Lane Keep Assist and Lane Follow Assist are two technologies that are often misunderstood. Kia vehicles implement this tech in different ways than other vehicles, and it has changed a lot over the past few years. In this video, Peter explains the technology so that you can understand it in full, and enjoy the benefits!

Super useful thank you 🙏. I’ve been trying to get my head round the features on my 2023 Sportage - it’s super useful but can seem a little weird at times. Now I understand clearly the difference and the speed on/off action for the one feature that helps a lot. Love my hybrid Sportage.

I bought a used 2020 Kia soul GT line. These safety features are beyond excellent. Yesterday I went to move to the lane next to me without my turn signal on and the car ACTIVELY put me back in the current lane. It surprised me but I loved it. This car is always looking out for my safety. And I use my turn signals a lot more now. 😂You’ve done a fantastic job and as you know the GT line from 2020 is awesome but I won’t go on here with the compliments now. Great job KIA! This car is just plain fantastic. And the mileage is great too.

Thanks for this! I had a 22 Sienna with Lane Keep Assist which actively centered me and I could drive with no hands. I bought a 22 Prius with Lane Trace Assist and it is as you described and completely ineffective. The nudge back often doesn't work and even a slight bend in the road and you're immediately going off road with little or no correction. The Lane Keep feature on my Sienna and 23 Outback will work indefinitely if you velcro a one pound weight to the steering wheel at 9 or 3 o'clock to mimic your hand providing counter steer. I do this keeping my arm nearby just in case. Profoundly lowers arm fatigue on long trips.

Does it also "see" the lanes like LKA do? Also as you mentioned, the LKA "bounce you from one lane to the other", how is it different from lane departure warning?

Great and helpful video. I have the 2021 Sorento. My only issues with these features are when they put that snowmelt on the roads(here in the US) it confuses the system thinking it’s road lines. And every time it snows, the front camera gets covered up so the front collision warning shuts down. They should have installed a washer for it.

So what you're describing is the front RADAR plate being blocked by ice, not the camera. The camera is in the windshield, but the error message shows up when the radar plate gets covered in slush. If you wipe it off and re-start the car, it will reset itself and work. Fair point though!

Thanks for the explanation! IDK if its still relevant for 2021 Kia cars but it would be great if in my Niro HEV 2020 the LFA button could toggle the LKA when Active Cruise Control is active xD I got surprised when it didn't! Sometimes the roadworks and temporary line marks on the road can throw the system off and all I want is the part of ACC keeping the distance from the car in front of me. Your point about people not even trying out the systems is spot on :) I don't get when others complain about the system jerking the wheel - I found the force is pretty low and easy to counter, since - You know, the driver is supposed to keep the hands on the wheel, preferably with at least some grip

Took me a bit to figure these out, as the dealer I bought from in Maryland was of no help. I've found that the 'lane following assist' is great for long trips, as it definitely helps you expend less effort, thus making you less tired. It will allow you to drift from time-to-time, so you still need to actively drive the car, but is a definite 'assist'. For the 'lane keep assist', I do not like it budging me over, but I do like the beep warning, so I turned off the budge option and have mine just give the alarm. This is in a 2021 Seltos. Great questions. Steering past the system just feels like driving over a slight hump on the road. You can also turn the system off completely, but signaling your lane change also de-activates the system while you signal. When I use this on my car, if I ever have to cross the lane marker, I just signal my lane change.

My problem with the lane assist is when the line on the right hand side of the road veers to the right where there is a turn off to a side street or road, the car wants to steer in that direction. Yeah, there's a lot of mind boggling tech in our new vehicles. I was talking with the salespeople here the other day, and I think what's going to happen is you're going to see vehicles start to be treated like smart phones. People will set up the vehicle in one way for themselves, and another way for another driver. The vehicles will be capable of doing 100 things, and we'll all only use 20 features, but which 20 we use may vary between us. That's why it's nice to see that they're setting up "profiles" on the software. You can share the vehicle with someone and with one tap, get all the safety and technology features that you want, while the second driver can do the same.

Great video and explanation on how LKA and LFA were separated and how they both work. Cleared up some questions. I still have one left unanswered, though. I saw a couple of people had asked about this, but months ago when there was no concrete answer. I would love to be able to have LFA on every time I start my car. The manual for my 22 Forte GT Line says that if you enable LFA using the button on the steering wheel, then it will not resume after the car is restarted but goes on to say that if instead you turn on LFA using the system settings then it will. However there is no setting for LFA enabled or disabled in my setup, just for the LKA. Do you have any new updated information about this?
@BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 2 жыл бұрын
I don't expect this to be updated anytime soon. I'm guessing the feeling is, because the Lane Follow Assist can be active at any speed, that they don't want someone getting in the car and have the vehicle to start steering for itself, and have an unfamiliar driver not know what to do. I'm guessing they want the driver to actively push the button if the car is going to be steering for itself at slow speeds? I don't know, but that's my guess.
@TheRealmiggy

@@BrantfordKia That theory makes sense. I didn't realize it worked at any speed. I would prefer it work only 40 mph and above and be on when starting the car. I also wonder why it said what it did in the manual.

