My guess is, like so many other manufactures. They are just jumping on the off-road trailer pricing bandwagon. Are some of the trailers out there justifiable in terms of price, probably. But I’d say the majority of them right now in 2023 are inflated, just because they can. Well, maybe I’m exaggerating a little bit. The supply chain issue has really impacted things. But has it impacted it that much?

Being a baby boomer with an interest in overlanding this trailer hits all the right notes. My wife likes room and comfort and we are at a point in our lives where we can seriously consider investing in something like this. Taking the weight and price out of the conversation, I LIKE this design. Well thought out space and basic needs as well as visually easy to live with. It's sturdy and I like all the materials. Storage is significant and easy to get to. When I look at all the Van's on the move right now, this is not much different. Plus you can disconnect from the tow vehicle. Thans for the review Drew. It’s always great to see alternative installations to address challenges and problems. I love the molly racks and may try to incorporate some into my F150 mods. My Hiker trailer is just about mod’ed out. The new sapele mohognany side table and drawer is adding more weight than I expected but its fit, form, and function will be sweet. Practical? No, but I enjoy trying new setups.

Your modded out Hiker sounds so fun! You may come to find like us, that weight isn’t as strong of a factor as we thought it was. I had such difficult experiences when towing heavier Teardrops I used to blame it on weight. But since the last couple of years, I have towed a lot of heavy teardrop trailers and had a good experience. I am realizing it was the aerodynamic issues that was really hindering my towing. I am interested to hear an update from you if the weight had any impact.

I always appreciate the tight focus of your reviews. While there are several cons to this one, I look at it as another example of a manufacturer making a solid effort, price notwithstanding, to fillo that kinda narrow (to my understanding anyway) overland niche. I would think that if you were a 'serious' over-lander, you would have a 3/4 ton 4x4 truck or equivalent as your tow vehicle. That means a lot of gear can ride in the bed or the rear. That is certainly where the inflatable kayaks and SUPS would ride... Looking forward to your next review.

This is a nice layout. After running a couple of overlanding trailers I see at least two issues with the trailer. One is the height of the trailer. It is really tall. High center of gravity is something that we avoid as much as possible while off-roading and overlanding. This thing looks very tippy. If you go tall, you need to go wide to maintain balance. Very dangerous on off-camber trails. Second issue is the placement of the bike racks. The bikes are going to take damage from road debris. It would be better to mount them on the rear receiver. Also electric bikes are very heavy, which will add a lot of tongue weight onto the towing vehicle’s hitch and also affect the payload. Next is the price. I know that off road trailers are getting more expensive each year (we spent about $40k on a loaded Mission Overland rig in 2021). Now that trailer is $50k+. When I compare the build quality and features between our rig and this Lance, I just cannot under any circumstance justify spending $70k+ on this. The weight is also a major issue. Our trailer is under 2500lbs loaded and wet. I believe this trailer, although a nice design, is actually very limited in its foreseen capability. Great for flat roads and campgrounds.
@arkos55
@arkos55 Жыл бұрын
I agree this design has some serious flaws for off-roading. In addition to the height, the frame and tongue extension do not look robust enough for anything beyond smooth dirt roads. I would bet money some of the tongues break in a few years. Compare against some real off-roaders and this chassis looks pretty weak. Curt suspension is low brow for this price point and the lock n roll is junk. Not much power for that price either. Bikes on the front are actually a much better idea than in back. Sway on the back can damage racks and is way more of a problem for sway than extra weight on the tongue. Protecting them from debris is easy with covers or an add on screen. See the Boreas EOS for this kind of trailer done right. More expensive, but not that much more, and way better built with much higher quality components. This looks more like a $50K trailer in comparison.

