What can I say about what I just witnessed... Pure vocal perfection. This was an incredible tribute to Simon and Garfunkel's version of this song. I must admit that this is now my favorite version of this song!

Welcome to Pentaholics Anonymous. We meet nightly wherever someone is watching a Pentatonix video for the first time. We aren't looking for a cure, quite the opposite. We enjoy our addiction and try to drag others into it using five part harmony. Have you heard them do "Hallelujah" yet? I think it's the best thing, even after ten years of perfecton, to come out of their mouths. There's been only one change of personnel. They traded one bass singer for another. Everyone else is the same. Kirstie and Mitch are Chameleons and look different every time you see them.

You've just experienced what Pentaholics call the "Wall Of Sound". Pentatonix has won 3 Grammy Awards 1st was for "Daft Punk", 2nd was "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy", 3rd was for a collaboration they did with Dolly Parton and her song "Jolene". I also usually recommend Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine (be prepared to shed a tear) and any of their Christmas music. But really anything you choose will be great. Also they have had only one member change and that was with the Bass singer the original Bass was Avi, he left on good terms and helped them find his replacement whose name is Matt. The other members are the same but 2 of them change their look often (Mitch and Kirsten). Have fun going down the Pentatonix rabbit hole and you'll have a lot of company down in the hole with you.

“Sorry, Simon & Garfunkel”. I. Am. Screaming. 😂 I think you’ll find yourself saying that quite frequently if you continue your PTX journey. I’ve been listening to them since they debuted on the TV series The Sing Off 10+ years ago and they never cease to amaze and surprise. Hallelujah is indeed insane and Bohemian Rhapsody is completely bonkers. Reactors have gotten around the copyright issue with a filter over the video and pausing during the song. Enjoyed your reaction. Hope you’re able to react to more. Their Christmas music also slays with some really ingenious arrangements. Enjoy! eta: one year later, still my favorite reaction to this song. 😘

A couple of things: they've made a promise that they'll never record anything they can't perform live. Also, this song is straight up simple compared to some of the other crazy stuff they've done. Still amazing, and I'm convinced the 4 main singers and the one guy that left in the past would be ranked among the top 100 singers in the world. The beatboxer is definitely top 10 in the world.

So, Pentatonix: formed in 2011 for the purpose of competing on the television a capella contest show The Sing-Off. The nucleus of the group was three friends who had known each other from early adolescence as they participated in various youth choir and musical theater programs in the suburbs of Dallas, TX: Scott Hoying (tall blond baritone), Kirstin Maldonado (originally mezzo-soprano, now considers herself an alto), and Mitch Grassi (tenor/countertenor), known as The Trio from the group they formed in high school. It was suggested (by the man who would become their arranger, Ben Bram) that they add a vocal bass (that is, a bass singer who could imitate a string bass or bass guitar) and a beatboxer to make up the five members required by the show. The original bass, whom you saw in Mary Did You Know, was Avi Kaplan, who departed in 2017 and was replaced by the man you see here, Matt Sallee. Beatboxer Kevin Olusola is the group's Renaissance Man - discovered by his future group members in a viral video where he played cello while he beatboxed, he was finishing the pre-med program at Yale, after having completed a year abroad in China, where he gained fluency in Chinese. You can find all the Sing-Off episodes online, plus more than 200 other songs by Pentatonix, here on KZfaq. Note that Mitch and Kirstin change their looks frequently. Some of it is just natural - they were just 19 at the time of the Sing-Off and are now approaching 30 - and some is fashion choices. Sngs - some of my favorites in various categories: *Covers* Daft Punk medley, Imagine, Attention, Blinding Lights, Butter x Dynamite (mash-up of two songs from Kpop group BTS); *Christmas* Little Drummer Boy, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, What Christmas Means to Me; *Originals* Love Again, Can't Sleep Love, Coffee in Bed, Happy Now, Petals.
@df51992 жыл бұрын
The girl, Kirstin, is the same. She and Mitch change their looks constantly so that confuses people. The only change is their newer bass since 2017 , Matt. He replaced the original bass, Avi. Scott is the same too. So just one member change in their 10 year career. Recommend their Amazing Grace, Come Along, and I Just Called Say I Love You. Use the live performance of Hallelujah from their Christmas Special. It’s has good as the official video. Also, Bohemian Rhapsody is jaw dropping. You may need to use video filters along with the pauses to help get past the copyrighting. It’s their record label that causes the problems.
@halcyoncmdr43242 жыл бұрын
Since you mentioned the live performance of Hallelujah being the same as the official video, Pentatonix doesn't release an official video for a new song until they feel they can reach that same level in live performances.

