I binged watched your ride project videos for the past three weeks. Now I’m all caught up. I aware you have the best carnival ride content on KZfaq since Slothy Vlogs. I could never take on a real ride restoration project like you but I love watching you do it. Please keep up the great work, I really love this!!!

Pete, I'm making a change and you are part of it. My youtube suggestions were doom and gloom from the left and right. I'm done with that and I just want to learn about random things that I've maybe seen for a second, thought about ( ya know, like carnival ride setup and teardown) then dismissed and moved on with my day. My feed will hopefully be all makers, restorers, geeks and random historians. So thank you. Great video and channel.

I would build an aluminum sub frame and use starboard for the tubs. I also use alot of .050 mill finish aluminum for skinning tubs. You can leave it bare, wrap it, or paint it. It's pretty cheap for a 4x8 sheet.
@awagentx
@awagentx Жыл бұрын
another good thought is if you are using a subframe use expanded metal (small hole size) for the floor, it will make cleaning easier and keep water from collecting in the bottom....

We call those vampire sockets, due to the pins looking like vanpire teeth etc. they work ok. When you put the wires into the socket. Push the wire on with a screw driver first to get a good connection. Just putting the wire in and screwing down the socket cap won’t be sufficient enough for a good connection.
@rushmgl
@rushmgl Жыл бұрын
I second this, especially with a larger lighting installation like the ride. The socket is a neat concept but giving it that extra help (aka a screwdriver) will save you hours of troubleshooting. Wish I could come over and give you a hand with everything, I love following your projects!

Flippin’ heck! So much cool stuff in this one. The lights and the “laser” cutting are so satisfying! And I really liked how you put the 360 model of the fitting on the screen while you were working with it. Nice detail!

A benefit with having the edge of the wood burned is that it will be less likely to rot or termites if you don't sand it off and you could char the face of all the wood before painting or staining and it will last way longer the just painting or staining alone.

Purple lights aren't that bright, why you rarely see them. I owed three King rides years back, loved 'um. The tops of the platform rides and the wings of the airplane's had been cut off by the previous owner (midway of mirth)but a brush painting with Rustolium and putting bells on all the tubs maid all the difference.

I know you haven’t chosen how you want to finish the combo vehicles, but it might be cool to have the light colors correspond to each of the vehicles’ main color… there are four of each vehicle, I think? If I misremembered that, forgive me 😅

You look familiar to me. Even though you're in Gettysburg. Did you come to this Lowe's often? I was a lumber cashier there for 20 years. I had to stop working due to health issues. But I may have run you through my register near the Pro desk a few times over the years. Ironically I have quite a few videos on my channel inside that Lowe's store as well from having Jim Coppersmith play Santa and Carnival Days in the Spring selling the MDA shamrocks. It's a small world

so for lights on the combo ride, here is a dumb idea... Use clear caps on those fixtures, and put RGB pixel LED's inside, then on the base where the outlet boxes were you can put a small plastic box with a controller and run it off the slip rings (or if you want to avoid them a battery) that way you can either make the colors dance & change or set the colors to where you take the ride, for a school event use school colors, for a christmas event christmas colors etc. given you are going to do "more realistic" paint on the vehicles I think this would be nice... also if it were me the pattern on the decking would have a painted "road" for the vehicles... but with the plastics bars, are you going to paint them a solid color or did you find a bulk supply of that nail chrome?
@jdinnis
@jdinnis Жыл бұрын
I like the style of lights you have chosen, but I am not sure your decision to use just three colors is the right way to go. With the 3-channel chaser, and 3 colors of lights, you get an effect where all the red on on, then all the orange, then all the yellow. I think the chase sequence would look better with just one color, or 4 colors. Maybe not too noticeable if you run the chaser fast enough, but I really think it would look cooler with some blues or greens in there.
@awagentx
@awagentx Жыл бұрын
I think the other trick is to alternate channels, on each "bar" and make sure that when you install the bars the "A" and "B" orders are alternated... that way you always have at least 2 colors lit...
@PeteRondeau
@PeteRondeau Жыл бұрын
I get what you are saying but my plan is not to alternate the colors but rather have them clustered together so all the red together, then the orange, then yellow. In the same way flames would be painted.

I probably should have commented this on the earlier video about the lighting but what filament material were those adapters printed out of? Since they're for outdoor use (and I don't know how hot the lights themselves get) I just want to ask if they're printed out of something that will survive this use case like a PETG or a Nylon and not something that'd deform and melt like a PLA would
@PeteRondeau
@PeteRondeau Жыл бұрын
I believe those are PETG or ABS I really don't remember, but the stringiness makes me think they were PETG. I rarely print with PLA.

@PeteRondeau

In my case I just put the word out that I wanted to take on a restoration project. A friend told me that a contractor that was doing some work for him had several in his backyard. The cheapest one I've seen was about $800. The problem with finding them though is that when they get to this point they aren't usually thought of as restoration candidates and the owners don't even bother trying to sell them, they just scrap them.