@Chubbydippin Жыл бұрын
Wow, that's a big change for Lance. Seems well built for this company. Looks as though it will hold up and last longer than other trailers they've made. It's too expensive, too tall, too heavy and too long for me. A smaller/lighter version should be offered too. Do we really need that tongue box, exterior storage and height? Shorter trailers, both in height and length, are better for non paved and rougher dirt and trail roads. Roughing it in the outdoors requires making do with less as part of the appeal. The ability to bring that much Extra Stuff because all the storage is not really experiencing the outdoors. More like bringing the indoor comforts of home to the outdoors. I do love the build materials and the suspension though. For 75k, the roof should be completely covered with solar panels and the 2nd battery included as part of that hefty price. Hopefully they build a smaller, less tall and less long version for a overall lighter and easier towable experience. Thanks Drew. We all know you'll give us the practical breakdown and PRICE!! Most all of the trailer segments I see NEVER give even a price range for some shady and slick car salesman reason.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Жыл бұрын
I really appreciate the breakdown you did here. Like you said, I picture a similar version, but much more paired down may be a better fit for most people. Hi Drew. I took one look at this rig and came up with the same negatives you did. If you bought this and had the heavy duty truck to pull it, you could drive a sports car and stay at the Hilton and save money. I just got back from Colorado and I thanked my lucky stars I didn't take Little Red, my tiny trailer, as I got down a well known, to me, dirt track about a mile along a ridge on one side and a drop-off on the other. I hit a snow drift across the road and had to back up along that narrow track. I was sure it would be snow free as it was in a clear sunny spot but the drift must have been very deep in it's day. Now image this huge rig out there. The weight plus anything you add and 40 gallons of water, plus 30 gallons for gray water...that combined weighs as much as Little Red. It does look well made but it's like having an elephant for a pet. Not too practical. Thanks for showing what's going on in the industry and another fine review.

I love your analogy about having an elephant for a pet! So good 😊 i’m actually up on a ridge right now looking for a campsite and to get cell coverage for this video. I just called my wife and said I did something stupid, I should be fine, but here’s my location. In my defense, I did walk the trail for about an hour up here before driving it. But man it sure looks different now that I’m in the vehicle. 😂

No need for a heavy duty trucks to tow this. It's pretty obvious to me it's meant for the midsize truck or large SUV market not Jeeps or 2-3k tow limit vehicles. Do I think it's wise to exclude Jeep while claiming to be catering to the off-road hills? No, but a Taco, Ranger, Frontier or Colorado can all handle this without issue. An HD truck is unnecessary and the midsize market is a pretty huge market to play in. Why not offer them something more if their vehicles are capable enough to handle it.

I think this is a fair and accurate assessment. I know some hunters that would like this rig, which could also be used for family vacations. I do like the use of materials and construction and many of the exterior features. I love that the Rep was honest about the off-grid AC run time. There really are a lot of awesome things about this trailer, and he covered them well. But let's be honest, a swing away rear spare is not ideal. It's normally dirty and generally in the way while camping. I do like the solar/power system and many of the interior features, although some of the Molle use looks gimmicky and impractical. It's obviously going to be in the way for loading a cubby and will not prevent items from falling out while off-roading. A big unmentioned Con is the ridiculous galley height. I think the stove and countertop would be a real hazard around kids. Due to the size and weight I would not qualify it as a serious "off-road" trailer. It is restricted to wide open spaces... paired with a matching tow vehicle the combined tuning radius would be a very limiting factor as well. Can you imagine coming to a washout, or snow drift... and having to execute a 3-point turn? I don't see the point of having advanced suspension, excessive ground clearance, and the off-road hitch on this size of trailer, unless it's targeted at posers. Someday I may need to dial down our primitive area travels and buy a fully self-contained RV. But, I'll be looking for a more practical design based on honest expectations of its use.

