I recently got a Longer Ray 5 20W Laser cutter. It's fantastic, but it needs an enclosure.
Here I use the Ray 5 to cut it's own enclosure out of plywood.
Longer sent me this laser for free, but all opinions expressed are my own.
You can download the CAD for this build at: github.com/roTechnic/Ray5Encl...
If you'd like to buy the 20W Ray 5, it is available here with my discount: s.zbanx.com/r/AAP6iz88n2nA

It's a really nice box and I really like the approach to use the laser itself to create its enclosure. 🙂It's a great video! I too would love to get the parts plans in a more user-friendly format (svg/dxf) since Fusion 360 is difficult to learn for one project only.

I second this comment. I would be building this today if the file was compatible with lightburn. In fact, github cannot show the files. Maybe I am a newbie, but I would really like to build this enclosure. I love how the cutter makes its own enclosure, I have everything else I need. Shame the files are not compatible.

Such an awesome job, nice going... so glad you did the larger item with a smaller laser, people keep saying "oh you can't do that cause the side is too large, and i was completely baffled why you couldn't just do it in two... cheers for the video, bought an enclosure yesterdag, damn😅 but sure i'll want to upgrade at some point cheers for that👊 p.s the teeth stripping wire gave me a good giggle, and reminded me of my dads super safety skills with such things😆

Hello! Glad to say I've started the proccess to build my own enclosure... Thank you so much, your video is so helpfully, and your project using Fusion 360 is the best part of all, because my laser cutter can't cut the same dimensions... Because of that, I've started a learning path of Fusion 360, what amazing tool dude! I've generated all dwf files needed to cut but using 6mm mdf(my laser cut are Two Trees, and the weight is too low. Thanks again, soon the project is finished, I publish a invite to you to know my enclosure in social media.

Thank you for this video. Of all the videos I have watched, yours is the best DIY and the fact that the laser had to cut the material for itself. Please do share an SVG/DXF File for ease of use and manipulation in Lightburn Software

Pretty sweet piece of kit there mate, lol, I'm a yank in disguise. I'm glad I came across this video; just no sense in paying $90/sheet for cabinet grade plywood, or to buy a lesser grade and have to patch all the holes/voids on the edges. Also too heavy if I want to move it. Thanks for sharing!

This is a fine video and a fine project. Well done. Thank you for sharing the f3d files. Unfortunately, many of us do not have Fusion 360 at the ready. Its wonderful, but expensive and complex. I have to assume that someone has produced svg files for this project. Many of the commenter have asked for such. Can you help us get svg files so we can make a bunch of these?

really nice enclosure, well done! its always cool to put a machine to use to better itself. could you maybe do a video detailing some of the projects that you weren't able to do with a 10W laser? i just got a 5.5W one and i'd love to get an idea of how these diode lasers really scale. speed is the obvious compromise and i suppose i may be limited to 6mm ply whereas you're cutting 9mm with ease, but i'd love to hear where you saw the limits of one and entirely new possibilities with the other.

it’s not just about power, but also dot size. in moving from my previous 10w laser to this one, the dot size also reduced, packing more energy into a smaller space which makes it cut even faster! I haven’t used a 5.5w one, only a 10w and 20w, but I found that 6mm hardwood ply was the most I could cut without significant charring in the 10w. the 20w can do 9mm easily, which for me means that I can cut jigs for the workshop (6mm is too floppy!) that’s all with hardwood ply. the 10w would cut 9mm poplar ply, which is great for some things, but dents too much for workshop use (just my opinion) for your 5.5w I would suggest that first you WILL need an air assist to cut anything, second use a cake cooling rack/honeycomb bed to lift the work off the ground and let the leader go all the way through, and 3rd buy a selection of small bits of poplar ply from 1mm to 6mm and see what you can cut in a reasonable time

Just ordered my first laser machine yesterday. I bought the Longer Ray5 20W and have been looking for a good enclosure. I love the idea of using the laser to make the enclosure. Sadly I do not have any CAD program and would only need it for this project. Is it possible for you to convert it to a more user friendly downloadable version? I will gladly pay. Thank you.

Looks very nice! I could see a 3d printed handle on the front, just to make it a bit easier to open. I'm admittedly a little concerned, though, about enclosing a laser in a box made of flammable material. I heard you mention a flame sensor, but what other safety mechanisms does this device have?
@roTechnic
@roTechnic Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the plan was to put a handle on the front, but I found it didn’t need it as it is easy to open by holding either side. with regards to safety, I would put this in the same class as a small CNC router, that is to say it has no features other than the flame sensor.

A link to translate files to LightBurn from Autodesk Fusion 360. If the object consists of several parts, then Fusion can be disabled from showing them and everything is like in a video to create files with the DXF extension. Special thanks to the author for the detailed material. I'll try again as soon as I get plywood. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mJdli9KAnb62dJc.html

Is there a way to "export" all pieces at once as *.svg files? I started to export them as *.stl files but I can't keep track of so many and think I'm missing a lot. I want to import them into Lightburn so I can cut all the pieces.

Hi, I thought I had found the perfect enclosure, you supplied the CAD files. Great I thought. One problem. I have no idea how to use the CAD files to produce the files to cut the components from. I have opened them in Fusion 360, but at 61 my feeble brain has no idea what to do. Any chance of a quick video or do you know of one on KZfaq to show me how please. Thanks, Mark

Sorry to have to ask, but am I stupid? I have now spent what feels like hours reworking the files from Github in Lightburn. Could it be that the part of the cover with the 2 finger joints is missing? Cutting the files simply twice won't work out. Does anyone else have the same issue or just me? I really like the approach of using a machine to improve the same machine. It has a bit of a pre-apocalyptic Skynet flair to it

If you're working from the CAD it should be fairly easy to see what you need to cut, the left and right sides are the same , so just export the 2 pieces for the left side and cut them twice. All other pieces need to be exported individually and cut. Hope this helps!
