Bird was indeed a legend. He got the most out of those around him. He elevated everyone’s game. Give him Magic’s supporting cast and his accomplishments would have been even greater. He didn’t just play hurt, he played when he was broken.

I'm showing my age now, but I had season tickets for the Knicks back un the 1980's. Patrick Ewing was my guy. I was able to watch all the greats of the game including Michael, Magic, Kareem, Isiah, Dominique, Akeem, Bird, Dantley, etc. As impressive as these guys look on youtube, they were 10x more sick when you saw them in real time. The top two I ever saw were Jordan and Bird. Their talent and overall skill set was astonishing to watch. Great vid and reaction dude. Looking forward for more from you...

Larry is the only legend that Jordan played that he never bested. Larry was 6-0 in the playoffs against Jordan. Jordan himself said he was glad to see him retire. Jordan also has said he learned how to trash talk from Larry. One thing Larry had over Jordan is that Larry had instant impact for his team right from his rookie season on. Turned the Celtics around his first year and took them to the playoffs. Then they won the title the very next year. It really was Bird against the league back then and it took the big 3 of the Lakers to take him down in the rivalry they had in the 80s.
@traslenpatterson3478
@traslenpatterson3478 2 жыл бұрын
Well for starters y'all like to use the 6-0 vs Jordan argument without using Perspective or Context, you are ABSOLUTELY right about Bird being 6-0 vs Jordan but I notice how y'all don't bring up these guys 👇 Dennis Johnson HOF'er Kevin McHale HOF'er Robert Parish HOF'er Bill Walton HOF'er ( even though he was past his prime he was still effective with his passing & rebounding ) And the reason y'all don't bring up those guys cause y'all like the sound of Bird being 6-0 vs Jordan to make it look like the teams were on a even scale but in reality Bird had a TON of help and Jordan didn't and not to mention that was in Jordan 2nd & 3rd season. But let's not stop there... Bird said this about Jordan IN HIS BOOK 👇 " It's not that Jordan couldn't win in the 80's, it's just that he didn't have the TALENTED ROSTER that all the other teams had who was winning during that particular time, and thank God he didn't " PERSPECTIVE 👆 But let's not stop there... Magic said this in 87'...." Jordan is the best player in the world, he just don't have the TALENTED ROSTERS that Larry & I myself have " PERSPECTIVE 👆 MEANING 👉 Bird and Magic had a TOTAL UNDERSTANDING that Jordan didn't have the TALENTED ROSTERS they had. And it wasn't Bird against the league cause he had more help then 90% of the league then, the only teams had the talent the Celtics had was the early 80's 76ers with Dr. J, Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Moses Malone......The Lakers with Magic, Kareem, James Worthy, Jamaal Wilks, Bob MaCadoo....or the late 80's Pistons with Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman, and Mark Aguirre. It was really Jordan against the league then.

@@traslenpatterson3478 First let me say that I'm not bashing Jordan. He's obviously one of the greats. I just disagree with your assessment and my opinion is just that the main difference between the playing styles Bird and Jordan had lent themselves to why they were great. Bird didn't need a talented roster to win and his play style elevated his team and made many of them HoFamers. This was evident by his first 2 years with the Celtics on a crappy team when he turned that team around and won his first title. And even with that, none of his teammates you mention he won championships with later against the Lakers were anywhere close to Birds level. My point is that it took, for example, the Lakers to have 3 great players (2 in the GOAT conversation) to beat Larry. The big 3 of the Lakers collectively were much better than the big 3 of the Celtics. The East was far more competitive than the west also and he consistently led his team to championship contention. As for Jordan, he had a slow start in the league because his play style needed more talent around him. Individually he is great but he didn't really elevate his teammates to the level Bird could. In fact, Pippen carried Jordan much of the Bulls title runs in a less competitive era. The quote from Bird is true to an extent, but I believe he was also being polite and respectful of Jordan. Birds talent and skills were more well rounded and in turn played in a way that elevated his entire team with him. But Jordan was for sure a more athletic and great player. I have them both as my top 2 players.

