She was RAW talent, down to the bone. That's why I respect her so much. Aretha definitely was shady, and could be a mean woman at times. But overall, she was the real deal. I used to wonder why she got her ass kissed so much by the industry. One day, I sat down, put some good head phones on and listened to her 1972 *Gospel live album,* in full (the unedited version). Baaayybeee, it was like a spiritual roller-coaster. She had me shouting, screaming, crying and really thinking about my life in general. The way she would sang each syllable, stretched out every single word, and held on to those notes were incredible. That range, that power, that soul. Simply put, she was a musical genius. Aretha was more than just superficial high notes and technical BS. That lady sang from her soul, she knew how to tell the story and never sang a song the same way twice. You will definitely be missed, Aretha. And deserved every award, honor, tribute & ass-kissing the industry ever gave you. YOU were THAT talented... wait scratch that, you were *GIFTED,* period. RIP, you earned it.

She made a great contribution to the backbone of this generation of overall entertainment. Her way of connecting with the audience was unparalleled. The ability of giving the audience what it needed came like second nature to her. To say she made the world her stage is an understatement. She bridged the gap between spirit and emotion. She walked upright and stood in many different buildings and withstood the test of time in comparison to other performers. There is no comparison.

Our Dear Lord gave Aretha Franklin the gift of the angels voices that she so honestly used to create such wonderful songs as she did so many times, her voice touched the hearts and souls of all colors creeds and races, her selfless approach to letting her emotional voice carry us all to heights only she could attain, her civil rights approach was no different Aretha again touched so so many many lives including mine, if you can hear her sing without crying like so many have over the years then you are not listening. she is a treasure for history and time.

william carter I saw a tribute to Andy Griffith a few months back. A wonderful TV show and lots of good memories. Then some hate filled asshole starts in on the Obamacare spot he made in 2007 with Ronnie Howard. The idiot called Griffith disgusting names & a communist. They have no respect for ANYTHING! Andy pretty much kept polical talk to himself. That's the rare occasion he spoke out. And in a very innocuous manner as I recall.

Hey Im trying to figure out, who the 48 idiots that Thumbs Down this? I mean wow, give this women and her family some respect, she DESERVE MUCH RESPECT. The world is that damn evil?!! She accomplished and did a lot. If it wasnt for her voice and ALL that was involved for the civil rights movement, none of the things that happens today would exist. RIP Aretha, One Love, One of a kind. The knuckle heads are going to hate but your voice will overpower all of that, FR.

as we live and breathe, right now....there are singers all over this country that can sing as well as her. Especially in your black churches, where so many singers, male and female, were groomed on her gospel material. Her "Amazing Grace" album, is like basic training for a lot of singers who go to church a lot..they study that album like its a master class of singing. But what made her stand out from someone you might snatch off the street who sings gospel, is how versatile she was. I can name a number of female singers who, in my opinion, sing as well or even better than Aretha...but they cant go from one genre of music to the next, as seamlessly as she did. Her transition from all the Broadway, pop and jazz standards that she sang for Columbia Records, are almost night and day, compared to her material from Atlantic Records and Arista. ..its almost like you're listening to two different singers. So, as Gladys Knight put it so appropriately "Aretha, was the one who broke thru all the barriers, for us"..and she was talking about all the things that were laid at the feet of black, female vocalists in the 60s and 70s...when it was assumed that they had to stay in their lanes and sing one type of music. You would see Aretha singing in the Caribbean (before she stopped flying, altogether) and then you saw her singing at Jimmy Carter's inaugural ball celebration...you would see her sitting down at the piano, singing 'Jumping Jack Flash"...and then you saw her filling in at the Grammys for Luciano Pavarotti, singing opera.
