They tried to use a North Dakotan/Minnesotan accent in the movie, its a combination of Scandinavian, German and Irish dialects from the 19th century. The accent can also be found in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. One of the ladies being interviewed in the bar was also the language coach for the movie. Enjoyed the reaction as usual, looking forward to more.

There was someone who really thought that it was a true story and thought the money was still buried somewhere along the highway. She died looking for something that didn’t exist.

The Coen brothers had bad luck. They wanted a lot of snow for the movie. What they got was the warmest winter in decades. The scene with the two cops talking in the street illustrates this. They are both bundled up for a blizzard, standing in a slushy, melted street.

The Coen Brothers had a little joke with this film, not actually being a true story, but it made so many people really get into the story. The way these people talk is really close to how you would hear them in this part of the world, my ex was from Minnesota and the accent on some words is spot on, yeah.

is it true that a woman, among many who believed it WAS true, went looking for the money, and died doing so? I have heard as much.

I thought it was clever that the Coen brothers claimed that it was a true story since so much of the movie involves the false claims of Mike Yanagita and Jerry. If those characters can't be trusted about the truth of their stories then should we trust the truth of the entire Fargo story itself?

The Coen Brothers make unique movies. Usually quite interesting. My two favorite of theirs are Miller's Crossing and O Brother Where Art Thou. O Brother is much more light hearted and full of great music. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂

@@TheChromanoisethat makes sense with all of the immigration and ease of mobility, speech patterns evolve. My husband is from Mogadishu and moved to Sweden as a teenager. His accent when speaking English is…. Interesting. Like his Somali and Swedish accents had a baby. 😆 Side note, there’s a really cool BBC docuseries posted to KZfaq about the history of the English language. The first episode starts with the fall of Rome and how all these new tribes’ languages morphed into Old English…. Then later how the language moved from the shore (think US or Australia) and branched off (think Gullah or other Creoles)

To see a proper comedy, without any shooting, watch "The Big Lebowski" by the Coen Brothers. And for some serious comedy, do dive into Mel Brooks, like his classic "Blazing Saddles". Also; I'd be curious to see your reactions to the movies from Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick.

Apparently, Jerry knew that Shep Proudfoot was a criminal on parole, so he asked Shep if he knew anyone who could do the kidnapping. Shep recommended the psychotic killer, Gaer Grimsrud, who probably had been in prison with him. Carl Showalter was someone Grimsrud knew, but Shep didn't know him (and said so). Jerry was too stupid to know he was dealing with three hardened criminals, one of them a bona fide psychotic. When I first saw the movie, I thought Grimsrud would definitely kill Showalter sooner or later. Grimsrud, in the scene in the car when he wanted more pancakes, just had that look. All the rest of the disasters were bound to happen, given what these guys were like. Jerry wasn't smart enough to understand any of it. And he was lying both to his father-in-law and the criminals: telling his father-in-law the kidnappers wanted a million dollars, and telling the kidnappers that the ransom was $80,000. It seems as though Jerry was planning to give the kidnappers $40,000 and take off with the rest. Another of the Coens' dark comedies is Raising Arizona. It also involves crime and everything going haywire, but it's much lighter and no one dies. The characters speak with the accent of the southwestern United States. Frances McDormand speaks in that accent as well as she speaks in the Minnesota accent.

This is a parable about the power of love & how it triumphs over evil, in all its forms. A celebration of humanity. Love may not be spectacular, it can be mundane, everyday, commonplace. But it's the only thing that matters.

It seems to me the Cohn brothers don’t romanticize violence in a non-comedy movie. They always make it stupid, brutal, and senseless. It’s not that they do particularly in a comedic movie, but they tend to make it cartoonish then. For me, there’s always an aspect of absurdism, or a view that life is surreal or absurd in all their films. Most of them I absolutely love (especially Raising Arizona, Oh, Brother Where Art Thou, and Blood Simple [the original cut that’s no longer available due to some stupid legal matter that required them to change huge aspects of the film through editing and adding new scenes, making it virtually a completely different movie]), but some I had a hard time caring about what happens to any of the characters, in spite of the technical brilliance that been in all of them (the ones I’ve seen, anyway).

actually its not a true story. the coen bros admitted to this shortly after the film's release. they used the excuse that although this isn't realated to actual specific events something like this must've happened sometime in history. to me that was an act of fraud and that opening statement should be removed from the film. the film is good enough to stand on its own. there's no reason to resort to fraud to sell it! thanks for the video.

the movie's genre is a "dark comedy" with quirky characters and absurd situations. but not so absurd the audience can't relate. in my case, at least, the absurdity of the world is very real and it affects me everyday.
