James Lange, CPA/Attorney and host of The Lange Money Hour and John Bogle, founder of Vanguard, talk about the importance of not relying on past performance to predict future results and the miracle of compounding interest. Like the Law of Gravity, Reversion to the Mean is an eternal rule. What goes up must go down, even in the stock markets.

Try Peter Lynch and of course Buffett/Munger. Funny how they all say some similar things.

The guy who invented indexing wouldn't dare talk or advise against indexing. Seems like a logical position. Just like Buffet who made his fortune picking stocks, wouldn't really talk against stock picking... Who is right? Perhaps we should just stick to the common underlying theme that lead both to their success, instead of the constant pitch against picking vs indexing.

Indexing is good if you don't want to learn finance, stock picking is good if you do want to learn finance.

Buffet actually endorses indexing as well. To the point that in his will he outlines that he wants his money put in an index fund.

If you have knowledge like Buffet, then why the hell you should index. You already know the winners! But it is extraordinary. Out of 7 billion there is only 1 Warren Buffet. This guy talks for the people like you and me, the folks. That's why Jack Bogle was legend. He was the legend of the folks, not the Wall Street.

None of this talk of time and emotions is important if you are not funding the accounts. The single most important factor is savings rate. You have to have money saved to earn the returns, then you have to have your emotions under control. Some emotional control is required at the beginning, this is why putting the saving on automatic deposit helps.
