Something for the Germans and Italians too. We'd greatly appreciate it for those fluent in both languages to give feedback on the VAs - we hired German and Italian VAs specifically for these characters! As for the second comic concerning the Landsknecht - we used "Kein Problem, Kumpel!" instead of the (we suspect to be google translated by the artist) "Nein problem, Freunde". Our German VA suggested that Kumpel is a bit more natural when used in a sentence when directly speaking to a person. You'd only use "Freunde" when you're talking about your friend. I hope I pronounced Landsknecht properly. Took me a while to get it right. - \[T]/ Solus

The conditerre were such loyal mercenaries that they became members of the government. Fun fact: All the conditerre knew each other. So more often than not they were signing peacy treaties between various italian city states. Just so they didn't inconvenience each other.

see, that wasn't an 100% guarantee. The White Company under John Hawkwood and the men of Urbino under Frederico da Montefeltro were both well known for turning down bribes when they started a contract. They did do some savvy business practices though. while working for Pisa Hawkwood basically used Florence trying to bribe him to squeeze more money out of Pisa once his contract expired (essentially "your 30 day trial has ended, pay up or I help those guys burn your house"), and Montefeltro took many contracts from city states to not participate in their wars because of his reputation.

Fun fact: She (Landsknecht) would have to be paid at least the double amount of a normal Landsknecht due to her using a „Zweihänder“ and therefore being considered a kind of elite shock trooper. I guess you really dont want to find want happens if you cant pay them.

@@judahboyd2107 I think you are reffering to the 189 man of the Swiss Guard (Schweizer Garde) who defended Rome and therefore also the pope against some 24000 mercs (including Landsknechte). However the swiss guard was seen as one of the absolut best forces for hire at the time (think of Little Space Marines of their Time XD) Fastest Source I could find: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sack_of_Rome_(1527)

@@HavercorLP Actually, the Swiss Guard were superseded by the Landsknechts. This is due to their earlier adoption of gunpowder tactics against the Swiss pike blobs, a sort of proto-Tercio that would come to dominate the battlefields. An example would be the Battle of Marignano, where landsknecht in combination with French artillery devastated the Swiss pike blocks.

As a German Landsknecht Reenactor, I hereby approve this in the name of my Rotte (smallest military group among Landsknechts, usually around 20 combatants, meaning about 40-50 people in the whole group, historically speaking)

The way of the Italian Condottiero revolved around some burocracy and very estimed clients as a result of that, basically all European high profile clients, royalty, imperial representatives, but also Italian city council member and such utilised the services of Italian fighters. The two most notable Italians I know of would be Condottiero Francesco Sforza and so called Braccio da Montone, they both started two separate rules of combat, it's also in part thanks to both that Italian combatants had high praises and performance, besides, you don't want to fuck with neither a Condottiero nor an Italian crossbowman. Nor Italian artillery

In geneal, a Landsknecht is a mercenary infantryman, armed with pike, arquebus, or zweihander. A Condottiere is the commander of a mercenary brigade/army, usually composed of at least some hundreds light cvalrymen, and that could include arquibusiers and man-at-arms also. The most renown condottieri (I.E. Bartolomeo d'Alviano) could be entrusted by a State of the direction of entire campaigns. Landsknechts could provide the base strenght of an army. The brigades of the condottieri had more flexibility of employ.

@@marseldagistani1989 not likely due to the fact they would lack any forms of near instant communications such as radios as well as the fact it would be without the ability to coordinate such a force over a large battlefield being unable to observe the entire thing in real time. Though this is just my educated observation so I may be missing something

I once had the interesting experience of meeting a landsknecht wearing a codpiece in the shape of the head of a cod. I personally thought the whole idea was rather fishy, but he explained that he did it simply for the halibut. Oh my cod, how I floundered in the face of such reason.

Italian mercenaries were so loyal to their clients that some became council or royalty members under their clients, they'd sometimes take contracts or make some purposely to avoid betraying friends or clients.

I wonder why most depictions in popular media associate them with greatswords. I know large swords were useful in open battlefields, but as uou said, pikes and muskets were far more common and practical. Perhaps it was done to make them more distinct?

@@BknMoonStudios as I understand, they'd act as a support for said pike formations by batting away enemy pikes and defending them from cavalry Bonus note: This is most likely why they're known for the premium they charged, as it was an extremely risky job considering the fact that pikes are typically the first to be sent out, and thus, first to die

@@PalindromicGaming I believe the term is doppelsoldner, as in double paid solder, because you'd had to be very skilled or very stupid to voluntarily charge pikemen, especially Swiss pikemen, try to knock their weapons aside or disable their weapon with your two handed sword, & attack the pikemen directly or with help from your buddies behind you.