A lot of the Pentaholics say that Pentatonix does not make a cover of a song but remakes/improves on the song as they cover it. Often having five people is an advantage. Being acapella might be expected to take away from a song but, due to their various talents, it does not do that. They don't have to share the limelight. Each of them IS a light. They have so many songs that show their talents in such unexpected ways. They have written original songs, added a bit of a musical instrument here and there, collaborated a few times, and generally will not disappoint. Please keep going.

Love seeing someone discover Pentatonix for the first time. You've entered a very deep rabbit hole with hundreds of wonderful songs. May I suggest that you do a few of their most well known songs first such as.... Hallelujah (639 million views), Bohemian Rhapsody, Amazing Grace and their just released amazing rendition of The Prayer. Their journey started in 2011 when, as schoolkids, they entered The Sing Off and won it. There were some fantastic performances - my favourite is the 12th Dog Days are Over. They have only had one change when Avi (the bearded Bass in the earlier recordings) left in 2017 to be replaced by Matt, wearing the white jacket in this one. I know you are going to enjoy your journey and all we Pentaholics will be following and waiting for your first "Mitch slap". (You'll know when it happens).

Welcome aboard! Pentatonix covers are often referred to as "upgrades" and will frequently blow you away. You may want to check out their covers of "Imagine" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" next as they are amazing. First time I heard their cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody" was when it first came out and Brian May was so impressed he posted it on several of his social media sites stating "enjoy!" It is a tribute to Queen so well done but I would probably not have listened to it right away without the encouragement of Brian May himself.

It's interesting that Simon and Garfunkel did Sound of Silence three different ways. They did a folk version, a soft rock version, and a full rock version. Same gal, Kirstie, she just had different color hair. There was a different bass guy, Avi, he left the group in 2017 and now Matt is the bass guy, he's on the end with the white jacket. That would be Mitch, all in black, next to Kevin, and he is incredible, he's a Counter Tenor and can hit notes that soar into the clouds. Oh yeah and when Matt is singing, Scott (guy in the middle) takes over the Bass. You'll find that they all have incredible ranges. The beatboxer/singer/Cello player is Kevin. Everything, every single song they write, or do a cover on is different, and done with such skill, and excellence from all the singers, to the music made with their voices, hands, and feet, with the exception of Kevin's cello playing, and their background chorus, and sounds are excellent. Their video scenes are well thought out from the backgrounds, to their mostly clothes matching. Theirs close to 200 songs, every one of them good to great, some made and done better than the originals. Kirstie, Scot, and Mich grew up together, Kevin is the cello player, and fantastic beatboxer. And in the beginning their was Avi, with the beard, after he left amicably, Matt came in as the new bass, and has got in very well. Enjoy your journey. One of my most favorite things (with this song in particular) is watching people trying to comprehend what they're hearing and then just be at an absolute loss for words. It speaks to the incredible talent that Pentatonix possesses and how they can take a classic song like this, treat it with such respect but also make it truly unique. Whenever I introduce people to Pentatonix I use this song and it's really not that hard to see why.

Same girl. Avi the bass singer left the group and the guy in the white jacket is now their bass singer. Reactors always make comments when it's Mitch's time to sing solo.

Being a New Yorker, Simon and Garfunkel are synonymous with this Song. I'll get them "Your Memo" I think that they will understand!!

