Great review. I use my Ts17 for landscape - avoiding leaning trees and mountains. I find holding my hand strategically to shadow takes away flare. I suspect I could avoid same on Laowa. But sunbursts ? - not. Any observations. I would buy for the 15mm if it does not have big problems at dawn.

Great review, thanks! Question: I wonder how the flaring looks on the Canon if you would have had the sun in the same distance to the image edge in both images. I have a suspicion that the flare on the Laowa is worse because the sun is closer to the center of the image. Suggestions: When you shoot yourself sitting at the table, why not stop down the lens so that the lenses that you hold in your hands are not blurred out. I would have loved to see them sharper next to each other when you talk about their details. Also having a more stable image during those scenes would be nice.

I got my Laowa 15mm shift EF-mount a week ago and use it on the Fuji GFX 50r, useable until 8mm of shift !!!! Awesome lens, i love it!

I bought the Laowa. For a couple of reasons: It's sharper than the Canon. It's wider with more shift. It's fully manual, no electronics required - which means I can even use it on a Leica M body. Crazy I know... But 60MP Leica M11 anyone? It's smaller and less heavy than the Canon - I will use this lens on forest hikes for extreme wide angle stitched panoramas in the Pacific Northwest rain forests. I actually find the control ring to shift the lens to be less fiddly than on the Canon TSE lenses. The focus throw is nicer for precise focusing. I found a deal bringing the price of the EF version, new in box down below USD1,000.

Not trying to negate the internal-reflection-sharpness conclusion, but shooting 'decisive' scenes with obviously moving clouds and the sun at/close to the border (where the difference of one lens being wider is) does not look like ideal conditions for such a test I'd say.

I agree that's why we were very selective in how we shot the images to test that point. The images where you see the softness in the Laowa lens was shot at a time when the sky around the sun was completely clear. You'll notice how the lighting conditions in both images is pretty much identical in that specific comparison. Conditions around that time remained very similar and we went back and forth between both lenses multiple times taking a bunch of images to make sure we're not making any mistakes. Images were also viewed on an iPad whilst we were shooting to prevent mistakes.

Great review !!! I’ve been doing architectural photography for decades. Originally with the Pentax 67 and their 45mm. Then with Arca Swiss medium format 6x9. 47 was the widest available kind of a 20mm equivalent. Very slow and cumbersome process thst often got in the way of just doing photography. So for somebody of my vintage the ease of use of the terrific shift method and the tiny size is amazing. I use the Canon 24mm TS-E on a gfx and love the lens, but the more I think about various very tough shots like a 4 story 300 foot long building on a narrow street or a great facade in a narrow alley, this 15mm lens will make a lot of shots viable and better. I think your comments are very well taken about flare. I try to carry a black umbrella. It helps but I often have shots trashed by a bit of umbrella in the frame. It’s great to hear these reviews from an architectural photographer btw. Very challenging kind of work!!!

Very thorough comparison! Definitely intrigued by the new development (and Canon TS lenses announced in the road map), but imagine I would hold out to ensure the best quality. Love the idea of dedicated shift only lenses. Wish I could lock the tilt on all of my Nikon's!

Nice review! We have the Canon, and also an earlier Laowa 15mm shift, but it’s quite compromised by average sharpness, major barrel distortion, and no rotation ability. Still, with effort, we get some okay results with it. But this newer lens sounds way better!

I just got this lens and on first impression, like you I note love view exposure is way out. Also no focus confirmation, even unshifted. Seems great in all other respects - happy with the sharpness across the frame.

Thank you for this comparison. Very helpful in choosing whether to keep my Canon TS-E 17mm, or switch to Laowa 15 Shift, to save 250 grams. I wouldn't miss the Tilt function, but the better harsh light performance of the Canon will keep me schlepping around their 17mm.

I don't know if there are any answers to this but although the shift element 'corrects' the perspective leaning distortion, it seems to me that it is creating another distortion of its own, if you look at min 8:42 for example the top of the building (which has been cut off from the Canon) is no longer at 90 degrees angle, it's more like 45 degrees and looks as if it is pointing up rather than out. I appreciate this is not a specific problem to the lens tested but to shift lenses in general and I wonder how architectural photographers square (pun intended) having non-distorted vertical and distorted horizontals. Any solutions welcome.

The Canon is definitely more sharper in center areas and has more color accuracy and less reflection problems. The Loawa gets points for the corners. But I would go for the Canon. But next year new TS-AF are coming for Canon-RF :)... if anyone needs this - I would wait.

