic clay liners (GCL) is commonly used when infiltration to the waste mass must be held to an absolute minimum and to ensure a more effective control to liquid and gas transport.

They are the lucky few. A large majority live in camps, some of which have existed for decades. The world’s largest, Dadaab, in Kenya is full of Somalis who fled the endless civil war there. Guled came to the camp in 2010, aged 16, after a terrifying journey of hundreds of miles, in flight from the extremist group al-Shabaab. He was born in Mogadishu at about the time two American military Black Hawk helicopters were shot down among the tightly packed houses of the Wardighley district of the city. Jubilant crowds had dragged the bodies of several US Army soldiers through the streets. The US and UN withdrew and the world washed its hands of the country. During Guled’s childhood, Mogadishu’s beautiful boulevards, its grand mosques and cathedrals, its ancient Omani, Portuguese and Italian waterfront and sparkling white villas had been reduced to rubble thrice over. They survived on the little money his elder sister made from selling biscuits, cakes and sweets, and, when she could get it, petrol. We have a landfill that has gone out of control in the UK, very high levels of toxic H2S are covering hundreds of square miles, we know the base has lots of gypsum from the previous operator, plasterboard might have something to do with it but they changed the use and domestic waste now goes on top of this and we think this might of been the mistake, any ideas?
