During the first half of summer, the lavender fields of Provence in France blooms. This attracts thousands of photographers from all over the world. While the lavenders bloom Landscape photography blooms too with beautiful vivid colors on the social media. In this video, I show some of the most popular places to photograph the lavenders. This video is also a guide for tourists and other travelers on where to find the lavenders. Most of the flowers are located around the town of Valensole.

just back from Valensole Mads. Went partly as a result of this video. Shot quite a bit of time lapse while I was there, but in post I`ve discovered that the daytime ones are ruined by the bees in the field. But once the sun had set, they all went to bed and the ones shot at dusk are ok. Lots of Japanese tourists too; cool to film them wandering the sunflower/lavender fields. There`s a place where you can shoot both colours together. Not often one can shoot oriental people wandering yellow/purple fields. It`s funny what you come back with is not always what you went to a place for.

Great videos. They are short and to the point. You don't bore us with 10 minutes of driving video while talking about weather and family. And you always have a map showing where you are photographing which helps immensely when we plan our trips. I used your Iceland videos for my trip last month and it was a success. Thank you.

Hello Mads, I am lucky enough to live in Provence close to Gordes. I am obsessed by lavender and like you am a keen photographer. I spend hours in these fields every year. I have watched, with interest, a number of videos about photography in the lavender fields and I have to compliment you on your video. It is by far the clearest and the most visually appealing of those I've seen. It's not too long and full of comments which are irrelevant (too many people like the sound of their own voice) and you clearly show your camera settings and are open about the location where you shot your photos. So bravo for your narrative and inspiring photos. I would like to tell you a bit about the Abbaye de Senanque near Gordes. The reason you saw poor lavender is that yes you were a little early for those fields but more so because a few years ago all the lavender was removed, the fields were left fallow for two years and then young lavender planted. It has never grown back to the standard it was previously. We've had a couple of summer droughts and I think the young lavender suffered. Plus these fields are now fenced, whereas before we could walk into them without problems. Inconsiderate tourists used to pick the plants and walk on the flowers so the monks have now turned this area into a 'hard to access' region, even to the extent of putting up signs saying they will call the police if they find you in their fields. Shame this has happened as it has now spoilt it for those of us who live here as well as future tourists. Secondly I would just like to comment on the bees. I have been doing tours into the lavender for 4 years now and have only had one person stung (she had used honey-based hair conditioner!) during this time. You can safely walk right into the fields, among the rows, and the bees will totally ignore you. They are far too busy collecting their pollen to worry about people passing by. Naturally one should be aware that bees sting but it is so unlikely you will get stung, so please don't let that put you off walking amongst the flowers and enjoying their perfume and more so listening to that loud buzz from our wonderful bees!

I absolutely love your work and your shots of lavender fields in Provence have one major characteristic in my view: they are poetic. They fully render that unique charm that we feel when in the area but that is so difficult to define. Your photography does that marvelously. Another great video Mads. I really appreciate the style and presentation of your videos. The photos are awe inspiring. With all the photographers wondering about the fields, do the farmers discourage photography? It wouldn't surprise me to hear that some photographers are less than respectful of their environment.
@MadsPeterIversen
@MadsPeterIversen 7 жыл бұрын
It wasn't what I experienced. They seem to not mind it and actually benefit from all the exposure. There are even signs by the side of the road warning about tourists and photographers. Most people are respectful, although some are clumsy when they jump from one row to another...

Just checked their facebook account from the place you mentioned and a global calendar. It is really a bit late now. I'll do that in June next year, and hopefully it will be less hot than now :). Just a side note, I watched your interview and it was really great, and I just wanted to tell you that I am +1 for a video on your postprocessing techniques. :). Anyway thanks for your videos ! Cheers, Jan

Hello Peter thanks for your great video, it’s very amazing and full of useful informations. On next weekend I’m going to visit lavander fields in Provence. For now I haven’t a zoom yet (like a 200mm) I think I’ll use a 24-105 Canon and a 16-35 canon both L, do you have any suggestion? Do you think this equipment would be a good choice? As for the milkyway I usually use a samyang 14 f2.8 but I think if I'll use it for the fields there will be too distorsion as for the perspective... don’t you think so?

Thanks Mads, enjoyed the video! How do the farmers feel about a bunch of photographers running around? Haven't seen anyone mention gaining permission on private property

Do you have to ask the owners of the field permission to shoot there? Is there an admission fee for some of the locations that let you get to parts of the fields that are not visible from the roadside?
@MadsPeterIversen
@MadsPeterIversen 6 жыл бұрын
For all, I know there's no admission fee and you don't need to ask. They're used to crazy photographers. Just respect the fields and don't cut the lavenders as I've seen some teens do.

I head you on Nick Page today and wanted to tune in and see your videos. I love this one as I visited the lavender fields in the summer of 2016 and agree that Valensole was the best. Thanks for putting these together as you have some venues from my bucket list that I will be viewing. As a side note, I found an amazing field with a small stone barn father down the road in Valensole. I will try and send it to you or you can check it out on my website www.davelongphoto.com. Thanks gain.

More outstanding images. I will say photographers need to respect the farmers fields, the crops whether wheat, canola, lavender, grape etc are their livelihood. So don’t trample them.

KGi4 : yo are right, but I guess this is an iconic place that new photographers will be glad to ad to their portfolio. They just have to try to be very creative. I am driving their this weekend. I doubt I will find an original angle to these views...

Have you seen the rest of my videos? That's what I mostly do - I go to places photographed a billion times ;) I really wanted to shoot the lavenders and I genuinely believe photographers "miss out", if they don't want to shoot in locations photographed a lot. There's a reason why these places are so popular :)
