Spoilers Ahead: The series was censored due to China banning homosexuality in media but the actors and creators had read the novel and did their best to work around the censors to remain faithful, and in the novel, Wangji was in love with Wuxian at least by the time they were captured by the Wen Clan, and had a crush on him from the first time they met. By the time Wuxian came back, Wangji had dedicated 16 years of his life in mourning, 3 years recovering from a beating he took for rebelling against his clan for Wuxian. For the scenes of their growing up, the director left all of the actions Wangji did in support of Wuxian in, but the one time he kissed Wuxian, which China wouldn’t allow. So they replaced it with Wuxian calling him his soulmate, which honestly was less problematic and more romantic. And the later scenes, they replaced them with less explicit but equally romantic scenes, but in the novel, when Wuxian stopped being a dumb bisexual, he realized he was in love too.
