Theoretical Physicist Sabbadini presents the quandary of Quantum
Mechanics, and draws illumination from Tao Te Ching.
Ancient and primitive cultures conceived the whole cosmos as alive and sentient. The mainstream current of our culture has moved towards an ever greater separation of matter and mind and today’s dominant scientific world view is based on an essentially materialistic representation of reality, in which consciousness is considered an epiphenomenon of purely material process. Yet it can be argued that the obstinate persistence of the so called measurement problem in quantum physics is a symptom pointing to the need to radically rethink the way in which we represent reality. This talk proposes an understanding of the quantum
measurement process in which the embodied nature of the observer plays an essential role. And it will show an amazing congruence between this world view and the cosmology
outlined in the first chapter of Laozi’s Daodejing.

Sabbadini [31:50]: "We appear to be located within the world and within a body. We are experiencing the world from within a body, which means that all of our experiences are correlated with a happening, a change, a process, a something in a body. So all our experiences are connected to a recording of information and that's the reason why the world appears classical to us. It appears either/or, it appears like solid reality. OK, this is tricky and subtle so I'm sure we'll have to discuss and investigate it further." So why does he stop here at the most important point? This is where he could give a solid explanation based on everything that he's been leading up to but he peters out and goes on to talk about the Tao Te Ching. The body is a recording apparatus so we break the probability wave and get a solid object. This is the arising of nama and rupa, shape and form, the ten thousand things. He needs to add the second part to the above citation. What is it? Can we infer: The appearance of being located within the world and within a body is just an appearance and it doesn't have to be so? By not experiencing the world from within a body, we do not break the probability wave and all is without form, all is unnamed? Classical 'reality' is equivalent to samsara and the illusion of a separate world out there and maintaining the probability wave is equivalent to liberation? I'm trying to add logical sequiturs here. I wish he'd gone on to explain further at this key point!

I think you got it... Samsara is basically a distorted (limited) view of nirvana... like dust covering a light... Because of ignorance, we have become a recorder device.. perception... we have placed an unnecessary limit in our infinite self ... without this limitation, we would know all, see all, experience all right now.. thereby being enlightened, complete, etc... this ability is right within us right now.. where else could it be!

The Tao is not a thing, but a concept that refers to the mystery of existence, the laws that govern it and the wisdom needed for each human to navigate it. The patterns of existence are there to be realised. Some are large, some are small. It should not surprise us that ancient thinkers were able to discover some of them.

Kind of boring presentation but I really live quantum mechanics and spirituality so I am glad I stayed through the entire lecture because he gave some really good gems from the Dow de Ching. Lou Zu said the secret is to hold the name and no name together as one. The word existence means to leave/ exit- and as you do you feel that separation and therefore suffer- its the perspective you hold that releases you from suffering. So if you believe you are the wave in the ocean (where the wave gets consumed by another one) you will suffer thinking you are just a wave and separate from the Ocean. Rather the ocean and wave are one.

It's one's own separateness that causes one's suffering. We cling the very thing that causes one's suffering.

A friend of mine from college knew how to do this too. His father was from Shandong and mother was from Japan. He grew up in Taiwan. His mother was a Japanese orphan after the defeat of Japan in WW2, left behind in Taiwan. He remains the most interesting person I have ever met. He spoke fluent Chinese of course, but also Japanese, Russian, and English. He did his philosophy thesis in Russian even though we were in America. He did fortune telling for his friends and also did one for German philosopher Wittgenstein. He discovered Wittgenstein was gay. He was always very accurate. He used Chinese geomancy. I had my fortune told in Taiwan where a man felt my pulse. Everything he told me about myself was true, and also my future. I think Chinese fortune telling is frighteningly accurate! I’m from Taiwan originally, Dad from Shanghai during the civil war.

Those that speak of Taoism as being the way of Nature do not know the way of Tao. The source, name, the identity of the source of the Creation of Taoism, can not be spoken of, given a name, is nameless, can not be Identified. The Reality of everything being born of a random Singularity having a dual Quality, the Way of Tao is not One-1 way; Tao is two. These two ways are the same, identical, yet each distinct from the other; as the two-issue forth from the same, a single nameless source they are spoken of differently. The secret waits for the insight of eyes unclouded by longing. Mystery upon mystery; those bound by desires born of Nature's law of Cause and Effect, are themselves super facial, see only the outward container. Having passion, however, will allow things that have Mother Nature as their source to be made manifest Reality. These two Mother Nature and Reason as one are the gateway to the manifold secrets of the Universe.

I am trying to form words not to agree, but to say that when I encountered QP in my forties, I was immediately convinced that the Tao I read in my 20's had taught me all I needed to know. Can anyone describe the theory that suggested that two particles separated by time and space communicate - a theory Einstein refuted - but has been a thorn in QP. When I heard about that one, I realised that I'd had the experience called love, described scientifically. Why we urge to be part of each other, why some people or things draw us to them or others repel. I cannot quite believe that a scientist has in some way agreed with an idea I nurtured in secret so long. Still, perhaps I should be less interested in measuring these thoughts, and just be still. Off to China in 5 weeks, perhaps, if I am supposed to go....maktub.

John O'Boyle Although the idea of love being a quantum phenomena is really romantic and feels right, it's been fairly well shown how love developes, what chemicals are responcible for the feeling, etc. I'm in love and would prefer that the connection my partner and I have was a physical force, but it's basically just chemical -- It doesn't negate the feeling though. Quantum entanglement is the subject that you could look up on if you wanted to learn about "the theory that suggested that two particles separated by time and space communicate."

I got there, none the wiser, just a little more humbled. chemistry is only half the story, we are certainly drawn to people across distances, forget attraction, and ignore coincidence. Nothing is coincidental about entanglement.

+John O'Boyle In this same sense of reference to the totality as it manifests as above, so below, I find it curious to look at gravity. An inherent force of togetherness of apparent things, so concluding in 'large' portions as the outpouring of stars. Like great energetic balls of potential that actualize as the fuel for the development, or the collapse, of many variegated life-forms. Though perhaps at some point we must be careful which bridges we connect, it seems apparent that the analogies we make (especially the better ones) imply an inherent unity from which they all exist. In other words, to say that they are more than merely analogies, but evidence for a fractally functioning universe (as above, so below) that the source of each apparently parallel phenomena is the same. You see what I mean? Or is it more direct to just be quiet? :) It's wonderful to see the western scientific approach integrate with such ancient experiential wisdom, and perhaps just in time for the current crises. Of which I confer to the concrescence as mentioned by such greats as Terence McKenna.

Hey man. Your Chinese translations are off. I'm a westerner but I speak Chinese, I've lived here for 13 years. I am about HSK (Chinese proficiency test) level 4 in reading. Dao can also mean arrive. Wo dao le. I've arrived. Feichang means very. Feichang doesn't mean constant, it means very. Ke you have got right. Keyi means possible for example, keneng means can do. You got the tones spot on too. So, really it means... there are many, hahaha, sorry but that is the nature of this verse. The way that is possible (for you) is very much the way. So I'd then, from there say it means, you are on the dao of the dao, the road to the way. And, the name that can be named is very much the name. ..Looking a bit futher into this, I see other translations are saying the same as yourself. Well, haha, my translation here is first hand. And like I say, the nature of this verse is very much like that. Lots of Chinese verse, usually in sentences of four words can mean many, many different things.

Andrew Kane - Your understanding of the words are the modern way the words are used, but it’s not the classic meaning of the words. The Tao De Ching was recorded in 文言文, that is the classic Chinese, whereas, the current written language is now in now is 白话文, that is vernacular, which explains your interpretations of those words.