This looks like a great trailer, and Drew is right about it in many ways but it seems to me to be targeted to well off Raptor owners who live within driving distance of places near Moab. The fact that you really need a $60k plus truck to pull this makes it kind of limits for those of us with lesser vehicles. Still and all, I applaud Lance for stepping up.
@PlayingwithSticks

When somebody told me Lance did this I kind of laughed. Meaning, I thought it was going to be junk. But then I did a deep dive into Lance. I knew they were a good company, but they were better than I thought. I found out that during Covid. They were the only large RV manufacturer that actually decreased production. Meaning, they were unwilling to put out inferior products at a faster rate during all the supply chain issues and high Trailer demand. That caught my attention.
@JohnInfante83
@JohnInfante83 Жыл бұрын
I think this camper is targeted at two types of people. The first is serious overlanding folks who want to be able to take a trailer into a remote area and use it as a basecamp for off-roading. They don’t need a toy hauler trailer because the tow vehicle IS the toy too. Toyota Tacoma, Jeep Gladiator, and half-ton pickups can all tow this trailer. Take this in on a forest service road, set up camp, and hit the trails. The other group are full-timers who want to stay off-grid. The size, the comfort, the customizability, the power system, the water capacity, all speaks to me of something that someone might live in if they want to spend a decent portion of their time out in BLM land or similar. It’s definitely a niche product, but that niche definitely exists and this will compete with something like Black Series trailers but be a more off-the-lot option with many more dealers stocking them since Lance is such a big brand.

I think they were going for a european/austrailian "Euro market" feel with it, esepcially given the name Enduro. OMG... I just found the survival pod of campers... LOL. It’s tough, because there really isn’t a competitor, offering a trailer that will stand up to the conditions. There’s a lot of crossover from the large RV industry into the off-road market, but Lance is the only one I’ve seen that doesn’t look like it’s going to fall apart in two years. Typically, I say for years, but going off road, will break them down much quicker. I’m right with you, I think most people will find alternatives to suit their needs better.

Something I’d like to see (that I have never seen) in an RV is lots of small coat hooks around the tops of the walls of the shower space. If I’m out in the rain, I want someplace to hang all my wet clothes overnight or while I’m driving to the next location. The shower space is that obvious location.

There are a lot of things hanging under the trailer exactly where you don't want them off road that will break. the bike rack is very nice and the tongue design looks like it allows for very sharp turns. Gopower electronics is very sub par. The truma combi is a very nice little unit. So glad they went without a black tank. The rack on top is very cool but it's so tall I'm not sure how practical putting kayaks would be using his example. The net in the kitchen is thoughtful for bugs. The molly racks everywhere is a nice touch. The 12v AC is great. you don't have to be plugged into shore power to use it but the reality is that you'll at least need a generator. They said it'll run 3-4 hours on the 2 batteries...yeah if you don't use power for anything else. It will tow as tall as it looks and storage will be a concern. Overall a bit of a mixed bag. strong pros strong cons but it will surely be perfect for someone :)

Great question. The family content will be back soon. Not a lot of people know this, but we’ve been homeless for over two years now. That is by choice though. It’s been a pretty wild transition the last couple years. A little over two years ago we moved to Thailand full-time. It’s been a blast, but hard to balance KZfaq and our new life overseas. During the summer months we spend the entire time camping as a family. I have made videos within the small camper community. But as for our family camping, I’ve tried to keep that as KZfaq free as possible. Essentially just to keep a healthy life balance during these periods of rest. We just moved to a new schedule that will start this year where we will be six months in Thailand, and six months in the States. We finally have a place to call home again, we’re getting our feet back on the ground and we are missing those moments of filming our KZfaq adventures. So we’ve already started this summer shooting little bits and pieces here and there. I’m excited to get that kind of content back on the channel again.

With something like 3 million pickups sold (from 1/2 to 1 ton) my guess is that there will be a market for this. I personally daily drive a 3/4 ton pickup and this wouldn't be an issue towing this. The price is a different story but it is Lance and I wouldn't expect anything different. Implying that everybody can only drive and only own small vehicles is the reason why things never change because we can't believe that somebody else may have different needs. At the same time I'm not saying that the market will be huge but 1% of 3 million is 30,000 different parties. I think there is at least a few people out there that will want this.

