The only reason I can think of for Roglic not trying to go with Mas and Lopez or attack earlier is because he couldn't. I feel like Roglic is the rider that when he feels good, he always in front and on the front foot attacking. When he doesn't feel good, he sits in the wheels. He's not like a Carapaz or someone who bluffs when he sits in the wheels. Maybe if he did that more, it might help him but he's a true racer and gotta respect that. All in all, fifteen seconds loss of Remco I think was pretty close to best case scenario for him on this stage.

i think roglic knew how the 2 spanjards wouldn't play together, so he had to pace those 2 up the mountain. when he was really good he could have used those 2 while they were like 3 seconds in front all the time

Watching Roglic when he was with Remco and O'Connor I was under the impression he was pretty cooked as well: I think he was able to distance Remco only because he was a little bit less cooked than him and he saved more energies

a stage not as exciting as i expected. smart ride from remco not going hard on either of the two past stages not following moves and not letting himself crack. this vuelta will come down to remco’s week three form, and with no TT to be his saving grace perhaps Mas might be his biggest rival, he’s been in better form than i think most people expected

Exactly! To me it was the smartest move of the day when Remco just let Roglic do his thing and not counter it at the expense of losing only a few seconds, but while gaining a day of perhaps fresher legs strategically before a rest day. Not one but two days of cooling out a bit for Remco just before the last week of racing. Dude has been racing like he's been doing it for decades. What a show he's putting on!

Climbs with average gradient under 8% are most times disappointing
@DerMef
@DerMef Жыл бұрын
The Galibier is below 8% and still legendary. Sierra Nevada is a similar climb: long, high altitude but not extremely steep. It's just not the best for a stage finish. Unfortunately the Vuelta usually has stages that have either a good final climb or a long, high altitude climb, but not both in the same stage like the Tour de France.

Agree Col du Granon was extremely steep and it was epic
@Fyr35555
@Fyr35555 Жыл бұрын
@@DerMef the north side of the Galibier is 17km at 7% and that includes a false flat so much of it is actually 8%+. Sierra Nevada on the other hand is 21km at 7% but the first 5km average about 11% so in reality most of the climb even while at altitude is only 5-6%. Which makes a massive difference. The south side of the Galibier is also less steep but at least is regularly over 7-8% in the last kms. But I definitely agree that in Spain its hard to find a combination of long high altitude climbs and good final ones. Actually ignore what I said about Sierra Nevada according to the Vuelta website its actually 7.9% average not 6.9% as I had thought. Anyway the gradient is definitely still not as hard in places, where its only 5-6% in the middle of the climb.

When Roglic went to the back after the attack at the foot of Sierra Nevada, Jumbo was trying to set a trap for Evenepoel. Jumbo hoped he would go solo and later run out of steam. But Quickstep was smart. Knowing that Roglic did not seem stronger than Evenepoel, they decided to keep one tempo that he could maintain till the top or till close to the top. It saved his Vuelta. The kid took all the right decisions and became a grant tour winner. Then he kept this form into the worlds.

That are all climbs that are really suited to Evenepoel and were draft really matters so only with like mulltiple masive attacks and satalite riders that can provide draft on those 4% parts I don't see anyone gaining more than 20/30sec. So Roglic would have to do that on 3 stages to make up the difference. Evenepoel has this Vuelta almost in the bag.

The only option on thursday is an 80km raid and only if he can drop Remco at that point. I don't see it happening unless Remco cracks/has a really bad day. As for Saturday, he'll also need to go on the penultimate climb, and the stage overall doesn't really suite taking back a lot of time, unless you are just really dominant or someone again cracks completely.
@andrasszabo1570

Yes, the 3rd week is as easy as they come. There are 2 sprint stages, 2 hilly stages where it will be hard to gain any time, and the two mountain stages where there's not a single climb over 6%. Their PCS profile score is only 214 & 216. Compare this with the Giro, which had 4 significantly harder mountain stages and a 17 km ITT at the end. Or with the Tour, where there were 3 mountain stages, including 2 MTFs on Peyragoudes and Hautacam and a 41 km ITT. It's easy to see that the Vuelta's 3rd week is really "decaffeniated" compared to them, to quote Mas. Funny thing is, he didn't talk about this year's race but coined the phrase in 2020.

@@rickhammel7907 We have neither the knowledge that he can hold up for 3 heavy weeks nor that he can't. One of the main questions people had was whether Remco could hold on for 3 weeks. The thing is that with the form he has shown the past 2 weeks and especially today, he'd have to absolutely crack in this very easy third week (for a GT) to lose 1:30. If this was a week like this TdF, it would be a completely different. We can say the same about Roglic, everyone assumes he can last for 3 weeks, despite a shitty preparation. Why? Its better when he makes a Tempo hes Confident with, then trying to follow Roglic and crack completly. He did the right Thing. The last week isnt that hard anymore. The climbs suit him better. He just have to follow know.

remco lacks explosive power otherwise could have stayed with mas. It's weird because he is more muscular so one could expect that he is more explosive

He doesn’t lack explosive power - take LBL - but he conserves more energy by tapping out a rhythm I think
