Instead of using the Reflector app on another computer, I hooked up my iPad via cable to a computer monitor and I get the iPad image on the monitor and without any lag.

Does connecting with HDMI rather than Reflector SW mitigate the lag? Brilliant app and thanks for the awesome tutorials! I wish all developers were as thoughtful as you! They would sell a lot more SW! Great work!

It depends on the HDMI connector. I bought a cheap one from Amazon and it had horrible lag. But, I have heard that the Apple branded one is excellent. This is according to folks who have used it and reported back on our Facebook group. The Apple version is a bit pricey, but it certainly is simple!!!

Hi Pete, l tried your setup and found it really difficult to draw on the paper from my laptop. On the video you don’t do any drawing just say start from the eyes, did not demonstrate the drawing is this why it’s so hard ? Or l’m l missing something!
@CameraLucidaApp
@CameraLucidaApp 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. Maybe I should have kept drawing - but it seemed like the video was already running long for time! If you're having trouble drawing this way, my guess (and it's just a guess) is that the lag you're seeing is too high. I personally can only tolerate about a 1/3rd second lag. Your tolerance may vary. There are lots of ways of reducing lag, but the most important is to make sure that both devices are connected as solidly as possible to the same WIFI network. The other factors include competing network traffic and the quality/speed of your hardware. Please keep in mind that the same technique can be used with AirPlay with an AppleTV or by using an HDMI adaptor cable. (Actually, you can even use QuickTime with a device plugged into your computer to mirror the display.) If there was another reason causing the difficulty, please don't hesitate to contact me directly from within the app, ok?

I don't recommend any single-armed stand. I find that they always droop over time and as soon as you tap the screen they start to bounce. The stands that have multiple legs are much, much better. The stand my son and I made in one of the tutorial videos only uses "one leg", but it's using pipes which don't move at all.

Hi, just wondering if using your attached mirror technique and the front camera and mirroring the iPad screen to a large display or TV would be ergonomically easier to set up and draw on larger papers?
@CameraLucidaApp
@CameraLucidaApp 3 жыл бұрын
While the answer depends on the hardware you own, my opinion is that if you're going to the trouble to output your device's screen display to another monitor, then you owe it to yourself to use the rear camera. The rear cameras are always of much higher quality than the front cameras - even in the Pro and Air iPad models with their better front cameras.
@allanpennington
@allanpennington 3 жыл бұрын
@@CameraLucidaApp That makes sense. I had wondered about the resolution differences between front and rear cameras. I have an iPad Pro 9.7” with 12‑megapixel Wide rear camera so it’s very good. The front is only 5-megapixel. In addition I can record 4K vid with the rear camera. Not sure if that’s applicable when you get the App to record whilst you are drawing?

Not that I'm aware of. If you had some other kind of laptop or desktop to act as an AirPlay server, you could. Unfortunately, I know of no easy to to send the video of one iOS device to another iOS device without having a third app acting as a middle man.

Using another iOS device to mirror won’t, unfortunately, work. If you don’t have a laptop or desktop computer, you can use an Apple TV with your TV or an HDMI output dongle on your iOS device. If you go the single route, be aware that my experience shows the cheap aftermarket ones add a ton of lag. I’ve been told the Apple branded ones work well.

Hi Pete, I have been using your genial application Camera Lucida for 4 years. I would like to use the feature showed in this KZfaq video, but I don’t have a Macbook, I have 2 laptops with Windows. Since 1. I am not fully aware of technical issues, and 2. I try to understand the English/American language (I am French), I am not sure that I understood your demonstration properly, but I assume that I could install the application Reflector on my laptop and so connect it with my iPad Pro. Is it correct? If yes, can I also transfer the function keys in the Camera Lucida to my laptop keyboard?
@CameraLucidaApp
@CameraLucidaApp 5 жыл бұрын
Alphonsine, while I don't think you can use the keys on your keyboard to control your iPad, you can certainly run the Reflector app on your Windows computers. I haven't tried it, but I know from experience that you should make sure your home wifi is as fast as possible to minimize lag. You know, it *might* be possible to use your laptop as a bluetooth keyboard for your iPad - perhaps another viewer could comment on the possibility if they have ever heard of doing this! Wish I spoke French!

Hi Pete, I watched the video twice as I didn't catch on the first time around. I do have a question maybe two, I looked for the Camera Lucida App and it said it only works with iOS on iPad or iPhone to and Android, Windows, Amazon Fire TV, and some others. Why Can I not (or how can I) use this with my Samsung Phone or Tablet, I also have HD Fire Tablet and TV as well as Chromecast, and Windows Laptop. I do have a few other tablets but everything I have is Android.

The Camera Lucida app only runs on iOS. I do not have any Android or Windows version of this. Some websites pick up my app and add incorrect details and keywords such as "Android" to get more traffic. But, sorry, Camera Lucida definitely won't run on Android.

So what is the largest piece you can do with the app? Could you do are closer to 36 x 48 or larger?
@evilAshTheDog
@evilAshTheDog 6 жыл бұрын
If you are using the technique in this video, there are few limits. One person in our facebook group sets up a camera across the room and works on 3D sculpture with the app. It requires some creativity to figure out how to place the camera above (or in front) of your canvas, but it's not particularly difficult. Without mirroring to another display, I find the practical limitation is about 14" in the largest dimension because any further and I can't draw and see my screen at the same time.

@evilAshTheDog
@evilAshTheDog 4 жыл бұрын
@@lourdesrosenberg7302, I just sent you and email... and notice you posted here. So, I'll paste the important factors. Each one of the following things will help to ensure you're getting the largest final drawing possible: To maximize the size of your drawing, do these things: 1) Before you hit the "hand holding the pencil" button, make sure the image you want to draw is filling the screen. Pinch to zoom, rotate, etc. 2) Put your camera as far away from your drawing surface as is reasonably possible. 12" inches should result in a 12" drawing. (Roughly) 3) In the iOS settings page for Camera Lucida, set the "Camera Quality VS Lag" to "Photo" and set the "Image Preview Fill Mode" to "Fit".

@evilAshTheDog

Al, you are correct - and it would also be completely understandable to ask, "Why not?!?!". At the heart of the problem is that the feed from an iOS camera consists of a compressed video stream. This video compression allows Apple to send the image wirelessly to other devices via AirPlay with a reasonable lack of lag. However, from a programming standpoint, iOS doesn't provide the compressed video stream to us developers - when we access the camera, we get a frame by frame view that is uncompressed. For us to create a wireless transmission of those video frames, we have to recompress the stream. Doing this isn't particularly difficult, but it unfortunately adds far too much lag to be useful within Camera Lucida. I've tried reducing the image resolution which indeed reduces lag, but suddenly you don't have the image clarity the app needs. This is why apps that transmit video successfully are more akin to baby monitors. I continue to keep up on the tech and am hopeful that there will be a good solution for this issue in the future. I should point out that the newest hardware (iPad Pros, for example) have awesome chipsets that could make this more practical soon.
