Landscape Photography Shoot Snow At Malham Cove After Work, North Yorkshire, UK

After a quick trip to Burnley Football Club I ventured out to North Yorkshire in the UK for a Landscape Photography shoot at Malham Cove. A beautiful location, popular with landscape photographers since the birth of the camera. Formed 12000 years ago, the landscape was fashioned by a huge glacier in the last ice age. Erosion of the limestone has created an amazing vista.
The snow had fallen which changed the landscape to one of a wonderland and whilst the shoot was cold, it was a lovely day to get out.
The location has been used for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and other films in the past.
Using the Nikon camera I show the techniques needed to get the photographs needed for focus blending and exposure blending. The link to my focus blending tutorial/ walkthrough for Lightroom and photoshop is below.

Great video, a job well done. You certainly stole the colour from the sky, and took home a very red nose. I loved the tree photograph. I love trees. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Drax, glad you enjoyed it. I not Canadian but adore the country. Had happy times skiing there and the Canadian people are really friendly. Glad you dig the haircut and you are right it's not the best for summer but as it's falling out it doesn't make much difference these days! :D

Lovely images Paul... You are quite adept at using the available light to your advantage in these shots. No use of a cable release or timer, came out quite good! In ref. to the start of the video, I see you trimmed the burrs and you actually hold a real job! LOL... David Newbold's comment on what is the best tripod to use is a good question... I used a 3 section aluminum Benro for close to 8 years, lightweight but sturdy as all hell. When doing my lunar shots with it, I hung a small plastic bucket on it's center hook with 2) 5lb. dumbbells placed inside... 6 months back I decided to step up to what should be the last tripod I will ever need... The TR-424 by PMG ( ProMediaGear ), [retirement gift to myself...] Not sure if you ever had a chance to check out the link I left you... Great content here once again... Bill Farr... :-)

Paul G Johnson Well the images look great. I've got a lightweight Gitzo tripod and it's pretty solid but not quite as much as I'd like it to be. But I wanted to keep the weight down so of course it's a trade off.

@DavidMNewbold
@DavidMNewbold 7 жыл бұрын
Paul G Johnson I've been thinking about moving up to a slightly heavier tripod. Just need to find the right balance between weight when hiking and steadiness when shooting. It's hard because I tend to want to tote everything along and hate leaving things behind to lighten the load. I really need to minimize a bit more and make a more deliberate choice about what I carry and why on any given day.
@PaulGJohnsonphotography

The mountaineer I use isn't that heavy considering what it is (4 section) the thing that adds the weight is the ball head which is a lump!

Hi Paul, Great locations you find. How much planning and research on the locations do you do and have you got a bucket list of shoots for 2017 or do you just follow your nose... Regards Peter
@PaulGJohnsonphotography
@PaulGJohnsonphotography 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, photography is my release from a stressful job so I don't go overboard with planning and research. I am lucky that I live in a lovely part of the UK and shoots are accessible close by. If going on a shoot I'll check the weather and sun trajectory at the location but I don't pay much attention to the weather as there is always an opportunity (unless I am travelling a long distance). I do have areas of the UK that I want to shoot at which are further away from my locale and they include Scotland (going in 3 weeks), the Lakes (April) and Snowdonia (May). I'll research locations that look interesting but on the whole I shy away from popular spots for photographers as they can get rather busy. That being said a few shots I have planned in Scotland will be iconic landscapes (hopefully). I also like nothing more than following my nose. There is always a composition to be had whether it's good bad or indifferent it does not matter. If I've got a camera I'm happy :)
