Hey Michael, I love your videos. I got a camera this Christmas (in a teenager) and you really got me into macro. Now I've got a Laowa 60mm, a godox flash, and a cool photo album to show friends. I have the Laowa 85mm and it's a really nice lens. I find I'm using it far more than my 25mm because I'm just not that steady to handhold 5x. 2x is already hard for me. And the 85mm can focus to infinity so I can back off to 1x or less if I really need to.

You've given me the extra incentive to get the gear out of winter storage. My laowa 100mm 2x has been a good replacement for my canon that kept needing repaired. I've checked my usual spots and already have jumpers, looking forward to a summer where life is a little closer to "normal". Thanks for posting.

I had done a few tests with extension tubes indoor, trying to measure working distance and magnification. Went outdoors for inseact macrophotografy for the first time ever, last Friday, and it was awesome. With simple gear like Canon T6, 50mm lens and a flash with difuser. Was lucky enough to take pictures of this insect that you say it's a stink bug, over a lot of eggs. Only noticed he was sitting on tops of eggs (or whatever is called the white thing with future stink bugs inside it) when checking the first photo attempt on the LCD display. This will be my hobby from now on.

It's a hoverfly! Here is a tip..... In cold climates overwinter if you look for a Holly below Birch trees the stems will be covered in hibernating Birch Catkin Bugs and often there will be 7-spot ladybugs hibernating alongside so on a day when the sun shines they can wake up and grab a meal.

Another good video, thank you. I like the Meike 320P minispeedlite, it's a good bit of kit for macro. I use one with my OMD-S OM1 and used to own a 320S with my Sony A7R4. It's really lightweight but has a decent GN and adjustable head. I use the plastic diffuser, as I find the type you use too big - I have my macro OM1 on the hip holster of my Cotton Carrier G3 and another OM1 + 300mm/40 - 150mm on the chest holster.

Enjoyable and educational as always. This is my first summer doing macro and with my new Laowa 65mm. I'm frustrated because it's been so difficult to find good insect subjects. Hey Micael! You were mainly the one that inspired me to take up macro photography. Especially insects. I now own both the 60mm and the 100mm Laowa macro lenses. Same diffuser (different brand) paired with flash and the A7RIV. I really wanted the resolution to be able to crop in heavy if needed. Last summer I found all kinds of insects to photograph and it was great. So I was super excited to get out now that it’s spring. I went out a week or so ago and just like you said, it’s still a little early. All I could really find was black ants and the tiniest spiders in the same place. None bigger than a few millimeters. Guess I gotta give them time to grow! Looking forward to shooting a bunch more this spring and summer! And looking forward to more of your videos!

Hi Micael, great video as usual, I really really enjoy following You in Your wood walks, I'm always planning a trip in Sweden, maybe the next year... However, the ladybug is probably Adalia bipunctata the spider is a running crab spider (Family Philodromidae), I think Philodromus dispar or Philodromus sp. I do not rcognize the fly's species, surely is a Syrphidae of tribe Syrphini, but I don't know very well this Family! The weevil is probably a Species in the Phyllobius Genus The stinkbug might be Elasmucha grisea, but again, I'm not really into bugs and stinkbugs have a really wide range of colors, they can be confusing :D

I‘ve bought a mirrorless recently (the Lumix S5) and the 85mm Laowa, but I am struggling to get the results I used to get with the Canon EOS 90D and the Laowa 100mm. One thing ist the the viewfinder, and as an old SLR shooter, the EVF doesn‘t work for me well. Also, on the the full frame combined withe 85mm gives me too shallow a depth of field.

I'm thinking about getting the Laowa 85mm in Sony FE mount too. I'm planning to design a 3D-printed adapter so I can use it on my Canon 5D III as well (the adapter will add an extra ~30mm extension, but this is fine for a macro lens)
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 2 жыл бұрын
You will not be able to use it on a dslr. This lens is made only for mirrorless cameras, and they have a shorter flange distance. If an adapter to use Sony FE glass on Canon EF cameras exists, I would love to see how it is designed 😄 the other way around works fine though and would add 3 cm
@thenickdude
@thenickdude 2 жыл бұрын
@@MicaelWidell you're right, but increasing the flange distance is not a problem for macro photography, it's just equivalent to shooting with a 30mm extension tube added before the lens. It's only an issue if you want to retain infinity focus.

@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 2 жыл бұрын
I actually find the big resolution a problem more than a positive thing. All the RAW files will take up more space, and in macro photography it''s not that great of an advantage as the resolution is hindered by diffraction anyway. But sure, if the A7RV comes out soon I will consider it, but mostly because it will probably have a great EVF.
