Darrell Waltrip once made Mike Helton really angry because of his comments on the COT. Larry McReynolds remembers it well.

As goofy as Darrell Waltrip could be at times, he did do a great job of commentating when he was serious, and he often tackled subjects that some were afraid to discuss, like the car of tomorrow's state of racing as he did here.

sigh. i don’t like the whole “shutting down criticism” problem we’ve always had in this sport. god forbid anybody say anything about what’s wrong with the sport, even if it’s constructive. i love this sport but this is something that has been a problem for years and needs to change.

Ikr. NASCAR is just so sensitive to criticism it also counts as feedback too. Even if it's not true it should be put in consideration because half the time it most likely true. Clearly these commentators know what they're talking about but if they're not able to express what they truly feel it just moves us away from reility and truth. It's sad that media has to resort to overreacting to everything negative and just being positive.

Mike Helton and Brian France have mega egos, and they consider acknowledging criticism as an admission that they made mistakes. To them that's a sign of weakness. They'd rather ruin the sport than look weak.

I think that problem is much smaller note that Brian France (and Mike Helton), is out of the picture. With Jim and Steve Phelps rubbing the show now, they actually bother interacting with fans and answering questions and taking criticism and suggestions seriously

Hidden Secrets here’s the issue. You can’t go back to the old points. That was boring. I personally don’t like the elimination rounds or calling it “The Playoffs.” I did like the chase format and title. The driver’s pushed for stage racing, so I can’t argue that one. They are the ones who make the sport work. Pretty sure multi car qualifying is out. I wouldn’t even bother televising it. It’s just qualifying. Not everything can be an event. The race should be the event. I would like to see the horsepower back and actual stock cars again. I think those two things and go back to the chase format would fix a lot of the issues.

Blah blah blah to your statements. I would though like consistency to come back and the last race keep the Championship 4 so they can have close championship battles and cheat very large points margins.

This is the attitude that ran so many committed fans away from the sport. Oddly enough, the media had a lot to do with me leaving. I listened to every show every day on Sirius NASCAR for probably a decade. Evidently Mike Helton must’ve told them to ridicule anyone with something negative to say about the COT, the TV networks, or the racing in general. Pete Pistone actually convinced me to put up or shut up. Haven’t watched a race in years. Missed it for a minute, but now I’d rather sit with the TV off than watch a race or a show dedicated to NASCAR. I assume they still have those shows.

Darrell was totally right about the COT, and NASCAR didn't want to hear the truth. In my opinion, NASCAR overreacted when Dale Sr. died and they implemented a bunch of safety measures that probably didn't need to happen. Other than the softer walls and the HANS devices for the drivers, that's all they needed to do, there was nothing wrong with those cars. Being a Dale Sr. fan, I've heard from more than a few people that he always messed with his belts and harnesses and made them loose because he didn't like them tight around him. So unfortunately, Dale Sr. probably contributed more to his death than anything or anybody, and the COT didn't need to happen. And it's probably why we have some of the boring racing we have today.

Don't say anything to hurt the sport. Let's completely ignore the fact that DW was 100% right. Let's ignore the fact the viewership was down from 10 years previous. Let's ignore the fact that NASCAR was making boneheaded decisions that was driving fans away. I went from a rabid fan who couldn't get enough from the mid 90's through early 2000's. To now i don't think I've watched a full race in about 4 years. NASCAR is a joke of a sport that barely qualifies to be called racing. 2021 we'll see they're trying a TON of new things.
