This is how it was in the mid sixties when I was a kid. My dad was a member of a 4 man team that travelled and competed. They had 24 real hours enduro with lights off, and weather obstacles. I sat in for my dad at 14 and set the world record for 220ft track for my age. This was very technical in making the cars from piano wire from scratch. Custom winding the armatures to make a motor faster, shaving down tires and mixing STP for traction. Modifying controllers to change braking, heat transfers, handles, etc. REALLY FUN TIME!

Nice track. I used to belong to a club like that in 1966 with my dad in Southern California. Many dads worked in aerospace and their companies had slot car race clubs for the family. I wish I could go back to those days as a kid. Learned to build and race. It was great experience and to spend time with my father.

Heading toward the end of 2017 now. Picked up an AFX Super International set and 4 more cars for my daughter... and me for Christmas. She'll love it and we'll have great times setting it up and racing on it. I'm in my mid 30s now, but remember racing on slot car tracks back in the '80s. Good times. Funny how some things change and some things stay the same. Cheers to fond memories and to future ones not yet remembered.

The White Lightning was built by Hasse Nielson for the Centereach Miniature Speedway, located in a shopping mall in Centereach, New York. It had a running length of 242 feet. When that raceway closed the track was sold to the owners of Slots-A-Lot Raceway and was set up at their original location in Little Neck, New York. When Slots-A-Lot moved to their current location in Franklin Square, NY the White Lightning was put into storage. The owners of S-A-L tried to sell the track without success. Eventually the track was disposed of. I raced on that track on a weekly basis for a couple of years, good times.

I am pretty sure dale was the original owner as when i lived in long island when i was about 7 years old i remember seeing this track. in long island back in the late 80s dale moved to Florida in the early 90s and ironically set up shop close to where my family had moved too.

there was a traxxas shop in new orleans that had a pretty big track, but it had terrain between the track so it wasn't clear to see like this one, also had a drag strip for them. and seeing a traxxas nitro hawk, the first "high end" r/c I've seen outside of a toys r us or radioshack, led me to buying an hpi nitro rs4 2 and savage ss when they came out. Late 1960's thru 1970, Champaign Ill., CU Model Raceways had two 1/24 mile scale tracks, i.e. 220ft by 8 lanes; very popular regional racing venue, drawing competitors from St. Louis to Chicago and beyond. Built by Ben F. Harris III and his son, the track record was around 6 seconds the last I was paying attention. Retirees down to 12 yr olds competed head to head, and most built their own cars and mod. the 12v. motors from scratch. I learned tons about designing miniature swinging and sliding weights, floating axles, painting and detailing, but probably should not have been spending scores of hours in the basement corner using lead solder and volatile model glues and paints!

+z1522 +frank costa I, too, raced at Champaign's CU Model Raceways in the late 60's. I also raced at the nearby the Hobby House track in Country Fair shopping center, as well as in Mattoon, Decatur, and Newman, Illinois. I gave it up for awhile in high school, but got re-interested about 1972 while attending Parkland College. At that time Ben Harris Sr. helped me build from scratch a very fast car, which I still have. The track was on the far west side of Country Fair Center, behind what was then a Zayre store. I think a local NBC TV station moved into the same building after CUMR closed. I remember a few guys there...Ben Jr. , Dave McNattin and Fred Koss. I once got a 2nd place finish in a scale INDY 500 there about 1967. The hand controller got so hot it burned my hand.

I remember a Bob nadarski? And a father and son team can't remember what there name is. On the back track was a plaque, was it Koss that held the track record ? I tried to get a home track club for 64 scale, didn't pan out. by the way what is your name and do you still live in Champaign, well I could go on and on ,thanks for the memories and happy 4th

Hi Frank, I thought I had replied to this last week, but I must not have posted it. Anyway, my name is Steve Wilson, and I left Champaign in 1982 and moved to the SF Bay area. I do remember Bob Nadarski by name, but can't recall what he looked like. I also remembered a guy named Sammy Zahn that had a brother or father who also raced.Likely was Fred Koss with his name on the plaque. He always had fast cars. Where do you live now? Many good memories go hand in hand with slot racing. Had to get my old "Harris/Wilson" car out and have a look last weekend.

Way back in the late 60's early 70's there was a track in Ogden UT called Gold Cup Raceway. It was similar in layout to this track. IF I remember correctly (I might not I was 13) it was 265 feet. It was distinguished being made out of fiberglass. The sides of the track were gold metal flake in color. The business and track disappeared in the late 70's.

I remember that track as well. This tracks layout is very similar, but Gold Cup's track was a little different just past the starting area. It shut down when Jay, one of the owners died from a heart problem. His brother Lewis stored the track in his back yard until it was destroyed by the weather. It's too bad, it was a very nice track. I have never seen another just like it.

Ahhh the good ole days in Strong Island. Well the only slot car spot i remember was KT Raceway which i think was in Lynbrook. We used to ride our bikes from Queens in the summer and just watch the cars race in the mid 80's. My crew was into RC Cars, so we primarily hit Trainland on Sunrise Highway or American Hobby in the city, whenever our parents or older siblings accompanied us. On the way back a childhood friend of mines from Trinidad worked at the bike store up the street, and we would all go through there to get parts for our Mongoose, Redlines, and overpriced GT's. Back to the slotcars, the owners were real nice and we would just sit in there and watch them race and maybe rent a track for a bit. One thing I hated about the city back then, was we basically spent our whole childhood playing sports and doing everything in the Island, cause there was " nothing" to do in the city. Great memories, and my kids are into the hobby now

@@danielmack8958 the raceway in Elmsford was owned by Barbara & Lou Del Rosario. They had three tracks, the largest was the same design as the one in this video but a little smaller, 220 feet. The design is called an Engleman named after its designer Stan Engleman. Lou & Barbara called theirs the Nuvolari after the famous race driver Tazio Nuvolari. Those tracks were built in the sixties, I don’t know what happen to them.

They may have a neighbor of mine raced there I think at the time he was a Metalurgical Engineering student at Brooklyn Poly. I got in late at Buzz A Rama on Church ave. Favorite track was "Big Yellow" alt Blue as long as my tires allowed for proper clearance 1/16"

I cant remember how the turn marshals new what lane to put the cars... Or was it a responsibility to memorize car and lane for each race.. I raced very young and only remember how much fun it was.

The track design is called an Englman. Moat Engleman designed tracks were about 220 feet in length some 180 feet. They were very popular in the middle and late 1960's. They took up a lot of square footage and were not money makers. Hence smaller designed tracks became popular for commercial use. It takes a lot of drivers and marshals to run a race on large tracks.
