In this Lapidary 101 video I show you how to make an amazing stone cabochon using a dop stick instead of doing it by hand. I'm working on a preform of Tahoma Agate from Washington, USA, and discuss techniques of holding your cab and how to maximize efficiency and speed when cutting your stone!
Scared of agates and jaspers because they take too long to cut? Watch this video!! A couple key tips and tools will cut your time down so you can shape your stone as QUICKLY as possible.
**Thanks for tuning in to ‪@SeanEckelArt‬! If you like what you see please check out my Instagram @eckel.lapidary for more beautiful rocks and natural artwork.**
Be sure and watch my previous Lapidary 101 video below on how to prepare your preform and adhere it to a dop stick with wax and a dop pot, and check out any of my previous videos in the Lapidary 101 playlist to find out the basics of cutting rocks such as how to use a slab saw and how to cut preforms.

I am now understanding all the work that goes into making a cab and will be more appreciative of the price of a cab at a gem show. I am a metalsmith and had the same appreciation when taking raw materials and bringing them to a finished piece of jewelry. Lots of time, blood, sweat and tears but so rewarding. I truly enjoy the entire process. Thank you for sharing your time, knowledge and expertise! ❤

Buddy that adjusting the balance at 5:18 is exactly what I needed ! Sometimes my wheels get wobbly when I switch them out and it drives me crazy, glad there’s a technique to smooth it out thanks!

PS re: for cold water I use a drop in bucket heater (think it’s used for livestock or ponds) but it’s indispensable here in Oregon.

Cheap stainless aquarium heaters behind your wheels can keep your hands warm in a cold basement. Thanks for sharing.

Haha! Oh it’s probably in a garbage bin somewhere.. but I like to imagine it’s being used in bird nests all over Utah to help raise little chickies in a safe and cushy home 🥰

If you trim those sharp corners off, there will be less damage to your wheel.

Sean, you mention "going through the motions on all the wheels". Your videos are fast motion in the grinding of the shapes. Voice over does not show the actual motions to create the cab profile. What are those motions: specifically and clearly - like, what is the goal of each movement and how to get the desired shape in visual in additionto your description? Please and thanks

Not me, pal. I put onto a cord or cordless powered drill the hook/loop fitted rubber pad utilized for sandpapering. But I won't be sanding stone. Next I secure my drill in a table vice so once turned on my hands aren't needed to hold it. I add hook/loop with adhesive backing scrap cardboard. I usually then use a five inch jar lid as a guide for my ink marker pen. Which I then cut out a disk. I mate my paired hook/loop items to start working soft stone, Dop-stick mounted rock or by my hands if making an egg replica. So, I'm polishing stone usually too soft for conventional lapidary. Since my tool shed allows me an opportunity. Without all the conventional bells and whistles. Adios.