Antireflective glass coatings are not the only responsible factor for reducing lens flare. Also mechanical construction , i.e. black matt flocking of internal walls, special coating and painting of metal parts inside the lens barrel as well as masks and light "traps" are contributing a great deal to flare suppression. Since this kind of technology is more subtle, newer and not so widely available as glass coatings, I suspect that this is where lens manufacturers with very long experience like here Canon and others (especially Zeiss) have an advantage over a much younger company like Venus Optics. Laowa lenses are mostly very good quality-wise, innovative and cleverly designed. But of course innovation and intelligence alone cannot make up for many decades of highly specialised know-how. Even more so at the affordable prices of Laowa lenses.

Great review. I have ts17, ts24, ts90, R5, 5DSR. Will likely buy Laowa 15 because sometimes 15mm is needed. I have also seen your Ts adapted to GFX - thank you. Might buy Fuji GFx 100s to get TS~13shift and Laowa ~11mmshift -- sometimes mountains need wide. But I wonder - TS17 has field curvature and is best focussed mid frame/not centre and may do better near infinity than at these sample distances.

Great comparisson, I think this lense is for photographers who want the experience of a Tilt lense without enough budget and that are not super pro and have an apsc camera. The canon 17mm is double the price and not everyone can pay for it

How is the compatibility with live view in apps or in an ipad? I use a lot this apps for my footage, I'm an architectural photographer, and I really need it to work with live view

Depending on the camera live view should be fine. I just seem to have issues with the 5DSR but not with any other camera. Cant figure out why.

There's no compatible filter holder system that I'm aware of right now but I'm sure someone will eventually produce one for it.

Another great comparison, exactly the camera/lens combo I'm planning on using. The value represented is too good to pass up - I've pondered the 17 often but the price for what I would get out of it is just not justifiable. I'm anxious to get my copy and see how the image circle covers the GFX100 sensor too..

I love seeing this kind of lens innovation-I know they're niche, but it's so disappointing more manufacturers don't make shift lenses. It'll be interesting to see if the rumors are true about a 14mm TS lens for Canon RF hold water. I don't think I'd want one that wide-it's hard enough controlling distortions with the 17 as it is, but I'm sure it'll be a brilliant lens.

I was legit about to pull the trigger on the Laowa, and I still might, but that flaring issue is causing a hard pause. Still can't beat the price when compared to the Canon though. I am debating holding out for the upcoming RF 14mm Tilt-shift, but I imagine that's going to cost an arm and a leg. I wonder if getting a small matte box with a flag could solve the flaring issue and make the Laowa more appealing...

Hello and thank you for this great video. I recently have this Nikon F mount lens and I am surprised by one thing and would like to know if you have noticed too or if you have the explanation. When I modify the aperture setting (F4.5 / 22) I see the consequence directly in the viewfinder (the image darkens). I have another manuel lens and it is not the same problem. This is annoying when taking a photo in a dark place. thank you in advance

I had that happen on a DSLR but it didn't occur with several other lenses so I'm not sure what's going on. I spoke to laowa about this and they weren't quite sure either.

I think it's more camera limitation... I have a 5dsr too and 3rd party manual lenses just don't work correctly with exp sim. On the Eos R, no problems at all... so I guess it's a camera limitation.

Possibly but I personally don’t enjoy the look of super wide interiors. I rarely shoot wider than 24mm when inside. I’m sure it could be fine to shoot interiors for those with a wider shooting style though.

I think you should watch your own footage again here. I own the Laowa lens and it really isn't sharper than the Canon. Even in your own examples where youre saying the Laowa is sharper, it isn't - especially towards the end of the video where the brickwork is noticeably muddy on the Laowa image while the canon is crisp. Perhaps lighting conditions do change the image quality a bit, but it really isnt all that sharp this lens, and i'm considering sending it back for over a grand. That said I do take a lot of Shift shots and the alternative is a lot more money. I would say this lens is fine (solidly built certainly) but its not winning one award for sharpness. and it ghosts and abberates plentifully too.

Ts-e 17mm rules. Color is always important. Additional asspain with the colorchecker isn't worth it.

@@_rhapsodist I think it's difficult to produce a lens hood for these types of lenses because of how wide and bulbous they are. The 17 tilt shift doesn't have one either but I think coatings could help a great deal.
