Two things are obvious. Larry Byrd had a ton of street in his game and you could tell people we’re in it for the love of the game back in the day. It’s all about those fancy cars and fancy clothes now with your $2000 haircut and your $2000 pair of sunglasses sitting on the sideline out for a month with a sprained pinky. This is when it was real.

Larry is one of the toughest, most competitive players the league has ever seen. He didn't believe in load management during the season. He believed he was payed to do a job and he did it, even if it meant playing through injuries. Which he did the last 5 years of his career. And his competitiveness was off the charts. He didn't just want to beat his opponents, he took their hearts and instilled fear in them through his ability to talk trash and his tremendous IQ. And not just talk, but back it up. He would tell his opponents what he was going to do and then do it. You never hear stories about any other player other than Jordan now or before then that does that.

The GOAT. There was a game where Bird was one steal away from a quadruple double in just 3 quarters. They were so far ahead he wouldn't go back in the game. He said he'd done enough damage. Bird made sure everyone scored. He didn't care about stats, he cared about the scoreboard.

The 3 point shoot was established like just when Larry got to the league... so he wasn't practicing that shoot before... you see he got better every year after then. And I think he won the first 3 3p shot contest, and couldnt be there for the fourth one... Hodges won, and they asked him if he won because Larry was injuried, and Hodges said "he knows where he can find me", to what Larry replied "I know, at the end of the Bulls bench". The significance of this, is that kids today get into the league knowing there is a 3p shoot line.. but he came to the league unaware of this, so he developed his dagger 3p shoot on the go.

As another Cleveland fan I'm loving the representation. Larry Bird was one of the progenitors of basketball. He set the standard for Trash Talk, Shooting and Passing. Mark Price was one of the first to really study Bird. Nash, Dirk, Jokic, Doncic are all great due to studying him. They're a lot of white guys. I'm a white guy too. I might be projecting... Basketball is one of these wonderful things that everybody can identify with , and that's one thing I love about the direction the NBA has right now. Something about "but more important, a friend."
