The Landyachtz Dinghy is commonly praised as one of the best mini-cruisers out there. But is it actually that good or just overhyped? That's what I cover in this video.

Now that I’ve been riding this board for a while, I have a solid idea of who I think it’s best for.
If you’re looking for a high-quality mini-cruiser and your budget ranges from about 140-180ish, you should definitely consider it. And here’s why - the deck shape, hardware, bearings, wheels - well just about every component that makes up this board is the definition of quality.
Bro, this is literally sounding like an advertisement right now, but I promise you it’s not. I’ve never talked to Landyachtz in my life, although if anyone at Landyachtz is reading this, I’d be stoked to work with you guys - just putting that out there (billy@shredshack.com).
I’ve also seen many people ask if it’s a good beginner board and my answer to that is… well it can be. Let me clarify…
The more inexperienced you are, the better off you’ll be with a larger board. And that makes sense, right? The more deck space, the more room you’ll have to put your feet and the easier it’ll be to balance.
Since these boards are mini-cruisers, then you might want to consider something longer. I’d recommend spending a little more for the Tugboat series, which is basically the same concept as the dinghy, just scaled bigger.

Hey guys, just to clarify - this is the Dinghy Blunt UV Sun, which is the same length & wheelbase, but 0.6inches wider than the regular one. The wheels are also smaller on this one versus the regular version. Sorry for the confusion - overall, they're similar boards. But just make sure to check the specs before buying to ensure you're getting the right one.

@@lapreciouswhittaker213 Although the tug boat is bigger, it just depends whether or not the extra space is worth carrying around school. Are you planning to attach it to your backpack? These points all factor in. I am looking to buy a dinghy for college and I am 6 foot one so it's still quite small. I'm in the same situation. 😀

I just got my own Blunt, I wasn't even aware that this review was about the Blunt after watching when I picked my board out, so I thought I was getting a bigger version of the shown board, until I realized the dimensions matched and came back to rewatch lol As a beginner with chronic illness and lots of joint pains and aches, I shocked myself that I LOVED how the Blunt felt after practicing just balancing on it indoors, getting a feel for what muscles I'll need to work on for balancing, moving, and carving back and forth. I've been addicted to rowing machines because if you close your eyes and get into the rhythm you can actually feel like your gliding and pulling through the water on each stroke, so I've been super hyped to try surfing, surfskates, or just carving. I was worried too I was getting a too small of a board since its shorter than my old skateboard, but it turns out the extra 1.1" of width, quality hardware, and just enough amount of concave felt like a 10,000% improvement. I'm just an average 5'7" but weirdly enough I felt more confident learning my footing on the 3" shorter wheelbase Blunt because of the deck features, I could find center with my foot way faster and without as much looking as the flat skate deck and I didn't know how much I would appreciate that. Oh, and I never learned how to skate on my skateboard because when I was a little kid, the shop let me pick parts that didn't work together when I wanted to build one lol As in, if you try to turn and I mean AT ALL, it doesn't turn, it goes on two wheels! I'll update if I'm able to recover and start actually get moving outside, cheers and thanks for your top notch reviews that helped me pick my first cruiser

Glad for this guy and what he's doing. He might have bought that board with his own money, but looking at the racks of primo clean longboards he has behind him, his money probably is different to him than my money is to me. I don't think an extra shield on the inside of the bearing will matter, not even if you regularly ride in the rain because if you're doing a lot of that, well I like it.

