Lantana - a fantastic bloomer. Can a garden have too much Lantana? I don't think so 😉

Lantana is such a bloomer from spring through frost! Depending on the type of Lantana you get, it is generally a perennial in zones 8 - 11, and sometimes a variety will go down to zone 7. Many gardeners will plant Lantana in containers in the summer and treat it as an annual. Lantana is a staple for my butterfly garden. It loves my heat and humidity and performs perfectly here. Many different types of butterflies love Lantana, from Gulf Fritillaries to Monarchs, to Swallowtails, to Red Admirals, and many Skippers. Hummingbirds will also visit my Lantana. If it freezes in winter in the Houston area, Lantana will die to the ground and come up in the spring. So far, I have not lost a single Lantana in 2 harsher winters for this area. If you would like to see my Lantana from last year, check out the following video at 5:50: - • We are still in the sw...

Of course you can never have too much Lantana! They never fail to disappoint. I love my Verbena equally as much but keep them mostly as container plants. Those trailing Lantana are so invasive, from their wide spreading growth to the reseeding. I had one in a pot on the sidewalk bordering the front flower bed. When we were moving a couple of years ago, I discovered that the tendrils had trailed very far into the flower bed and set root in many places along the way. I removed as much as I could but I think the new homeowners probably have some lantana 😀Lesson learned. Thanks for sharing yours!

Hi Jennifer - thank you for your post! Gardeners sharing their experiences helps so much. I dug out and got rid of a beautiful flowering trailing (or spreading) Lantana because of the width it grew to. Even pruning it wouldn't keep it under control. Now I only buy mounding Lantana that is sterile.

Love Lantanas. I plant them every year. In Michigan they don't survive the winters. The mound ones do beautifully in containers. Last year one was so gorgeous. Glad you explained the mound and trailing. Often wonder why some were so different. Have to read the tags better 😊Thank you

Getting a mounding Lantana that is sterile is a game changer for sure. Because they don't set seed, they put all their energy into blooming! Win-win! I am also very careful now when buying Lantana. All my new Lantana is the mounding variety.

I so agree with you! Their hardiness and bloom power all summer long until a freeze make them standouts in my book. Do you have a favorite?

Here in Central Texas (Zone 8b), we stumbled upon a few of the mounding Bandana series Lantana's, which aren't very big, but I'm guessing they are not close to being sterile. I don't see the Bloomify series anywhere locally (within 30 miles), and that series doesn't have a yellow variety. Pity.

I don't have lots of space, so the mounding type of lantana is my favorite. And I don't want my garden to be without lantana because of the pollinator attractor that it is. You are right, Bloomify doesn't have a yellow. 😕

Where have you found Lantana that doesn't set seeds? Mine do and I'm constantly dead heading them. Thankyou 😊

If you live in the Houston area, I shop regularly at a nursery called Enchanted Gardens. (It is located in Richmond). For instance, the Bloomify series is a sterile and mounding Lantana, which I can verify does what it claims. I love it. I have red and rose in this series. Google "Bloomify lantana" to read about it. You can order it online, or ask your local nursery to get it for you. Hope that helps! 😊

I have the miss huff lanatana variety. It gets way to wide for me. I had one get 8 ft wide lol. I also have the pink huff and its just as bad. I also have the gold mound. Its not as bad as other 2 but can still out grow its space. All these come back for me yr after yr for me in northern GA. Is there a mounding type that would do that?? PS, These all attract some awesome pollinators. I have them in ALLL day sun aand all summer there all butterfly's everywhere. So I cant get rid of them. I tried keeping them trimmed but you are cutting all gorgeous flowers off it will look weird for a few days. I tied trimming just the sides and it looks even more wierd with no flowers on the side and they are all on the top ha

Miss Huff can get really LARGE/wide, especially in the southern states in full sun. (And Georgia fits that bill perfectly!😊) The width can be an issue for me, as they quickly outgrow many spaces. BUT, as you describe so well, they attract the pollinators and are a favorite flower for so many types of butterflies! I am with you - I just have a hard time pruning these "sprawling" types of lantana (the varieties that get so wide) because they flower so well and support so many types and numbers of pollinators. But, I am replacing my wide Lantana with mounding types of Lantana. Last year was the first year I purchased the sterile mounding types of Lantana Camera. I purchased 7 plants, and they really grew very well in a mounding habit, they did not grow wide. I LOVED them. And they flowered wonderfully just like the "sprawling" or "wide" growing Lantana.

All 7 of my Mounding Lantana came back this spring and are flowering beautifully now. I was really wondering what was going to happen because we had that awful December, 2022 freezing event where we got down to 17 degrees with 0 degree windchill. (I have never experienced that in the Houston area for 38 years). We had freezing weather for 4 days straight, and even though we covered our beds, we did lose a few perennials here and there because of it. Not the Lantana though. I purchased Bloomify Red and Bloomify Rose Lantana from one of my favorite nurseries in the Houston, TX area. The tag states it is a "dwarf" mounding lantana that will get 10-14 inches tall and 10-12 inches wide. Mine were in full sun and got larger than that in our sunny heat and humidity. They were more like 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide. They flowered continuously up until the December freeze. I then cut the dead branches back this spring when the new growth started emerging from the roots.

@@ButterfliesNBirds hi! I just got the sprawling type lantana. I will plant it in a large container… I kind of regretted not doing my research beforehand, as I would have liked to having bought the mounding kind. That said, did you leave the sprawling lantana outside and did it survive the freezing temperatures? Thank you for the awesome content!!