@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Жыл бұрын
😂 Yes Lance. I felt I needed to give them a nod for a good job. So many people in the large RV industry have tried to cross over and have failed miserably. I think Lance didn’t fail, but like I said, definitely some head scratches. I originally looked into this camper because it was our most requested camper from viewers. I couldn’t understand why they wanted me to check it out. I think folks wanted to know, is it actually good? Components, yes, build quality. Yes, functionality… some parts of it make sense. I see you have a question mark on quality and components. Unless you’re seeing something that I’m not, this camper shares, not just similar, but the same components as many of the high-end overlanding Trailers. And as for the build quality, we’re talking steel chassis, aluminum and composite materials. At least from the outside it looks like they didn’t cut any corners. Like I mentioned, they probably needed to cut some corners here and there because that’s why the trailer turned out the way it did. Regardless if this trailer says Lance on the side or some new hipster mom and Pa trailer manufacture name, I approach this as unbiased as I could. As you know, I am not a big fan of the large RV industry, so it was hard going in without any biases. And I agree with you those Molle panels are pretty neat. I’ve been playing around with them a lot the last year. It’s really fun changing them out and making them fit whatever adventure you’re going on.

Like you said, it looks like they took a whole bunch of the best features of other campers but I reckon that's this camper's biggest problem - the individual aspects don't add up to a cohesive whole that feels well thought-through. I wish them all the best but I don't know that there is a niche for a heavy (and probably a bit top-heavy) 3m high off-road capable camper with an outside kitchen but no covered outside living area, probably because an awning would be mounted impractically high. Now that I think of it, how are people of average height supposed to reach the kitchen shelves? Something unexpected that I learnt from this video: The sound of rain on metal irritates me and it would drive me crazy if I couldn't escape it 😁

I picked up on that sound too in the edit. Some like rain on a tin roof, like you, I found I do not. @PlayingwithSticks Жыл бұрын
Good point. Most of us try to stay within the 80/20 rule. Mainly for safety, but also for wear and tear. We often caution people that just because something is within your towing capacity, doesn’t mean it’s the right fit. I think with the jeep you’re right, it would be easily within a comfortable range. But the Ford Explorer once you throw in the wood, the 40 gallons of water, the bikes you would be pushing it on the lower models of the explore. But if you use the top model at a 5600 towing capacity you would be right at the 80% mark. Which again like you said, you are right on about these two vehicles. Thanks for bringing this up.

When towing 20 foot long and 10 feet tall "off road" trailers with articulating hitch with short wheelbase mid size suv's especially in mountainous areas one needs to consider sway. Sure the suv' s mentioned are on paper okay to tow the Lance tow capacity wise. But with out a sway bar (not a good idea with articulating hitch) this ten foot tall trailer his going to sway and gas mileage is going to plummet trust me. I have a new lexus gx 460 with 6,500 pound towing capacity. I pull my Trail Marker off road trailer which is 3,800 pounds loaded to max and 9 feet tall with lexus and would not feel comfortable pulling the Lance at 10 feet tall , 20 feet long and 4,500 pounds. I did end up setting up to hitch systems. One for freeway ( curt sway bar) and one for off road ( ARK Articulating hitch).