I've had a dinghy for a while now, and there were a few things I decided to change out, I got some 63 mm fatty hawgs as a small upgrade from the 60 mm wheels that came stock, as the roads in my area are rather rough. I also changed out the rear riser pad for one roughly an eight of an inch shorter, as I have a custom built skid plate made of metal I decided to use on my dinghy. Lastly, I did a very aggressive cleaning on the bearings, and re lubricated them with some bones grease. Spoiler alert, I use this board for downhill racing, and I've never quite felt anything like it. It's incredibly nimble, while still having the stability of a much larger board. The slightly larger wheels increased my top speed from about 45 mph to about 50 near as my GPS tracker can tell, and so far I've used it to place 3rd in a local event with an 8 mile long track. This thing is amazing, if you want a deck that can do a little bit of everything, then this is about the best you can find for cheap. Some slight modification can be made to tailor to your needs but out of the box this board replaced the full functionality of a high end downhill deck and my everyday street slasher. Only thing I would ever really reccomend you change is the wheels, the 63mm i use for the daily grind and the 70mm race wheels i have are both wheel bite free, though i did have to tighten my bushings a smidge with the 70mm. 10/10 I have 2 more decks on the way for a backup and a testbed.
@concrete-waves
@concrete-waves 3 жыл бұрын
Duddeee hold up, did you say you use it for downhill? Didn't know that was possible, wow. Some really solid advice here, thanks for taking the time to write this. I always wondered if I changed the wheels to something bigger if I'd get wheelbite... especially with 70mm
@shieldcaptain54
@shieldcaptain54 3 жыл бұрын
@@concrete-waves Considering i'm a lighter rider the wheel bite with 70mm wheels will most likely be based more on tuning, i'm sure that a heavier rider would get some wheelbite, however I don't have a great way to test that. As for the downhill racing side of things this board is great at everything except slides (shorter wheelbase means less leverage), however I was able to compensate for that by tightening my wheels a little for a slightly lower top speed. I didn't want to chance any turns in the tournament. The last thing that I know some people might have some questions about is that custom skid plate, I had a local machinist plasma cut me a sheet of 1/8th inch steel, and I formed it a bit more with a roofing torch. I had these plates made as like a last ditch E-Brake for my downhill escapades, just lean back and stop while not destroying the deck. They fit in just like a riser pad, so its super easy to swap out. The only other mod I made to mine was a front foot stop, just to keep me from sliding off.

I am a complete noob, first time rider and bought this board as my first board. Of course I am far from being able to appreciate the quality of this board since I am barely able to ride it properly but each time I go out to learn is a celebration. I would agree that a beginner like me would most likely benefit from a stiffer board since it is really soft and reacts quickly. But hey maybe learning the moves on a more difficult board raises the bar a bit. :) I am thinking about maybe adjusting the trucks a bit to tighten the screw and see if it makes it less wiggly at least in these first weeks/months as I am learning. Very nice review! Also I am 34y old and never skated before it had always been a dream of mine to try it and now it's happening. I wish I cold have started earlier cause people cringe a bit seeing an older dude scared of turning left and right.

@@Commander_Cat I'm a US size 9 as well, I like my tugboat size a little more than my dinghy coffin, supposedly the blunt is right between. Blunt ought to be fine but I like the tugboats wider trucks and extra width

Hey man, since you stated to drop a comment if you find anything, I found a huge design flaw in the bearings. Having the spacers built in created a friction that made the bearings on my wheel permanently lodged onto the trucks. I was able to remove 3/4 wheels but one wheel was not coming off with cleaner, wd-40, or a hammer! In the end, I used a flat head screwdriver and a hammer trying to pop the wheel off but what occurred was me destroying the actual bearings and getting the wheel off but the spacers stayed on the truck and could not be removed. This made me basically throw the entire board away and purchase a new one - I will replace the bearings and use normal spacers. Here's a 2 min video that I shot to showcase the issue. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5ufitKZnKm7Z6c.html Thanks.

@fancy_andy3958 3 жыл бұрын
Are you sure they didn’t just fuse onto the axle from all that rust? I don’t think that had anything to do with the spacers. You should go for ceramics or titanium bearings.

A Landyachtz dinghy was my first, and so far only board. I'm still a beginner and trying to learn some tricks, but I have LOVED my dinghy so much, such a nice, smooth, relaxing ride. I love my dinghy honestly😌I'm glad I decided to get a dinghy as my first board👌can't wait to continue progressing and learning new things on my board!
@MaxxRemKing1

I got my first board last month and it is the Raft. It is super wide at 9.9 inches but I have big feet so it is super comfortable. The thing is after riding a couple times I find it is heavy and I am having a hard time learning basic skills such as kick turns and manuals on it. I even injured my ankle pushing it around. I still love it (it is super smooth and curvy) but I am torn between getting a Dingy Blunt to learn more basic board control, or just getting a basic popsicle. Most people have also said going down hills on Dingy is bad but one guy here literally races down hill so I don’t know what I’m going to get next.

I've been watching a ton of your guy's videos and it's been such an immense help. The quality, no BS straight to the point content is so refreshing to have. Thank you for all the time and effort you guys put into the videos. Think I'll be getting this or something similar because I'm heading to college soon and I only want to cruise. Do you think you'll ever be able to do a video on all the different Dinghy's? Doesn't have to be with all the boards on hand, just like a speculation just by looking at the specs and such. Anyways great video as usual, thank you.
