My wife and I took a 2 week trip to New Zealand in late summer and was gobsmacked by its incredible beauty. We chose this period as it would've been decent weather and nearly off-peak prices. We cut through the mountains from Queenstown to Christchurch and passed through several lakes and towns including Wanaka, Tekapo and Pukaki. We tried several nights and mornings to see the aurora but were unfortunately unsuccessful with the bright moon and clouds.
On detailed inspection after getting home after seeing the Church of Good Shepherd, I noticed a slightly coloured glow on the horizon behind the moonlight. It was aurora! I call this a success, I guess?
Anyway I highly recommend travelling to South Island at least once in your life. Call it a pilgrimage, but it's definitely life changing and worth your time!
