The most consistent I've found (but can't get anymore) are Tula primers, stupid hard cups though. As far as the primer comparison, Mic McPherson did a huge test showing which primers were hotter, consistent, etc.

The way things are now if you can get your hands on any primers you better grab them up. All the stuff going on has ammo and reloading supplies in short supply.

When fire forming new brass my SDs are almost always terrible regardless of the brass brand or caliber. For that reason, I don't put a lot of stock in the initial velocity readings. However, on the second firing I know I'm going to get the headspace and neck tension I want.
@BoltActionReloading
@BoltActionReloading 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that fire forming is not the ideal time to test, but you have to do it sometime. (keep in mind though the brass is only growing about .003 with our first firing too) I also think that the results are not an accident. This is mostly to pick a path. When we get to the next stage and lower SD's are achievable we know we picked correctly. If not pick a new path.

Good video and information. I load my 7.62 x 39 . Tried some Tula using a couple different powder. And use some rem large primers and had much better grouping than Tula . So primers can make a big difference. Thanks for your videos

Varget is a bit fast burning for 30-06, IMR & H4350 is a lot better suited. I used to use Varget, until I tried the better suited powders. S&B primers look to be great! Thanks!

I have had better Sd's with H4350 no doubt, but slightly better accuracy from Varget. I wanted to find a better primer so I don't have to choose.

The primers have pressure signs. We only use 44.9 grns for a 150 grn bullets. Thats shoots a consistent 2800 with a 22 inch barrel. Maybe my teacher thought me Wrong but he said never have primers like yours????? Can you explain that.

Why no CCI primers???? for small rifle, the Remington 7 1/2 is best in all I have ever tried, but in large rifle, either Federal 210M or CCI BR-2 or standard CCI primers rain supreme, and you do not have either of them. I have never had luck with any Winchester primers. WE had a gun shop that only dealt in match rifles, and the only primers he carried were Federal 210M's, CCI standard and BR-2, and Remington 7 1/2 primers.

I would be really interested to see some study of primers versus altitude. With the lower levels of oxygen at which I live (7,200) I suspect that I should be using magnum primers where others use normal primers. I think my loads need the extra kick in the butt for full oxidation.
@endutubecensorship
@endutubecensorship 2 жыл бұрын
From what I understand your altitude from sea level makes a difference in air density, effecting how the projectile flies through thinner air. Powder contains it's own oxygen supply, thats how you can fire under water for example.

Great video, as usual! ! I also have QuickLoad (QL) and something I'm seeing on a given load is that case volume will have an effect. I'm see a difference of + or - 1 gr/H2O on the Starline brass I'm using. Have you volume tested any of that Lapua, and if so, how did it look?

I managed to find a few hundred CCI 7.62 nato primers and I've heard they're a hotter then normal large rifle primer so that got me wondering if they could be used in place of magnum primers???

Hi! Question: If you find good combination of powder and primer. How much this "good finding" can be effected with change of bullet? or change of brass? would you say it is rather universal or if I find good combination when test are done with Hornady 155 gr. it can not be taken into Scenar L? of course I understand that amount of powder will change for different weight... but will good combination of powder and primer stay? thanks in advance for answering. This is really great channel. regards
@BoltActionReloading
@BoltActionReloading 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, as far as charge weights they will change with the projectile. As far as the powder primer combo I would assume that they would still play together well. (at least that has been my finding)

I would like either a video or your comments on a situation where you have only one primer available to you. Then how do you select the right rifle powder based off the test results of the first powder you selected?
@BoltActionReloading
@BoltActionReloading 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Wes, This is a very interesting topic with probably not the clearest answer. Any chance you have a specific application that you are interested in? Varget has been one I have struggled to find ultimate consistency of ignition with, but I am thinking of doing some neck tension testing to see how this affects it as well. I have always been a proponent of trying a few different ones and see what works best, but its not exactly practical at this point.

Just like your, I want the most accurate load. Unlike your other videos where the Primer is the variable. What about the powder as the variable and the primer as the constant?

Because you had what you consider sub optimal results with CCI primers in the past is no reason not to include them in the head to head test here. Also, which primers did you use? I’ve achieved an SD of 4+ with Varget, Lapua brass, SMK 168gr projectiles and CCI benchrest primers in my MDT ESS Savage 308.