@@traslenpatterson3478 You seem to be taking this as a bash against Jordan. It's not. Jordan became the legend he was after Bird left. He had no chance while Bird was in the league. Jordans own quote was a testament to that. As soon as Bird left, the Bulls were the talk of the NBA. Aside from that, Bird was the one who made others shine on the team. If Bird hogged the ball, he'd have made more than 60 pts in one game. He passed the ball evenly amongst McHale, Parish, Ainge, and Dennis Johnson. He gave them the opportunity to score, which put them in recognition. Make no mistake, Bird was the best player on the Celtics by far.

@@dbsti3006 bro for starters Jordan won 2 championships while Bird was still in the league, Bird didn't retire until 93' so save the narratives. And ONCE AGAIN you're showing NO SENSE OF PERSPECTIVE, when Bird was beating Jordan it was in his 2nd and 3rd year. What y'all fail to realize, after Bird's 6th season in the league his winning was over. And how old are you?...12?.... y'all don't understand simple Perspective, meaning when Bird was beating Jordan even Bird UNDERSTOOD Jordan didn't have the help HE had.....ONCE AGAIN, look at what Bird said IN HIS BOOK 👇 " It's not that Jordan couldn't win in the 80's, HE JUST DIDN'T HAVE THE TALENTED ROSTER THAT ALL THE OTHER TEAMS HAD WHO WERE WINNING DURING THAT TIME, AND THANK GOD HE DIDN'T " PERSPECTIVE 👆 MAGIC SAID THIS IN 87' 👉 " Jordan is the best player in the world, HE JUST DON'T HAVE THE CHAMPIONSHIP ROSTERS THAT LARRY & I MYSELF HAVE " Do y'all NOT understand that 👆 Meaning Bird and Magic had a TOTAL UNDERSTANDING THAT JORDAN DIDN'T HAVE NOWHERE NEAR THE HELP THEY HAD. Bird and Magic BOTH had 4 to 5 HOF'ers on the team with them. Jordan was winning championships WHILE BIRD WAS IN THE LEAGUE, 91' & 92' The way y'all be trying to sale that as if Bird beat Jordan in the playoffs 5 or 6 years straight or something, they only played twice and that was in jordan's 2nd & 3rd season in the league and nothing was gonna stop Jordan from being the legend he became and Bird would be the first person to tell you that.

Then Jordan had the season Jordan had in 87' when averaged 37.1 PPG to go along with 236 steals and 125 blocks. And if that wasn't good enough Jordan had this season season in 88' 👇 ALL DEFENSIVE 1ST TEAM ALL NBA 1ST TEAM ALL-STAR ALL-STAR MVP LEAGUE MVP LEAGUE LEADER IN STEALS ( 259 ) 131 BLOCKS D.P.O.Y SCORING CHAMPION 35.0 PPG 53.5% FROM THE FIELD OH AND HE HAD ( 485 ASSIST THAT SEASON TOO FOR THOSE WHO SAID HE WAS A BALL HOG, HE WAS 15 ASSIST AWAY FROM HAVING 500 ASSIST ON THE SEASON ) SLAM DUNK CHAMPION Or do you want to talk about the season he had in 89' when he averaged 32.5 PPG while averaging 8.0 rebounds and 8.0 assist a game and to add to that Jordan had a Total of 650 assist on the season and not to mention he had more assist in that season then Bird has ever had in any season, the most ASSIST Bird has ever had in a season was the 86'-87' season when he topped out at 566 assist on the season. Larry said this about himself after he retired: "I came into the league a hick, and left a legend!" Loved your reaction my friend. You are very intelligent and knowledgeable about the game. And it was nice to see how you rewound it to make sure you were getting the right information. I'm from Boston, and saw just about every game Larry Legendf played. He was just amazing to watch. Magic to this day says Larry is the best player ever, and Larry says Magic is the best (along with Jordan). You'd have to mix Luka, Harden, Curry, and KD in equal parts to get another Larry. Oh, Luka is 6'7"...Larry is quoted as 6'9"..but other players state he was closer to 6'10" ...and when you see him and Magic together, he looks taller. And EVERYONE comments how BIG Larry is when they play him. I can't imagine many non centers out play Olajuwan on a JUMP BALL. Larry was just too smart. 😄 Larry crushed his knuckle on his shooting have BEFORE PLAYING ANY GAME IN THE NBA...and made him a worse shooter (yeah...imagine Larry being BETTER) but he was still a killer shot.. and was virtually ambidextrous as shooter. Which means the LEFT HAND GAME was just a fun way to mess with Portland who beat the Celtics earlier in the season ..and he promised to do that for 3 quarters (other than jump shots). Jerome Kersey was D'ing Bird up...and Bill Walton (or McHale..i forget which) tells Jerome..."Wait till he starts using his right hand!" after Jerome was being abused. 😁😄

