One common thread through all of the video’s about Bird is that he earned the respect of all the players, whether they were on his team or not. Here was a blue collar type player in a white collar world that by his own admission, never saw color, just came to win, period. We could all take a lesson in that.

I can't honestly recall ever thinking of Bird/Magic as a black/white deal.

Bird was way quicker in his younger days than he is given credit for. He averaged 15+ rebounds a game in the 1981 NBA Finals, he was an excellent athlete. People are putting him in his 1985 and later box, when injuries affected his quickness.

A roommate in college wasn't my equal athletically but after I lost to him in racketball I realized sports was not who was the quickest but the smartest.

He is an extraordinary testament to nature sublimated into nurture. Likely my all time favorite basketball player. He's a deserved hero to many... I appreciate the humanity under it all. I haven’t been able to watch basketball since Bird retired. I am very thankful that I got to live through the Larry Bird vs Magic Johnson era. I feel sorry for everyone who didn’t get to experience it. It was a great time. I wasn’t ready for him to retire. I wanted it to last forever. The Garden was sold out and that included “standing room only” tickets for Bird’s retirement. That tells me a lot of people felt the same way I did. Michael Jordan was a great athlete but it seemed to me he played “ball hog basketball”. It was Jordan and 5 other guys. Not really a team sport like when Magic and Bird played. Bird’s team beat Jordan plus 5 other guys every time in the playoffs. That should speak for itself. To me it seemed like Winning, flashy passing, clutch shooting were more important than statistics. I am so grateful that Bird and Magic existed during my lifetime.

He made other players want to be better. He also shared the ball at a time when others didn't.

I am a Bird fan and being from a small town in Indiana like he was made him a hero. Some people don’t realize how much basketball play a part in our lives here in Indiana. The high school games are always packed with people. Just about every house has a goal and I think almost every barn has one. Larry just made us proud to have a greatness come from these small town barn yards and packed high school gyms the the Boston gardens and championships.

Was an absolute pleasure growing up in Boston watching him play. Learned much from his work ethic and he still inspires me til this day.

The year before Bird joined the Celtics they were 10th in the conference out of 11 teams. The year he joined, they became 1st.

Larry Legend legitimized the three point shot in an era when coaches considered it a joke or novilty shot! Larry is definitely a top 5 all time basketball player, and I may be biased being a Celtics fan, but in my opinion, he's the goat of the 80s. He did everything well, not just shoot he controlled the tempo he created opening for others to shine....while everyone was playing checkers, Larry Bird played chess!

I always appreciated the Bird vs. Magic thing. They don't have things like that in the league anymore ,& it's a shame & the game is truly missing it. The NBA has became to commercialized and it's a product or a brand. I miss the old days & I'm greatful I was able to watch atleast the 90's being I was born in the 80's. MJ was just getting to his prime/peak years when I first remember in like 1991-92 seeing games

The reason I put Bird higher than Jordan is due to Bird's ability to dominate a game withOUT the ball having to be in his hands. Jordan had to have the ball to affect the game. He had to score to dominate the game. Bird could do it passing, rebounding. Worthy said he'd "much rather have to guard Jordan because Bird was so dangerous without the ball." Coming off picks etc.

Part of the Southern Indiana traditions were to go from town to town and play on the outdoor courts. I have many an asphalt/concrete burn and pebbles in my elbows and knees form these encounters. While playing in Orleans one Sunday afternoon, I sprained an ankle, went to the car, wrapped it with an ace bandage and taped it with electrical tape, then played on until dark, drove home to Salem and couldn't walk the next day. The next weekend I was at Scottsburg, playing again. Pickup games were a part of life during and after high school. French Lick was always fun to play because the competition was always great. I well remember Larry as the kid who could keep up with all of us! Those were days of basketball and friends, no color was ever seen except for the white nylon or silver chain nets and orange rims, shirts and skins. If you read this and get Larry to remember, I was the player with the Gold '65 Corvair with 88A1948 as the tag. Thanks, Larry, for letting me have my memories!

Larry could run and jump to the degree necessary. The best all-round basketball player ever. It was not how many points he scored but it was his effect on the team. I really miss watching him play.

The Celtics and Larry's legacy would've been stratospheric and there would've been no dominance from the Bulls in the 90s had Len Bias and Reggie Lewis had a chance to play together with Bird against Jordan and Pippen. History would've been very different.

After Bird and Magic retired I really stopped watching the NBA. Those teams excelled in team basketball. Assists, rebounds, defense, passing, etc. It has now become players who want the rock to shoot. It's an individual, boring game today.

Ik it’s a small/weird thing to take away from this, but his comment about what ppl think of him regarding his first born daughter and ex is something simple, but you don’t hear a lot of ppl say, and if they say it, actually follow through with it. “I know what/who I am so why would I care what other ppl say about me”, that takes an extremely mentally strong person to think and act like that. It’s funny bc he was known for his smack talk and being aggressive on the court, but at the same time he was very quiet, reserved, grateful, modest, etc etc off the court, he genuinely was a great person and a great idol/influence for not only basketball players, but anyone. He thinks about other ppl in his life, he doesn’t do stuff just for the money, he doesn’t care about fame and the theatrics that come with being a pro athlete, just a down to earth guy. I met Larry Bird once back in the mid 90’s. He stood nearly a foot taller than me. I didn’t know who he was or anything about him. One of his friends introduced me and asked if I ever watched basketball. I explained that I was the worst basketball player in school so I never became a fan of the sport and rarely ever watched. After watching this video, I’m a Larry Bird fan. I had no idea who I had the good fortune to meet that day.

no one ever talks about the effect that Len Bias'' death caused in Bird. Bird even stated that the Celtics drafting of Bias would help him in playing less time, resulting in Bird being able to recover & play longer ... how things work out in life

A man is known by his enemies- born, raised and lived in LA for the Magic 80’s. We knew Bird better than ANYBODY. For an entire decade he brought hell to the west coast Lakers - and we hated him for it. Slow, awkward and we STILL couldn’t stop him! We beat ‘em 2-1 in the ‘Ship - but he brought the best out of us.
