The real Landsknechte where expensive and feared mercenarys, they fought for many kings and used to be marauders and arsonists. They where good fighters to. They used to fight in tight formations with realy long Pikes, called "Spieße", mixed with some dudes with these extreme big swords, the "Zweihänder/Bidenhänder". They had the job to break enemy Pike lines. Later they use more and more men with arquebuses (?) (sorry i dont know how to call this word properly in english) and cannons.

Also sowas wie Leiharbeiter heute.

They would often hit the Pikes of the enemys and try to destroy them!
@tiringsarcasm

Essentially they would attempt to break the stalemate between pikes by doing what the reply above me mentioned. Landsknechte were used like elite shock troopers during the pike and shot era and were very expensive because of the skill needed to be one.

@@maxbayer5319 Have fun destroying those pikes, the shafts are quite thick and the wood very hard and you also don't hit against a piece of wood that's locked in place, so most of the energy will be wasted by just moving the pike a bit. Maybe they were used to push the pikes out of the way and once behind the deadly ends of the pikes they could directly attack those who are holding them. I also know of a type of fighter that was equiped with shields (rondaches) and one-handed swords, later often rapiers. They were specifically there to come close to pike formations and attack them in close quarter. Another possibility is that the greatswords were mostly used for bodyguards, who would be experienced vets and they were only used as a backup and their main purpose was to defend a space with wide swings as we see with Montante fighting techniques.

@GeneralMcCracker

@@georgetsaki9576 in battle the big two-handed swords would have been wielded by "Doppelsöldner" ("Double Mercenaries"), who were armored (helmets, breastplates, often other parts too). How they show it, it's Fighting with two-handed longswords (smaller than the swords for battle), which were mostly used in "civilian" attire, without armor - usually not in battle, but for self-defense, dueling etc.

Wow, they actually allowed women to join their ranks, and fight, too! An act unheard of at that time as soldiers were mainly male, such predispositions made landsknecht armies quite advanced for their time!
@mangalores-x_x

that's reenactment, however in fact it was normal for mercenaries to bring along their families on campaign. There are plenty of stories of their wives following them all over the place, one famous example shows a couple show up all over germany and northern italy and the wife dying in a battle of the 30 years war as the camp was overrun. Heck, there is even that famous bloke from the 1st crusade that conquered his own duchy. Why? Because his wife had all the titles and she died due to illness. Where? On that very crusade accompanying him. It were the professional armies of the 18th century that did away with that as instead of a soldier having to care for all his weapons and possessions (hence having his wife and children along to take care of his logistics and possessions was a good thing) the state provided for all of that.

You find in this period that there is suddenly room for egalitarianism when things get difficult - Sieges are usually a good example, if you are another mouth to feed you are expected to contribute to the war effort in some form regardless of sex.

"They thumbed their noses at the current "morals" of the day and got away with it because lords considered them so useful.Think of them as medieval hippies. Extremely violent, lethal medieval hippies." Best. Description. Ever!
@WordBearer86
@WordBearer86 7 жыл бұрын
I think of them more as a medieval punk movement, less like hippies (who were all for that whole world peace thing). One of the reasons why the Landsknecht wore those often garish and overly detailed outfits was to flaunt their wealth to the nobles. They were less about being against morality, and more about being against the established system of class hierarchy. After all you can make enough money to afford to wear something most nobles wouldn't dare to wear (or could not afford) so casually, and then wear that very same outfit into battle because you can always get another. You can buy everything the nobility has, you can dress like and you can act like nobility, so why then because of a circumstance of birth, are you not considered a nobleman by that point? Skepticism of the ruling establishment used to be a very German thing. Just look what they did to Arminius once he tried being a King.

A lot of forms actually start and finish with the point to the ground. Look at Godinho's rules for example. It's not like you're going to ruin a sword just by resting the tip on the ground. Those weapons were made for large cuts, not really for thrustnig anyway. Plus, you can always resharpen it without too much of a hastle.
