A roundover bit in a small hand held router would likely be the ticket to ease the edges to avoid tearing the leather.

Your sound effects had me rolling! I actually snort-laughed when I heard the spaghetti slurping sound with the stitching. If the leatherworking business ever dries up, you have a "sound" future as a foley artist. 🤣

I made about 4 - 1” deep trays for the man of the house and finished it off with glued on edging. They turned out very nice. The lady’s asked for deeper ones for keys and such so I glued and screwed two of forms together to make a 2” deep tray….and I got a couple of requests for a 3” deep tray for a table centerpiece. So I bought 3 forms and now am in process of making 3 -4 to see how they sell. I’ve used dyes and natural finishing colors for all and I finish the edges in with edging in a contrasting color. If I had the sewing machine to sew the edging rather than hot glueing they would be a lot nicer. Maybe someday.

Corter Leather has a video on wet molding trays like this (sort of) He puts both pieces of leather in the same mold to form and dry. That way, your glue surfaces match exactly and you may not have the same visible seam on the bottom. The other trick is to use thicker leather on the outside so the thinner inside leather will not move it. You idea is terrific. The concept works so well. On another note, your drawing was successful because it conveyed the idea to us viewers. Ben's drawing was very detailed. Not everyone can draw that way. But communicating is the key to a successful drawing.

thanks so much! that's a great tip. For this particular tray, because they were 2 different shapes it wouldn't have worked.

I always thought all the mold surfaces should be varnished or shellac’d (or HodgePodged, in you case) so the leather releases easily. Interesting to see I might not need that step… Good job, nice concept!

Vinegar does a great job of removing the soot left after laser cutting plywood. I don't know why but it does!

Great job! You should fill the ridge between the two sections with a mixture of leather dust and glue. That would help the ridge keep its shape. You can buy 5 pound bags of leather dust from one of the major leather craft suppliers. I really enjoy your videos!

Yep, it is. Definitely wouldn't trust this to hold up very long. They do have a 'dishwasher safe/waterproof' version that'd prob work a bit better. But I'll eventually have to use some actual wood finish for sure.

I am making a leather guitar strap for a friend and need to find someone with a laser cutter to cut 3 letters/initials out. I can't get anyone near me to respond to my emails sent to theiraser cutting websites. Would you be able to cut the letters out for me if I sent you this leather I have? I can't afford to buy a laser cutter just yet but I'd be willing to pay you for your time?