Interesting to see that Kia has evolved the system somewhat. My 2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0T has all these features; the LKAS (Lane Keep Assist System) and the adaptive cruise are all tied together through the same camera/radar system. Unfortunately, as I have discovered from living here in Colorado, snow is the system's archenemy. Snow/ice buildup on the radar square at the bottom of the front fascia/grille area is inevitable but understandable; there was simply nowhere else to physically locate the millimeter-wave radar and keep it out of the way. But when the snow builds up on the radar, the entire cruise control is disabled and it throws an error message on the multifunction display on the dash. The Honda LKAS does "rock" me back and forth a bit, but only after being turned on. It will "hunt" for the edges of the lane, but then when it finds them, it settles down. The process takes just a few minutes. My particular model year has had some programming glitches that cause the adaptive cruise to fail out in traffic. At random times under random situations, the adaptive cruise simply quits and throws an error message on the dash. It's an infrequent glitch in the system, and Honda can't figure it out.

Thanks for the comments - I've had snow build up here too, which causes the system to not turn on. Most days the roads are clear here (after snow removal) so it's only during snow storms that it struggles.

I just purchased a 2023 EV6 GT-Line and I can see how to turn on the lane keep assist and it stays on, but I can't figure out how to turn on the Lane Follow Assist and keep it on. I have to press the button every time I start the vehicle. If I press and hold the button it naturally just turns off the LKA press and hold it again and the LKA is back on. Would really love to keep them both on, like I have it in my 2020 Niro EV EX.

LKAS is an absolute nightmare on 60km roads in the Netherlands... it already tried twice in 4 days to steer my Kia Ceed into oncoming traffic because it's oblivious to these types of roads having a single lane in the middle with pseudo-bike lanes on the sides you are supposed to use with oncoming traffic. Frickin' system keeps resetting it too when I restart the engine too.. looking into some more drastic means to 'fix' this, because I absolutely loathe any kind of autonomous control.. If I wanted GLaDOS to control my car, I'd drive a Valve...

Will cars with this and with active cruise control automatically brake to avoid a collision, no matter what system is active or what speed? It took me a while to figure out that in my 2019 Niro, lane keep is inactive at low speeds under 60 km/h. What would be nice at any speed, is lane pothole avoidance!!
@BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 3 жыл бұрын
So, anything with forward collision avoidance, or autonomous emergency braking (whatever people want to call it) When I describe that system, I'm always careful to say that the system is "CAPABLE of stopping the vehicle to avoid a collision." I can't guarantee that it WILL stop, but yes, anything with lane keeping has some level of collision avoidance technology.

As a Police Advanced driver both of these features are a pain. Sadly in my 2022 XCeed they have to be switched off every time I start the car as the settings don't allow me to permanently switch them off, like I used to be able to do in all my previous Kias. They default back to 'on' every time I switch the car on..... annoying to say the least.

If you have to quickly get over into the next lane, say for instance a car brakes quickly in front of you or turns out in front of you, will you be able to steer the car into the next lane if LKA is on? Or will it nudge you back into the lane?
@BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. The reason that I use the word "nudge" is that the system does just that. It sort of feels like you're driving in a gully where turning left or right involves turning uphill a little bit. It's not something that will prevent you from moving unintentionally towards something that you don't want to turn towards, but it isn't something that's going to be difficult to steer past.

For LFA, does cruise control need to be engaged? Does it work well at night? Must it be reset every time you start the car? Will it work in the right lane? Let's say I'm going down a secondary highway at 1am, one lane in each direction. Speed limit 40. Double lines to your left, no lines to your right. No car ahead of me. But there's a cop on my tail, waiting for me to hit the line. I'm nervous, hit the line, get pulled over for being all over the road. Is LFA any use for the above, or do I instead need a tighter handling vehicle? I ask these questions as a professional driver who travels at least 60k per year, mostly delivering pharmaceuticals overnight. My skepticism is that LFA will work when I'm fine among other cars on the interstate in daylight, not when I'm being followed at 1am. Any good news to be had?
@BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's a lot of questions. Lane Follow Assist does not need Cruise control to be active to work. It does work at night, and it does work in many driving situations, even if there is a weak lane marker to the right of the road. You always know when it's active, because there is a light that looks like a steering wheel that shows up in the instrument cluster when the system is active. If that light is GREEN, then the vehicle is actively steering the vehicle, if it's WHITE, it's on, but not steering. It's very unobtrusive. Given your description of a fear of being pulled over, and a self described delivery person who deals with pharmaceutical deliveries purely at night... it sounds like you're a drug dealer shipping drugs in dark places... I'm not going to judge your career choice, but I will say that this system should prevent you from attracting attention from the authorities if it's used correctly, and it will work very well on less than ideal roads. Stay safe out there! :)

Hi Peter. If I understand things correctly... in the latest (i.e. 2021+ model-year) Kia and Hyundai vehicles, the principle setting for LKA is carried out in the 'Driver Assistance>Lane Safety' sub-category item in the Settings menu. Turning LKA on or off is accomplished by pressing and holding the 'Lane Keeping Assist' button (on right side of steering wheel) when the engine is on. If the engine is restarted, LKA will maintain the last setting. To turn LFA on or off you use the same 'Lane Keeping Assist' button on the steering wheel, but instead of holding the button down you simply press it briefly and release it. It's not clear to me yet whether LFA will maintain the last setting after a restart, or if it requires a new activation after each new engine restart. Perhaps you can clear this up? Thanks, Richard
