Where the heck are you getting your information from? Because you have no idea what you are saying. It's not correct. Smoothness of the landing is from how soft you touchdown, common sense. And that can depend on many factors. It all starts with the approach. A good approach leads to a good landing. The length of roll out clearly depends on how heavy the aircraft is, and how much braking force is used. And most importantly, always maintain the center line.

The goal in landing is to put the aircraft on the runway. It really doesn't matter how you do it. Just as long as it's safe, and with procedure. There are no second priorities of smoothness. It's one single objective, land safely. Runway 27R at EGLL is ~12,800ft long. Thats roughly 2 miles. That is plenty of space to land any aircraft. Braking force really isn't a factor, there is more than enough. Just get lost. You have no idea what you are talking about. I don't need for you to explain anything because 100% of what you are typing here is bullshit. Do you think you could explain a proper circle to land procedure? I doubt it. Do you think you can tell me what an ADF is used for? I doubt that too. How about a question for a Private Pilot's level: In what flight condition is torque effect the greatest in a single-engine airplane?

Yes smooth touchdown, but too long in the flare. The wheels need to be on the ground sooner so that the plane can be slowed sufficiently to take the high speed turn off to the right. If we missed that turn off, we would have had to taxi nearly a mile further on which wastes valuable time. The reason is that while the runway is occupied by a plane that missed the turnoff point, the runway cannot be used by the planes waiting to take off. This was the reason captain took control early so that he could apply full reverse thrust and increase wheel braking. The priority is always to touch down at the correct point and speed; a smooth touch down is a secondary issue. Delaying touchdown while floating to get a smooth landing is bad technique. www.captaincyril.biz

Not the exit on the left, it was on the right to get to the parking stand at Terminal 4. The 09R runway was the take off runway in use, hence the importance of vacating as soon as practicable. www.captaincyril.biz

Yes it is a B777-300ER of Jet Airways registration VT-JEB on 24th April 2010. The flight was special as it was the second of two from Delhi that day. We were 15 minutes apart and had every seat filled with passengers who had been stuck in Delhi for several days because of the volcanic ash. www.captaincyril.biz

Heathrow is trying to campaign for the end of the Cranford Agreement which proves that having a Runway swap as they do at 3pm on days with westerly winds would reduce noise.

I'd like to understand this Cranford agreement - does it basically mean that north/south alternation is not enforced when the airport is on easterly ops?

Ah, ok - I've just read up about it, understand now. It looks as though the airport is applying for planning permission to modify the taxiways to allow alternation. This means they think it won't be in place until 2022 at the earliest, which seems a long time to wait. A very bizarre state of affairs - it seems odd to protect one village from noise, at the expense of residents of Hounslow and other areas! The only saving grace is that they're only on easterlies roughly 25% of the year.