Not when it came to 3’s. Jordan was clutch but he wasn’t Burd. Bird was a better 3 pt shooter than Michael period. That said…in Jordan’s prime years….and relative to the rest of his Game….3 pt shots was the weakest part of his game. Even if we’re generous and said they are closer 3 pt shooters than people think….to say they were equals at the 3 pt line is ridiculous. It’s like saying Mike can pass as good as Larry, or saying Larry can dunk (cuz he could)as good as Jordan….both of these statements would and are ridiculously false. Check out the Lebron vs Jordan video…the one where the video talks about the 3 pt stats for both players. No disrespect to Jordan as he (along with Wilt) is probably the most physically gifted NBA player of all time….but the 3 pt part of his game (although great at times) is what it is.

What James Worthey meant about preferring to guard Jordan over Larry is better articulated by his teammate, Michael Cooper: "You knew if Jordan had the ball, once he gave it up, you were okay with that. Larry could go get offensive rebounds. He could make a great pass. He was the ultimate offensive threat. Anytime he was on the offensive side of the floor you had to defend him. To me, that makes him the best I've ever played against." When guarding Larry, you had to maintain 100% focus and intensity, Larry never took a break and neither could you. As to the "clutch factor," Pat Riley, Coach of the LA Lakers said “If I had to choose a player to take a final shot to win a game I’d choose (Michael) Jordan, but if I could pick one to shoot to save my life I would pick Bird.”

It wasn't just the cheek fracture he also had a toe infection for 3 weeks that he played on before seeing a doctor the doctor had to cut two inches between his toes for the infection to drain. The man told the doctor to wrap it and proceeded to play on it that night. By the end of the game his sock was even soaked in blood. He also had back issues, surgeries on both Achilles tendons and he fractured a knuckle in college that he admitted left him without the same feel for the ball. If he was this good with all of that imagine what he would have been like at peak condition. And remember Bird was the only player Jordan never got one over on.

I watched this just now. I feel like the Legends that played in the Bird, Magie Era just played with so much heart. They truly had love for the game. I also feel like the toughness was much different then. I watched them all play. I do not think there will be a better Era in Basketball. Those guys were all great.

I loved the Larry Bird Trash talking video because in it you realize that even though Bird was a trash talker, it really never bothered Magic at all. He seemed to just revel in the the engagement as if it gave them both that push to do better in the game. The Larry Bird’s 50 greatest assists isn’t a bad video to watch as well. And the 4 Crazy Stories That Prove Larry Bird Was the Toughest NBA Player of all Time (in case you didn’t watch that one and just read the comments) is also squeamish to hear/watch.

You would think 3 MVP awards in a ROW would be amazing enough. Only Bird, Russel, and Wilt did that. But Bird did something even MORE amazing: He was either #1 or #2 in the league MVP vote for EIGHT straight years. WOW! College player of the year, Rookie of the year, and an All-Star his rookie year. Three time 3 point shootout champ... never beaten once. 6-0 against MJ in the finals... sweep, sweep.

