Nice work, first time fabulous 👌 it gets easier as you go , that was a good challenge to put on video for the diy guys and gals at home for a confidence building thing , it's a rewarding skill welding and fabricating you won't regret learning this at all ,good luck and good health 🍺😀

Thanks Gary, appreciate that. 😊 I think metal work is on of my favorite things to do in the garage, something special about making things out of plane metal. I love the fact that I now can fix almost everything on the car my self. I have still much to learn but it part of the fun. I can't count the number of welding videos I saw before I did my first weld. 😊 Next thing is to fix the rear cross member, a bigger job and a more serious welding job. Need to do my homework before that one. Thanks for the support and hope you and yours are safe! Best, Simon

Thank you for making this video! I just bought a very rusty '85 Land Rover 110 Defender with the same door rust problem. I do want to make a suggestion! YOU MAY MAKE A PAPER or CARDBOARD STENCIL of the Rusted Out area and then use your Stencil to lay on top of the 22 gauge metal sheet that you have. I took a class in Metal Shop in 7th grade and learned how to make metal boxes and how to spot weld and how to use a drill press and other metal cutting tools. I recently bought a Mig welder and cannot wait to dig into the process of fixing up all my rusty cars. Thank you again and best of Luck with your ROVER.

Hey and congrats with the “new” car 👍😊 I know, I got some tips about that later and have seen some videos where they do that and that’s a great tip for other going ahead with welding sheet metal. 👌 Sadly I sold the Defender, was getting so rusty that it was getting a bit more than my skill could handle. Sold it to a guy in the Land Rover club who has fixed it up nicely. 👍 Thank you for sharing and I’m very glad you liked the video. 😊 Welding is very fun and I will do it more this winter to make stuff for my Discovery 3 build. Wish you good luck with your project. 👍

Great video, nice to see how you turn rust into shiny metal again :-D since my Range Rover classic, i know how hard it is to bend the metal in the right shape that it fits good. Well done.

Thank you Daniel! :) This was on of my most rewarding fixes on the Defender. Something special about fixing it from just a sheet of metal. I have much to learn about fabrication and beding metal, but I can't wait to do some more welding. Was there a lot of things needed welding on the RRC? I have seen some videos of them and read forums, some are pretty bad. 😊

@@LandRoverDrive Yes, a lot of. The chassis was in a perfect condition but the body had a lot of rust. I welded both front foot floor and both fenders, after that I thought was finish, but the rear end of the body was also bad, trunk floor and the rear fenders, this was the point where I gave up and sold it. 🙄 But years later a want a RRC V8 what an awesome car, but rust free and in good condition you have to pay 20000 € at least. 😀

Using clamps setting the new metal place onto the door, will make it easier and free both your hands for measurement and general fitting. Another idea, could be using a metal grinder to cut out the new piece of metal, so the edges dont get so bend compared to using the metal scissor. Just some ideas, im not telling what too do, as you are doing great. :-) Well done :-)

Thanks for the tips, I'm learning a lot as I'm doing this and advice and shared experiences is what I'm going on. I saw some magnet holders that I will try out next time. I have bought some extra metal clamps since this video was filmed so have some extra now. I thinking of getting a metal cutter of some kind, but I will test out the grinder next time. 😊 Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching! Best, Simon

took all my doors of as they needed repairing and strengthening(it cracks where the door locking switch sits). got them shot blasted and galvanised.Depending on the condition of the door skins, you can re use them or get the galvanised door skins.I prefer the strength of the galvanised ones as they keep the doors together a lot better.

Yeah, would have like to have change them all out at that point. So rusted all around. I needed to get them fixed enough so I could get the car though MOT as we had a trip coming up. And I also wanted to learn how to weld and do metal work. Great way to start but still need to work on my welding skills. I wish I had access to all of the gear need to do a full restore as getting the work done by others a so expensive here in Norway. Good tip about the galvenised ones. I was told that it smart to get them waxed internaly as well before painting them. The welds still holds on the Defender so not the worst first job. 🙂 Cheers.

Thanks a lot! I was hoping it would inspire others to just start. I was reluctant to start on this job but then one day I figured that the only way I would learn was to just do it. 😊 And learning is part of the fun of Land Rover ownership. 😅 I’m no expert but if you have Emanuel questions just ask. 👍

:) Utrulig tilfredstillende å sveise inn nytt metal. ;)

Well done. I have the same to do in my TD5 90 some time in the future. I am also a beginner in these things but you are already way ahead of me. Did you MIG weld the door frame, or was it stick welding?
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 😊 I just watch a lot of welding videos and did some practice welding. You can see some of them in kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftKbktyfp7u8qps.html. I used MIG welding with gas, I learned after all the videos that MIG was the best for car restoration. MIG is a lot cleaner than stick, and handles impurities better than TIG. 😊 Just get started welding, that's my biggest tip. It's fun an so rewarding. If you have any more questions just ask, I'm not a pro but know some stuff.

Hey, jo det finnes rammer som du kan kjøpe ferdig også "reskin" den nye ramma med den gamle aluen. Jeg ville lære meg å sveise og fant ut at dette var tidspunktet for å starte. 👍🙂

Check out Brittanica Restorations you tube channel. He's an English guy (Mike) living in Canada and he does all sorts of Land Rover repairs. He has just done a footwell replacement in which he shows how to make and use templates when doing metal fabrication and bending sheet metal. Im sure watching Mikes videos will help you a lot. I would say he is the best you tuber for Land Rover do it yourselfers there is. Please do yourself favour and have a look. All the Best and stay safe.