Price doesn't reflect the build. I would have to take your word for it at the build quality is good. It does look like it has adjustable spring rate for its suspensions. The AC unit is anywhere from 23 to 27 hundred dollars itself. From zooming in it looks like it is a powder coated frame. With good welds. Even the faucet looks to be of good quality. There's a lot of places I couldn't tow it due to height, let alone the wait. My Jeep would never be able to pull that of any Highway mountains. And yes, my Jeep isn't rated for that weight. hey drew.. It me. To me this has the feeling of a 3 season camper, which kind of shocks me, little things like, only having a bug net between galley and front, to me i'd want at min a canvas cover as well, allowing you to close it off if you are running the AC or heat... and at best, a 3 layer canvas, insulation, canvas with zipper seal flaps. Next, the galley door needs to be set up with increased loading capacity OR have the ability to slope... i'd be really worried about snow loading and water runoff. that said, the ability to attach a fly net at canvas tent around that door is missed. this is something they should have designed from the start, and worked with a manufacturer or 2 to come up with a design that could be sold with or as and add on. being able to "enclose" the cooking area from both bugs, rain, and snow.. "Who is this camper for." My first call on that, hunters. This kind of camper, with the modular racks, huge seal-able storage upfront, etc. It fits hunters. You can drive your truck in to the hunting area, detach and set up the camper, then continue on up trails or such with the truck. Leaves the truck bed free to load the kill, and bring it back to the camper for processing and then storage in the steel box. that steal box is gonna likely be bear proof. Next, truck bed camper. Ok picture combining this trailer, with one of the small lightweight truck bed campers. A small bear bones bed camper, with 2 beds little Little tv, and such... you put the kids in there, 2-3 kids can sleep in there, while the adults sleep in the trailer with the trailer then being set up as the kitchen and and such. That big storage box again, likely could fit a break down wheel chair, as well as hitch mounted universal wheelchair mounts. no cabinines and the ability to mount items low... makes this a likely option for disabled users. Who its for is for the creative users who can see beyond the norms. Like you, Drew.

Hi love the idea of truck camper with trailer. I have often thought van with trailer, but I like the truck camper even better. And I was going to jump in that front box for people to see how big it was, I wish I remembered it. You were absolutely right a wheelchair could fit in there, literally all your big game could fit in there once you field dress it. That thing is HUGE! And hunters again you nailed it with that one. That didn’t even cross my mind when I was making this. I thought the same thing about the bug fly. But then I just assumed they probably had something for the colder seasons to replace it. I’ll have to look into that. As usual your post is so spot on.

@@PlayingwithSticks the 2 groups that really like and need "modular systems" Hunter/military because gear can be in so many different sizes and shapes that it won't fit in a "box". and Disable because they may need things lowered or raise. Lets also note this trailer is AC optional and no heater. Also when buttoned down you have access to the sink and fridge but not the burners. This means you WILL need a portable camp stove for cooking, AND a heater. a 2-In-1 Portable Butane Heater & Stove might be an option, if its not to cold. Buddy heater if you are doing late season camping, or a full vin Diesel heater for all winter. I think the real thing here is in the naming though. ENDURO. @PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Жыл бұрын
I think about this AC thing a lot. When I’m in a small, well, insulated trailer, like the Bean. I think to myself, how much AC would I actually need. Meaning, if I was in somewhere like Florida, where it was needed. I often wonder would it work to just turn it on 20 minutes at a time to drop that temp. And then after that, how long would it relatively hold that temp? Because really this is what we do in the winter with heaters. One of these days I will have to put it to the test. We travel most of the time in 90 to 100° temperatures, but the nights get so nice and cool up here in the mountains. We’ve never even thought about the need for something like this. But the longer we have the channel, the more we realize people want an AC solution for off grid living.

@@PlayingwithSticks In South Florida, temps don’t drop below 80 during the summer and humidity is 80% or higher at night. Running the AC for an hour or two will guarantee condensation and mold. It won’t keep it cool enough, long enough to matter in an off grid situation. It might be more viable in dry climates where nighttime temps drop. But if you use up your battery stores late in the day it will take much of the following day to recharge…assuming full sun. We need lower power consumption units and more efficient solar solutions to make AC a truly viable system in off grid camping in hot & humid locales.

Right! I had to look up a Jeep the second I saw that. I was actually surprised how low that towing capacity was on the 2023 jeep. I didn’t realize how big a difference there is between different jeep models.
