His greatest strength, his jab, was probably a factor out of many in his lack of popularity as a champion at the time. He's not an exciting power puncher or one for ring theatrics, he just cooly lands that stinging, stiff jab with pinpoint accuracy again and again and again, eventually outpoints or knocks you out late in the fight. Great that now people appreciate his skills.

@@G-gl1hb For starters, if you call that ducking and weaving (compared to Tyson), then there's no comparison. Secondly, Frazier already tired himself out doing it within half a round. Third, Holmes just waited for him to drop his guard while he stood there flush in front of Holmes and then put up the sign on his head "punch here".

Larry had the all around most complete jab because he had so many different variations of it, could dance with it, could go flat footed and beat you up with it, could throw it from the waist etc. liston had most powerful jab of all time he used his jab very differently too. Predominantly using it coming forwards and using it to set up his own offence in stead of the typical jab used to keep distance, the prime Cassius Clay had the fastest, snappiest jab ever seen that 1964 clay nobody in history beats him to the punch, way too quick with the trigger for anyone in history

Both are retired now so I'll go ahead and say Floyd and Andre Ward could both be on that list aswell tbh. Floyd for his creative use of the body jab and one-two, and Andre Ward fought some fights pretty much with one hand lol Larry Holmes was a big influence on him and it showed at times.

It’s the footwoork that really makes a good jab into a great jab. You have to move around to be able to stick jabs repeatedly without getting hit back. Once the jab lands, the combo is right behind it. Great style of fighting. Works well if you are tall/have long limbs.

Yeah the way he kinda circles to the left from the outside with floaty footwork and throws the jab out there with unpredictable timings at any point throughout his feet movement cycle. One of my favorite things to watch in boxing, it's just so fun to do, I always try to replicate it when I practice/spar. If you're tall and have a good reach its extremely oppressive, they just feel stuck like a heavybag, not able to make any forward progress on getting you towards the ropes since youre circling them, theyre constantly having to adjust to you, and they don't know when to advance since theyll probably eat a stiff jab if they do. Feels like you're a mongolian horse archer against a hapless foot soldier

Larry Holmes was the greatest heavyweight of his era. I know he may consider that a slight because he has never wavered in his belief that he was the greatest heavyweight of all time. He had the competitiveness of a true champion. In the end, Larry is universally recognized as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers in history. I hope he has found peace in that recognition. In life, what more can one ask for? Sleep easy Larry: nobody denies the mark you made, NOBODY.

@Christian Warren I have to find this damn interview so people don't think I'm off my rocker lol.. My fav of all time is RJJ, right... He was more athlete than boxer though, far more skills (bare with me) to pair with his athleticism than Wilder. Wilder is far more athletic than boxer. This bounce Jab is a very athletic move. In & out but sting Like RJJ, Wilder could simply use his athleticism as his gift.. definitely way better than he is now by adapting this style, of which Larry Holmes himself says he can and would teach Wilder. I'm a fan of BOXING. As a boxing fan we need this story to continue to prolong this momentum we haven't seen in a while.

@@henryposadas3309 Spot on, too late to master it in the Holmes manner. as far as not being able to beat Fury with it, I'm not necessarily ruling that out. It's only so many times a man can take being peppered for coming in before he makes a mistake. But like you said, if Wilder is willing to learn. I do want to see fury Joshua before Wilder Fury 3. There will be a story to tell for certain from that route.

Use the jab to control the distance, the pace and tempo of the entire bout, by landing at different angles, different speed, different intensity and different power. Then, you can stay feinting it and throwing it in multiples and combinations. You can even begin to disguise it! It's absolutely the Premiere Weapon of the entire game.

Makes you feel that the jab is your best friend in a fight. If you can establish distance with your jab, you are mostly safe. Awesome video.

There is no fighter in boxing history with a better left jab than the Easton Assassin. Some boxers had quicker jabs, some had heavier jabs, but Holmes delivered the jab with a frightening mix of speed and power. Larry also used the jab more than any boxer in history as evidenced by his penchant for dominating rounds without throwing a high number of hooks, crosses, or uppercuts. The effectiveness of his jab allowed his skill set (e.g., quick hands, good foot speed, varied punching arsenal) to flourish and if you add Holmes' top flight intangibles (e.g., excellent chin, huge heart, high boxing IQ), you have a boxer who dominated his division for 7 1/2 years and was never beaten in his prime.

It truly was an honor watching him in the 1980's. That jab is brutal. (Is it just me, or do some of the fighters in this video like like they're from the original Punch Out arcade game? Kid Quick, Pizza Pasta, Piston Hurricane.....)

It was beautiful how he made sure his stiff jab and his light jab looked identical from the waste up. The only difference was what he did with his legs. His light jab was a basic fast jab, but when he threw stiff jabs he pushed off with his rear leg and used his front leg to keep from going too deep. That kind of jab can have enough force to knock someone out or at very least feel like a chopping straight cross. So Holmes would mix up his light and stiff jabs, start out throwing a few light ones so that the other fighter thinks he can just eat them with little damage, then throw a hard rear leg push jab that hits like a right cross. Alternatively Holmes could throw a few hard jabs so the other guy thinks all of the jabs will be strong and starts blocking and tensing up whenever he sees a jab. Then Holmes can throw a light jab, watch the guy block/tense up and then go for a curving right cross to the side of the face.

Mr. Holmes, to me, had this tremendous fighting heart like Carmen Basilio. He might get wobbled, he might get hurt or knocked down, but that's when he came on even harder. It was a privilege to grow up when Larry Holmes was champ.

More than just the jab. It's the footwork that puts him in the positions to use that ram rod left jab. AJ simply doesn't have the footwork in his arsenal and its probably too late for him to learn it now.
