I’m a Democrat, who lives in a border state, I recognize there has been a Southern Border Crisis for over 3 decades. Senator James Lankford (R), would have my vote if he was in my state. He admits the bill isn’t perfect, but it is a start at addressing border security. The bill also provides an aid package to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. Without approval of this bill, Ukraine is an imminent risk of losing more territory, and her citizens in the unprovoked war with Russia. This bill failed for one reason: it is an election year. The crisis at the Southern Border is not just a political issue. If a bill fails because of partisan politics, we will remain divided as a nation, and we will fail as a nation. Thank You Senator Lankford for trying.

@@breeze8363That's not what the bill does. You're repeating a false talking point. Right now the law is this: if you're an illegal immigrant physically in the United States, you can claim asylum. And once you do, the U.S. government has to thoroughly investigate your claim to see if it's legit. While that's happening, you get to remain in the U.S. And we only have so many holding cells, so for the most part these folks have to be released. THIS BILL CHANGES THAT. It says that if the Border Patrol *encounters* 5,000 illegal immigrants per day, the asylum rights get suspended. An encounter means just what it says. Even now, most people who are encountered are just deported. That won't change. Quite the opposite, because in a situation like this, the number deported goes up since those who claim asylum will also be sent back. (Unless they very clearly seem to be in danger of immediate physical harm.)

@Encyclopedist5 ай бұрын
Loopholes or not, it is the best border deal that Republicans will ever get. It looked likely to get enough Democratic votes to pass, which is shocking for a bill that provides no pathway to citizenship for all of the illegal immigrants who work so hard (often employed by Republicans!) and pay $11 billion in taxes. The bill doesn't even do anything for the Dreamers -- the immigrants who were brought here as children and don't know any other home. But Republicans saw an opportunity to twist Democrats' arms into voting for something they would otherwise turn down: by packaging it with funding to defend democracy against Russian tyranny in Ukraine. There won't be another immigration bill that's this harsh toward immigrants, because even if Donald Trump should win the presidency, Republicans aren't going to control 60 seats in the Senate, and (because of the filibuster that Republicans (and some Democrats) so often defend), you need 60 votes to advance a bill.