The left handed game against Portland, was meant to be disrespectful. That game was during the 85-86 season. Portland was the only team that’s beat the Celtics at their home in the Boston Garden that whole season (Bird’s Celtics went 50 wins to 1 loss at home throughout the regular season and the playoffs). Larry took his revenge on them at their home, by telling the players and the media he would go left handed. He scored 47 points total, 27 points left handed, 14 rebounds and scored the buzzer beating, game winning shot in overtime. James Worthy wasn’t the only player to say they’d rather guard Jordan than Bird. The reason why his because whether or not Bird had the ball he was always doing something to set up something else…meaning a pick on someone, cutting into the paint to grab a board, or trying to get open and be ready to drain a dagger. He never stopped playing or let up from start to finish while he was on the court. I think someone else mentioned this already….but yes Bird is the most clutch player of all time…better than Jordan. In head to head match ups Bird had 17 wins against Jordan and 11 losses. In the playoffs…where clutch is king….Bird had 6 wins and 0 losses against Jordan.

I'm a Boston guy, old guy, but I'm not bias with sports because I appreciate talent whoever it is, Birds ability to hit clutch buckets at the most crucial moments was amazing, he was a special player, Jordan was also amazing , with Jordans 6 world champs is hard to argue, his longevity along with consistency makes him second only to Tom Brady, but Larry was maybe the most clutch and never give up attitude, some of the comebacks were mind blowing. And check out his all-star 3 competitions.

There ain't nobody you can compare to bird. Luka and kd are great but they can't win 3 straight mvps in this soft league today. Back then when you could play hard, like a man, without fouls every 10 seconds and people flopping, they'd be slightly above average. Three straight mvps in an Era with more hall of famers than any Era ever in a tougher league than ever. There's no discussion. Larry and mj are always top three. More like 1a and 1b honestly. Great react. Check out his trash talking vids. He taught mj how to trash talk. Literally. One love from stl.

MJ, the man they call the greatest player in history, said that “He wasn’t as athletic or fast as many of us, but when you take into account his basketball IQ, he has no weaknesses. In other words, he’s saying that LB is probably as good if not better than he is. He probably would have much rather played with him, than against him. That’s why MJ was so glad to see LarryBird retire. I love that Magic was so sorry to see him go, because he wanted the competition and motivation that having LarryBird in the league provided. Entire franchises were built with one person in mind, we all know who.

Love your reaction videos. I think you would love to hear about how tough he was it’s unreal. He had a toe infection and he never told anyone when he was hurt he just played. He never took anything for pain he would just say give me a couple of beers and I ok. Well the toe had gotten infected and had spread to the second toe so most of the infection was in the tender part between the two toes. The doctor saw him limping and took a look at his foot he had already played a few games without saying anything. The doctor told him he would have to cut a 2 and a half cut between his toes. The doctor told him that he needed to go to the hospital and get this taken care of meaning he would have to miss the game that night. That’s when he said he’s not missing the game so the doctor told him he would numb his foot up and would have to make that cut. Larry told him he didn’t need that just to give him a couple of beers and that would be ok. He didn’t yell he just sat there and when the doctor had drained the infection out wrapped his foot up and he went out and played the game as always. After the game when he showed the bandages were soaked with blood showered and kept going. That to me was the most unbelievable story I have heard. You can see that clip also with all the others. Lol.

When James Worthy said that he would rather guard Michael Jordan (his college teammate from North Carolina, by the way) than Larry Bird, I think he was saying that if Jordan beat him for a score, it was because of some crazy athletic move that no one could stop (not even Jordan if he had an identical twin brother). But when guarding Larry, you had to think your way around the court, because you could stop Bird physically, but he knew that, and had all these mental traps planned for you and when Bird sprang his traps and scored on you, it would look to everyone else like Worthy could have stopped it, but didn't. Worthy's point is valid however: "You try playing this guy and outsmarting him."

I LOVE your analysis as you go. You are a true student of the game! 25:34 - Regarding your comment about poor defense: with the game on the line I'm certain coaches reminded players to not foul Larry with no real time on the clock. It's a matter of weighing the risks between a tough shot from the corner against 2 or 3 free throw shots.