I too like the Simon & Garfunkel version, however this is a spectacular cover!❤

Thank you for a great reaction. As a Pentaholic, it’s always fun to see a first reaction and you didn’t disappoint. In order to get your reactions past the copyright police, continue to pause as many times as you want because we Pentaholics don’t mind. A lot of reactors use a filter and we don’t mind that either. If you want to know more about PTX, try THE BEGINNERS GUIDE TO PENTATONIX.

Many people have said this and I agree .. S&G was a warning. Disturbed is anger because people didn't listen. Pentatonix is hope that we can still learn.

You have to check out their original, "Run To You." Given your knowledge of composition, you'll be blown away. Other amazing ones: "Say Something," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentelmen," "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," Evolution of Michael Jackson, "Amazing Grace," Daft Punk Medley, "Gold" (one of all time FAVES), and so many more. Also, some amazing performances from their debut in the Sing-Off TV show.

I was actively sad to see that this was posted today because I was hoping to see more of your reactions to them ASAP! Glad to see this, very touched to see how shaken you were (SAME, TBH), and I suggest listening to Kiiara's song 'Gold' and then watching PTX's video of it. It's a master-class in dynamic range and quality of recording, so much so that it's easy to forget that Mitch is a freaking vocal BEAST.

I’m such a fan of this idea. First I love Gold. But watching the original and then PTX really helps people understand so much about their brilliance

Yeah, def listen to Gold, done live shows how insane their arrangements are and how supremely talented they all are, x

Welcome to the land of the Pentaholics! Your reaction was spectacular. Every time you shook your head, or stared at the camera, or stopped the track, I thought, oh boy and he hasn't heard Scott finish, and he hasn't heard how smooth Mitch is, and he hasn't heard robust Matt drop the deep note, and he hasn't heard Kirstie belting, and has he seen Kevin stomping and clapping and whoosshing? This is one of Pentatonix's best arrangements with some of their classic elements of solos supported by the backing harmonies, each member getting to shine with their unique voice, the layering, the call and response, the harmonies, the crescendo and the PTX signature Wall of Sound. Happy to join your PTX journey.

I don’t think Simon and Garfunkel would mind do you? The magic of it though is that it never loses its original root . Genius x

Of course Scott always handles the bass line when Avi or Matt is singing lead. You will see this trend if you watch them enough! Thanks for your wonderful reaction! You may want to think about getting a filter to put over the video, we would understand as PTX gets copyright claimed quite a bit! Take your pick of any PTX song or solo work and I will be happy!

Of course they put their own spin on everything…Hallelujah is also phenomenal ..actually everything they do is phenomenal…I knew from the first line on The Sing-off that they would win and go nuts… 3 grammy’s so far I think…maybe more.. welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole..

I love how you still gave Simon and Garfunkel props and said it’s a totally different sound. Pentatonix that’s not comparing apples to oranges, that’s comparing apples to automobiles! :-) Lol sending love to you and yours from Orlando Florida

perfect definition of "Out of Many; One". They are simply exquisite.

Do watch them do “Havana”. Kevin O the beatboxer gets a solo near the end that is awesome. Then go to his own channel and watch him do “Down”. Incredible stuff.

The tall blond guy is Scott Hoying - Baritone; the girl is Kirsten Maldonado, Mezzo-Soprano; the guy with the hat is Mitch Grassi, Counter-Tenor; the guy with the white jacket is Matt Sallee, Basso-Profundo; the beatboxer is Kevin Olusola-Tenor/Beatboxer/Cellist/Cellist beatboxer. Scott, Kirsten, and Mitch met in a high school in Arlington, TX (between Dallas and Ft. Worth, TX). After graduation went to different colleges and majored in music. They got back together for a tv singing competition called "Sing-Off," but, they required 5 person groups, so Kevin and Matt came on-board through referrals. Listen to "Sound of Silence" with the metal group "Disturbed."

It was not Matt that performed with them in the competition. It was their original bass singer-Avi (who was in earlier videos like Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody and Mary Did you Know). Avi left to spend more time with family and to not hold PTX back from tours as he didn’t want to travel away from family so much. He left on good terms and (I believe) even helped the group find his replacement-Matt.
