He was one of the most recognizable and popular players in the NBA before even stepping on the court. He had dominated in the NCAA with the UNLV Runnin Rebels of the early 90s which included him, Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony and Anderson Hunt; coached by the legendary Jerry Tarkanian. They embarrassed Christian Laettner and Duke to win the National Championship in 1990 then went undefeated and seemed like a lock to repeat in 1991, but Laettner and Duke would get their revenge in the Final Four. Johnson would then be the first overall pick of the 1991 NBA draft and instantly become the Hornets franchise player, winning rookie of the year. He form a short lived partnership with fellow young star Alonzo Mourning, but they couldn’t seem to get along and would both be traded away in consecutive years, Johnson would be traded the year after Mourning and get to spend one year in Charlotte with another Hornets legend in Glen Rice, but they did not have great team success. Johnson would be traded to the New York Knicks prior to the 1997 season where he would team with guys like Patrick Ewing, Allan Houston and John Starks and later Latrell Sprewell and Marcus Camby, as he was a crucial piece to the success of the late 90s Knicks. He was one of the key players of the Knicks and Heat rivalry of that era as he would constantly feud with his former teammate, Mourning. He would have some memorable performance in New York with unforgettable moments like his 4 point play vs. the Indiana Pacers in game 3 of the eastern conference finals which helped New York continue their Cinderella season and be the first 8 seed to make the NBA finals, where they would sadly lose to Tim Duncan, David Robinson and the Spurs. Johnson would play just two more seasons after this before chronic back pain forced him into retirement at just 31 years old.
But even though, his career had the potential to be so much better, he was a great starter from the beginning to the end and on top of that was one of the NBA’s first cultural icons with his famous character “Grandmama” and the prestigious distinction of being the first ever SLAM magazine Cover athlete. But, he doesn’t get talked about as much as he should so we’re going to flip that around and talk about him today, let’s jog your memory.

Massive Larry Johnson fan... I had so much Hornets starter gear in junior high. Hahahaha. Even tho he had a relatively long and successful career... he's still one of the biggest "what ifs" in NBA history. With a busted back and his explosive superpowers taken away he still averaged 16/ 7.5 / 3 for his career. Insane. Before his injury those 2 seasons he averaged 21/11/4 and averaged 80 games a season and 39 minutes a game. Plus his team was getting better. The first 5 seasons of his career he averaged 19/9/4 and 3 of those seasons were after hurting his back. LJ would've been a 22/10/4 guy most his career I would imagine. He was so fun to watch. NBA Jam Hornets was the ish... hahaha

*FUN FACTS* • To date, Johnson is the only male player to win a version of a national player of the year title in high school, JUCO, and NCAA division 1. •According to one publication, there were some scouts who believed Johnson could’ve been a lottery pick if he came out of Odessa into the 1989 NBA draft.

Johnson was a big deal when he came in to the league and rightfully so. Had he been injury free or less injured, his career would look A LOT different. Healthy, he's a sure fire hall of famer and could have done some real damage in the league. He was an athletic beast, with skill, great spin moves in the post and an ability to get to the basket through defenders.

What an amazing video centering around Larry Johnson. I have newfound admiration and respect for LJ. I wasn’t born yet to watch either Johnson or Mourning in their Hornets’ days, so I’m glad that this video exists. Very informative. It’s unfortunate that Alonzo Mourning couldn’t get the contract he wanted from the Hornets, and Larry succumbing to injuries so early in his career. Despite their bickering, Johnson and Mourning seemingly played very well together, and the Hornets had a good core around them. The Charlotte Hornets still have not reached nearly the success and popularity that these two brought to the franchise, even after 30 years later.

@@gordonrichardson39Barkley was faster and more explosive in Philly. But it’s wasn’t a huge difference, except speed. Chuck and Karl were freight trains getting up the court. I think without injury, the only PFs who would have eclipsed LJ in the 90s was Karl, Chuck and maybe Shawn Kemp.

i'm hooked on your videos because these were some of the players i had watched in the 90's. and that's when i was collecting cards. you should do a video on drew bledsoe! may people think he was the guy who tom brady replaced, but he was the reason the patriots become good and if he never got hurt who knows? the year they traded him he made the pro bowl so he didn't suck like many fans believe. also nomar garciaparra would be a good one too. keep up the good work hope to see more videos from you

I’m not even 3 minutes into this and you’re already killing it with the info!! Outstanding!!! Absolutely outstanding work!!! (How did you know about that Southern Methodist S.A.T score???) That Ball State game in the ‘90 tournament when Paris McCurdy slipped at the end was such a nail biter!!! Off topic: I love the sleigh bells in the background (pretty sweet trademark, and so much more effective than straight voice) well played... @3:33 was that David Butler that threw that no look pass from the three point line to Larry in the low post?? Wow!!!

@@IONTENNISTHAT I'll take Larry's 22/10 for 82 games over Zions 27/7 for 30 games any day. Not to mention Larry's intangibles And leadership skills. Larry's marketability far outweighs Zions. Zion is pretty much a joke at this point and his career is all but over

@@stephenwilliams9628 zion is on jordan brand is under 25 and has been an all star he is marketable AF and is more of a problem than larry ever was he is the difference between the play in and the WCF he is a top 3 mvp level player larry is not lmao nobody takes larry over zion would you take Barkley or larry im sure it's barkley zion maybe a joke but I bet every team in the league would trade for him on a second lmao nobody wants larry that bad
