YESSSSS! at the end of the second movie gen is all like “he’s obsessed w you” but peter knew that lara jean didn’t like him talking to her and he still did! i think lara jean would be okay with peter talking to gen if he had only told her all those different times instead of playing dumb. he also protected gen way too much. i think that peter should be with gen because hes obviously obsessed with her and lara jean with john ambrose. That relationship with Peter is not real. That relationship is toxic af and the only reason Lara is so focused on him and is so in love is because Peter is her first boyfriend and she’s scared to get hurt. The books just shows Peter even worse because he always prioritizes Gen and himself and never LJ.

ahreum yoon Thats your opinion and you’re entitled to that. However, I would like to offer an alternative perspective as someone who (sadly) has experience with many of the themes in this story. First, you called Peter and Lara Jean’s relationship “toxic.” Which I strongly disagree with. They are dysfunctional at times, mostly because of their limited understanding and experience on a the subject. But that’s not the same thing as toxic, which we are given a terrific example of in Peter’s codependent relationship with Gen. What we glean from both books and movies is that these two got together *very* young. Which in and of itself can be a problem when trying to establish and assert one’s own identity. But on top of this we learn Gen has a history of depression and suicidal ideation. Peter explains how in the ignorance of youth, being the one she came to with these problems made him feel special and important, but as they got older, the pattern began to take an emotional toll. It became more of a burden than a privilege, and one of the reasons they kept coming back together. Because no matter how bad things got between them or how much he knew it needed to end, he couldn’t leave her alone in a crisis. He couldn’t *trust* her alone in a crisis. Peter enabled Gen first out of love and ego, then later out of obligation and fear. Which is why he struggles so much with boundaries when that relationship officially comes to an end and he falls in love with someone else. Gen doesn’t understand or respect boundaries between them and Peter has been trying to save her so long that it’s become instinct for him. That kind of behavioral addiction takes time to break. The brain has to be rewired just like with any other addiction. Which is why he can’t just cut her out or say no to her. Or rather why he doesn’t *feel* or *believe* he can. He also doesn’t feel like it’s his secret to tell. Gen shared these things with him in confidence. And together or not, keeping those promises means something to him. Which is actually a good quality and one of the things Lara Jean fell in love with him for. She just doesn’t like it when that honor and chivalry works against her for a cause she doesn’t want or understand. I’m not saying that absolves Peter of guilt or consequences. Because it doesn’t. Doing the wrong thing for the right reason is still wrong and pain is hurtful and damaging whether it was intentionally inflicted or not. But it is realistic for someone in his situation. He feels trapped between honoring his commitment to Gen (which he doesn’t feel he has the right or ability to abandon her) and making Lara Jean happy (which he genuinely wants and tries to do). Since these two goals are in direct conflict with one another, he inevitably fails at both. Gen does everything in her power to lure Peter back in. She repeatedly tests him, hoping and expecting him to fall back into their destructive pattern, but remains faithful to Lara Jean. He defends her and warns Gen that Lara Jean is his breaking point. All he is willing to offer her is friendship and support and if she goes after LJ, she will lose him completely. This is the only boundary he ever sets that she respects and it’s because she knows he will follow through. She is under no disillusion that she is still the most important person in his life. The only person who believes this is Lara Jean and that’s an issue that goes so much deeper than the events of the second book or movie. Lara Jean is a typical teenage girl who falls prey to one of the most natural and self-destructive tendencies of being human. Comparison. Before she and Peter are together, before they are even pretending to date, she has Gen up on a pedestal. She compares herself to this girl constantly and always finds herself lacking. This mentality only intensifies as she develops feelings for Peter and begins a real relationship with him. Even before Peter has given her a legitimate reason to be jealous or insecure, she is already comparing the two relationships and assuming he must be doing the same. And since she finds herself to be less, she assumes Peter must too. She also makes the mistake of comparing him to every romantic lead in a nick sparks novel. And bless his heart, Peter tries to live up to this ideal