I met Bogdan today. Bogdan washes windows for over 25 years now. He seems to enjoy it. So I asked him for a portrait.
Walking in the footsteps of a giant, I make Richard Avedon's iconic style - the black and white portrait on a white background - mine, for this personal project that starts with the portrait of a worker right in front of my home in Berlin/Germany.
This series was floating around in my head for years now and Bogdan was the face that finally got me on the road.
In the video I explain why this group of people is especially interesting for me and show you the behind the scenes of the photoshoot, as well as the final photos together with my thoughts on them.
I hope you enjoy the video and if so leave me a little greeting in the comments.
Gear used:
Large Format Camera: CHAMONIX C45F-2 4x5"
Large Format Lense: Schneider-Kreuznach APO-Symmar 5,6/180 MC + COPAL - No. 1
Tripod: Benro A2680TB1 Kit
Film: Fomapan 400 9*12cm in TOYO Holders
Scanner: Epson V850 wet mounted with the betterscanning adapter + Silverfast Ai Studio 8.8
filmed on a Sony A7III with a Tamron 28-75 2.8, light by Westcott Flexlight, edited in Davinci Resolve

With the white background it certainly reminds me of the Avedon work that you referenced, but when I think of large format portraits of everyday workers in Germany I admit that my first thought is August Sander. Nicely done!

I am so glad to have found this video. It made my morning tea so much better. Please go on with this series, present us more people and their stories. Through video, photography, and your narration. I respect your appreciation for Avedon, however, I would personally choose an approach without the backdrop and let their environment speak too. But that is a personal choice. Please, do continue.

@@ChrisMarxen : Fantastic, Chris. I do something similar, here in Paris. Funny coincidence: I carry a very tiny 4x5 monorail camera in my carry sack (it's a Toho, now out of production). Absolutely lovely work! Often I find myself succumbing to ADHD brain and skipping through videos to just see the final photos, but I felt no desire to do so here; your storytelling is captivating and inspiring. It's fascinating thinking about how a photographer relates to the subjects they ordinarily work with, and I found your insights into the differing perspectives/personality types of your usual clientele compared to Bogdan really interesting. I'm not used to shooting portraits, in the past few years I've been focused on infrared landscapes, but I've become increasingly interested in this sort of thing; seeing videos like this is incredibly motivating with regards to shooting portraits of strangers, and I feel inclined to try sometime with my RB67.

Hello Chris ... what a story!!! Just love it!!! I just discovered you based on a KZfaq search on Chamonix 45F-2 large camera, which I ordered, and I should receive it sometime in August. But regardless of the camera, the story you told us, about an ordinary day, someone washing windows/entry doors… is really moving and well explained by you!!! The photograph of Bogdan is very well executed, really an excellent portrait!!!! (Which film did you photograph on? ) Please bring more of this type of context to us 😊 Greetings from Ontario Canada (I'm a Polish guy) Darek J.
