Season 1 of the Skirball's music documentary series continues with a dazzling performance by Las Cafeteras, telling modern-day stories of Chicanx life in Southern California. Taking the stage under the stars at the Skirball, the LA favorites deliver their uplifting blend of Afro-Mexican beats, hip-hop, and rancheras. Greeting us from Sao Paulo in a set filmed exclusively for Skirball Stages, Latin Grammy-nominated Xenia França of Brazil invites audiences to soak up the rhythms of Bahia, mixed with a pulsing blend of electronica, jazz, and R&B. Reimagining roots music through the lens of their respective megacities, both musical acts find firm footing in tradition while in constant dialogue with modern-day multiculturalism.
More than a performance, the special takes viewers behind the scenes with the artists for a look at their musical processes, aspirations, and hopes for the future in the midst of a global pandemic.
In 2020, as the global pandemic restricted long-distance travel and large gatherings, the Skirball reimagined its concert format to create the music documentary series Skirball Stages-creating connection near and far through music and storytelling. Season 1 pairs national and international acts originally booked for the Skirball’s Sunset Concerts 2020 season with talents from the local music scene.