with the fancy dinner, the poetry, the locket...but at the end of the day that’s not who he is. He isn’t a great communicator when it comes to his feelings. He phrases important information as jokes because he’s afraid how they’ll be received, or plays them off that way if he regrets putting himself out there. He acts out when he’s scared or hurt. And yes, he takes his sports very seriously because he’s trying to get a full ride to college. But none of these things make him a bad person. Just a flawed one. Lara Jean is equally flawed. From the beginning she’s already insecure and holding Peter to an impossible standard. She questions his feelings and intentions, even before he’s given her reason to. Which makes sense given her near idol worship of the girl and the fact they originally faked their relationship to make Gen jealous and throw Josh off. Then there’s her interactions with John...while there’s nothing wrong with her talking to another boy, she did make a conscious and deliberate choice to mislead Peter when it comes up. She also flirts with John while withholding the information that she is someone’s girlfriend, airs her grievances with Peter to John rather than discussing them as a couple with her significant other, and repeatedly jumps to conclusions about what he’s thinking, feeling, and doing throughout the course of their relationship. The whole point of this story is that falling in love with someone and being in love with someone are not the same. Lara Jean’s only examples of relationships come either through hearsay of her parents marriage or her limited witnessing of Margot and Josh and Peter and Gen (all of these are from the outside and not necessarily accurate representations of what those relationships actually were) Peter’s only example is his parents’ marriage (which ended in divorce and his father leaving) and his only experience is a codependent relationship with a very troubled and manipulative teenage girl. Neither of them knows how to be in a relationship with the other so they learn through trial and error. The same way we all do. Both Lara Jean and Peter take turns unintentionally disrespecting their relationship, feeling threatened by outsiders with previous history (because what Gen is to LJ, John is to Peter. He remembers the spark of excitement she got when he told her about MCClaren regretting not asking her to the dance, which he then played off as a joke even though it wasn’t because it hurt him to see her so happy about it when he was already falling for her. He teased her about being a player and going after John before their fake relationship was even over, he sees how much they have in common and how John is better at all the aspects of the relationship he feels like he’s failing at, and he saw the shock on Johns face when he found out they were together. He knows LJ didn’t tell him about them.) The only major difference is that when Peter is hurt or scared, he lashes out and when Lara Jean is she runs. She isn’t Peter’s victim and he isn’t hers. They both contributed to their obstacles and both realized and owned this by the end of the book and movie. You keep saying it wasn’t realistic because she and John clicked or had more in common, but she was already in love with someone else when John came back into her life. He could have been the most perfect guy in the entire world and it wouldn’t have made a difference because her heart was already taken. Lara Jean runs out of fear. This was established in the first movie and the first book. John was just a tempting place to run, a road untravelled. Everybody has those. There’s nothing unrealistic about that.

And by the end, LJ realizes this and makes her peace with it. It is unhealthy for her to compare relationships, but that was neither Peter’s fault, nor in his control. John didn’t volunteer at Bellview in the book. Stormy is his grandmother and she guilts him into attending. After that he only comes because of Lara Jean. It’s not a sign of cosmic connection. Lara Jean wasn’t in love with John in sixth grade. He was just a pretty fantasy and a convenient one since he was moving away and there was no danger of anything ever happening between them. In the book it’s made clear LJ chooses boys she feels are unobtainable because she prefers fantasy over reality and by the end of the second book she admits that’s all John is...a fantasy and a possibility. She admits yes, she could fall in love with him but even that wouldn’t change how she feels about Peter. He’s in her heart and won’t leave. I get why people like John. I like him too. But we only ever see him in a positive light. He makes no mistakes. None of his flaws are shown. That’s a very surface level impression of who he actually is, which we as readers and viewers never get the chance to see. Peter isn’t perfect. But he’s a good guy and his love for Lara Jean is very real, as is his commitment to her. And ultimately she decides that means more to her than anything she and John *might have* become.
